Anybody tried out Windows 7 yet?
Is it better or worse {if possible} then vista?

We upgrading all the DC's in work to 2K8 so I'll need to use vista or 7 to administrate then, and that the only reason I'm installing it {only in a VM at that}.

probably not

most OS's don't rollback to the previous version smoothly , if you have upgraded the file system or deleted uninstall info then as a general rule you can't go back

in general a clean install is prefered to an upgrade and not just for windows

nt4 back to nt3.51 maybe if no new apps installed , anthing else I would not trust

You can't even roll back most SPs reliably.

NT4 rollback to NT3.51 doesn't work.

System restore is a nice idea. I turn it off as it slows the system and rarely works. If boot last known good configuration doesn't work, system restore may not work.

Beta and RCs are meant to be always on "throw-away" test systems. Never ever as replacement or upgrade to a commercial version. You'd only do an inplace install of Beta/RC if you installed a dummy/test version of old OS to see how well the "in place" upgrade works, prior to a rollout.

I've never seen "in place" upgrades be a good idea as often the PC has so many issues needing sorted anyway unless used by a trained user.

Thats the usual Microsoft thing to allow new machines sold after a specific date to get the free upgrade - note the wording: "...during the program eligibility window". If I remember correctly they did the same with Vista when that was announced because they dont want people holding off buying a new PC while they wait for the latest OS.

Did anyone have any problems installing the x64 bit version. Mine would copy the files fine but when it was extracting the files it would crap out after about 30% and gave some error. I can't remember the message but it said something about "missing files and restart the setup with the files included". The 32bit install went fine though.

Could be a corrupt download. Happened to me with the Windows Server 2008 trial.

Yea I had this problem. Assumed the CD I'd burned it to was bad so just installed the 32-Bit version. I downloaded via Technet Plus if that helps.

I have a laptop that I would like to try Windows 7 on. It currently has XP Home, what should I do when the Beta ends in August?? Thats what is stopping me from installing it.

Seems your hard disk is lowering the overall score. Could be a driver issue related to the disk controller. Or maybe the disk is running in a lower ATA mode or even PIO.

I never ran vista on my current win7 machine but its the harddrive is dragging my score down to 2. If not for that the next lowest score is 4 so a HD upgrade should give me a good score boost if I decided to go for it.

Personally I think it's very unlikely that your hard disk is at fault. What type of disk is it? I'd be thinking it's more of a SATA controller driver issue.

I have it but haven't installed it yet. There's no XP -> 7 upgrade option as of yet. It's suppose to run like XP but look like Vista. I say Ubuntu all the way :P

You could be right - its a 160gb sata. Has there been reports of dodgy drivers?

Windows 7 seems to score on a slightly different scale to Vista. For thing, the range of scores goes higher. My laptop got a 5.3 for Graphics under Vista, but only a 5.0 under Windows7. Oddly enough, gaming graphics has actually iomproved between the two editions..

I haven't heard any definite reports of dodgy drivers but the index scores should be similar to Vista if not the same.

Looks like they built in a bit of leeway into the benchmarks.
My card below scores a 6.9 on it..you'd need a newer generation card I'd say or SLI/X-Fire to get to the 6.9.
At present my slowest part is the ram..only 5.9..
Even my CPU only gets to 7.2 or something so I wouldn't mind having a system that scores 7.9 on all areas

If you like eye-candy (and realise than in fact Vista and Windows 7 offer no extra features except DX10 or under the hood advantages, goes slower, less securely and less compatible why not try these tools for 32bit Windows XP?
