Lidl in a national issue letter to the Minister for Environment, highlighted Portumna and Loughrea as locations where competitors were abusing the court option in the planning processhttps://www.connachttribune.ie/news/court-action-bids-to-stop-opening-of-lidl-stores-5593565
I don't live in the city anymore and have a neck injury that prevents me from driving at the moment…
There had been chatter that a certain business owner in Loughrea has been weaponising objectors so I guess good for Lidl for taking them on and at least moving the allegations from chatter to the courts
Haven't been in Galway in many many months and it's interesting to see the few changes.
Starbucks in Gemelles is quite disappointing to see however in the current climate it is a much more reliable business in that location.
Good to see Edward Square have a bit of life back in it.
While I've little interest in nandos, it's nice to see that building isn't rotting away anymore.
The downstairs of the eyre square shopping center by the Eglington Street corner entrance is looking no different and very sad nowadays, with all those empty units. That Bia Boru place also finally shut up shop, not at all surprised at that. Something with a little vision could do well there.
Downstairs of the Eyre Square shopping center (where Costa currently is) would be ideal for an indoor food market - something inspired by the Seven Dials Market in London comes to mind. It would provide a great location for local vendors to set up some tasty food items.
Village bookshop in Maigh Cuilinn closing
Roots Cafe, Shop St appears to be cleared out and gone.
Sign in window of Odean house beside O Connells etre square for Bar Italia Ciarlantini, hopefully woodquay coffee opening another branch, I love their coffee
There was a sign on it a few weeks ago about rennovations.
Ah ok, can't imagine there's be a lot to renovate in such a small space. Not in a hurry doing it anyway.
Yeah, must not be in a hurry because I saw a sign there a good few weeks ago, I think it was early May. I wonder if they put it up initially and then took the sign down and now aren't going to re-open. I use to frequent one of the other locations, it seems a lot less busy than a few years ago and their prices are way up. Tou
Premoli Shoeshop on William St has closed down.
The premises will be used for the Arts Festival Box Office.
After the backlash of Starbucks opening on Quay Street, Galwegians will be delighted to know Starbucks are opening another cafe in Galway SC on Headford Road!(merged units 60 and 61)
That's the old Born Unit..
GSC got planning to merge two units and convert to a cafe / restaurant ages ago (over a year), and has been looking for tenants. Seems no locals wanted the opportunity, so best of luck to Starbucks. I don't think they'll do well there (wrong crowd). But who knows. And better to see a unit occupied than not.
DK shoeshop on Headford Rd Shopping Centre is closing down, sale now on. Sorry to see them going, a loss to Galway retail.
honestly, no one would do well there….
that shopping center needs to be rebuilt, on the rare occasion i do go through the only footfall in the place is the short section at Boots, Tesco, Tormey's etc, the rest empty and place is muck. Here (which had plans) and Westside S/C need a complete knock and rebuild if they are going to survive.
Penneys, Gourmet Tart, Evergreen, hairdressers, barbers, Supermacs, Tiger would all disagree I'd say.
so your saying comparable footfall between the gap from supermacs to pennys….. right good thing there is a specspavers. those units are empty for a reason.
You're.
You said "the only footfall" is in the places you mentioned. Factually incorrect. No more needs to be said. Certainly not whataboutery in regards to something that wasn't said.
Gourmet Tart, Evergreen, Tiger are all in the area i mentioned with decent footfall. penny's is just beside boots so obviously the footfall is in that corner with boots along with tiger. but whatever
My opinion remains that the centre is a graveyard, propped up by a small number of multinational and corporate tenants who have multiple chain location. The local retailers that do well is where i see the footfall.
You beg to differ, and that's fine
Off topic folks, please bear in mind the thread title when posting
Grem
Given some of the discussion on the previous page which didn't get an "off topic" and the tumbleweed around these parts you'd do well to loosen up a bit.
Is the other cafe still open there?I can’t imagine they’ll welcome competition from Starbucks right beside them.
For a place with no footfall, there’s now 4 coffee shops in it, Starbucks, Gourmet Tart, Insomnia in Eason’s and I just can’t remember the name of the big open plan one at Tesco homewares. Not sure there’s that much market share there for all those, but good luck to them.
The one you're talking about would have a very distinct clientele that, I'd guess, wouldn't frequent Starbucks. More likely Starbucks will hit Insomnia and Supermacs coffee area.
Is there a date for Normal to open? All I hear is August
The Filling Station EcoShop on corner of Market St and Abbeygate St Upper will close on 4 July
Surprised they lasted so long. Love the concept but couldn't justify the premium prices.
Pamela Scott opened in the alleged "no footfall" area not so long ago.
Carrig Donn a bit before that.
Even IT Star seems to get a good few customers.
was there today and f all about. i'm entitled to my opinion as do you, the amount of vacant units tells the story as well.
