OAKLAND, California -- Peter Gronquist has a thing for blinged-out weaponry. The artist recasts hand grenades to look like Pac-Men, paints chainsaws gold and slaps designer logos and fabric onto Russian rifles, then sells the modified armaments as pricey sculptures. Gronquist (pictured above) made his first piece -- a shotgun coated with Louis Vuitton fabric -- as a joke nearly a decade ago. But artistic arms dealing has proven lucrative for him: At a recent opening in Los Angeles, buyers turned out in droves to snag his creations, which start at $2,500. "You could put a designer label on anything and people would buy it," said Gronquist, 29, who earned a master's degree in fine art at the San Francisco Art Institute.
