There must be a bad of merrymen touring Russia these days because it's getting hot, hot, hot.
Any firemen/firewomen here? How does one go about putting out fires like these? They look beyond the scale of anything modern human engineering could manage. Is it a case of shutting off valves and hoping to contain the fire and letting it burn everything off?
Red Adair would have been able to sort them fairly quick.
Basically you can't put it out. If there is a way you try to limit the amount of oil or gas that is in the tanks in the area, but good luck with that… Basically you let it burn out on it's own, even if it takes a few days.
The problem is, Ukraine then shows up a few days later and hits an entirely different part of the installation so you get to start over again :D
They can try blow the oxygen away from the flame with dynamite or something similar to stop it burning.
That’s what was done a lot during the gulf war.

The Russians have to send the oil somewhere if they don’t they have to shutdown producing oil wells for which they have no money, equipment or expertise to reopen

Very standard practice to extinguish some types of fires with explosives (Blowing out the candle).
“Oil well fires are more difficult to extinguish than regular fires due to the enormous fuel supply for the fire. In fighting a fire at a wellhead, typically high explosives, such as dynamite, are used to create a shockwave that pushes the burning fuel and local atmospheric oxygen away from a well.”
Ukraine should threaten to target Moscow on May 9th and when Russia move their air asset's for the parade just target more refineries in other parts of Russia.
Two chances - he's the only reason they're still afloat, literally in the case of Putin's mate's superyacht that sailed through the Straits of Hormuz.
The Red Square parade has already been mostly cancelled due to fear of Ukranian drones, no vehicles or ICBMs like previous years just some kids marching, utter humiliation for Russia yet again, wish the media would make a bigger deal of this, it could go a long way to bringing this nightmare to an end.

Well, he has form for murdering his own citizens because it's politically expedient, so I'm sure a few dead kids won't lose him much sleep.
Also of note: This is the first year that I’m not noticing a mad push by Putin to capture a town or objective before the Victory Day.
I remember this usually failing, with the Russians never managing to reach their objective in time, and losing an obscene amount of men in the attempt.
Part of me wonders if they have learned….but another part of me suspects that they simply can’t set that kind of goal for themselves anymore.
Yes, I'm aware. Because an oil well is a single source of fire and dynamite can shut the well or collapse it, so it cuts off oil that would otherwise keep burning.
But this is an oil refinery, you can't throw dynamite at it to make it stop burning.

I just got a permanent ban on Reddit for countering an argument that Ukraine should attack the parade by suggesting that this would lead to civilian casualties and that a burning Kremlin would present a much better background to the parade instead! Apparently this was a "threat of violence" 🙄
