Giving the current state of the global recession,is there any country were you would be better off?. Switzerland?
How about Cuba( nice weather & cheap drinks also good healthcare system for all)are they affected by the global banking problems? ,given their ideology.

Everywhere is hurting. Emmigration is futile at this point unless you are a specialist - in which case, depending on what you do and where you go, you will probably end up finding something. One of the best things you can do at the moment is try and convert your skills for use in critical functions - like healthcare.

Though im pretty sure I havent quite grasped just how severely Ireland is suffering from all of this versus everywhere else - I know you guys always relied on heavy EU funding..

Not sure healthcare is safe either. One of my friends just got laid off from that sector.

It depends on the area but the NIH just increased funding in a few areas so healthcare is stable right now.

Ever notice how every "Global Recession/Depression" in history is always followed by a world war?
Remember Ireland’s involvement in the last world war?
Who do you think the major players will be in the next one?

There will always be jobs.
They might not be glamorous ones; or anything close to what you thought you would be doing.
But there will always be something.

Or are we all reading the papers and watching too much tv?
Did you know that studies have shown that people who don’t watch or read the news live happier, healthier and longer lives?
I guess that can be summarized under “ignorance is bliss” and although I am not an advocate of this mentality; maybe there is something there.

How about we start with something simple.. like
Stop *****ing about everything?
Work a bit harder?
Stop living beyond our means?
Support our locally owned businesses?
??
Who knows.. things might just get better.

Little over dramatic there... there's not going to be a world war.... maybe a civil war between the private and public sector!

That was my point.
I was trying to be over dramatic.
I don't actually believe that there is going to be a world war.
But if we are going to freak-out about everything we see in the media.

I jumped ship 18 months ago (today

) and moved to Munich. I had a feeling a sh!t storm was coming but didn't ignore it like everyone else.

I like Germany but taxes will kill you and its a bit of a culture shock when you compare it to Ireland. Every thing works like clock work here, it really annoyed me when I came at first but got used to it quickly.

The taxes are an eye opener, I would have an extra €1k in my pocket every month if I was on the same salary in Ireland! I'm not complaining, at least here in Germany I can see where the tax money goes, small price to pay for stabilty and efficiency. If only the Irish government were half as transparent and efficient.

Too many are making this into a private vs public argument. You got to look at it from the perspective of the public sector being a company and the boss (government) not having the funds to keep the business running. Just like any other company, cuts have to be made. The public sector should at least be thankful that there was not mass redundancies (yet), it hurts but they still have a job unlike many in other companies.
