But Hitchcock had originally wanted someone called Carol Haney for the role, she was on broadway at the time. Hitchcock sent his Producer to sign her for the role, but the day his assistant went, her understudy (Shirley) was on stage and got signed instead.

I think he was noted as a female by mistake.
