From my posts it's clear what my stance on Michael Milne is; he can't scrummage. I think he's awful at it and hasn't improved on where he was a few years ago. You can even trace the progression of my thoughts on it from year to year in the posts linked.

You're unhappy with the language of the post and that's fine. What it doesn't do is take away from a consistent position.

What it also doesn't do is address starting another provincial shitfight for no reason. The poster was implying it was a newly held position because Milne had now joined Munster. It isn't and was shown not to be. It's incredibly tiring.

You're wasting your time with that poster. It was the same when McCarthy was selected in the AI squad ahead of him - Jumping to Milne's defence.

Funny they weren't calling for Milne's inclusion in the squad when he played for Leinster.

For the sake of accuracy here, the extent to which I "jumped to Milne's defence when McCarthy was selected in the AI squad ahead of him"was to post the following in the Munster thread:

Coombes and Milne both unlucky to miss out. I think Ireland were held up over the line 5 times during the 6 Nations? You'd think those 2 would be handy additions to the squad…

That was the entirety of my comment on both Milne and McCarthy after the squad announcement until you posted the following rubbish 2 days later.

Interestingly I don't remember many calls outside leinster for Milne to be included before now… although I'm sure it would be the same for Mccarthy if it was him that had moved south

Which clearly just reads as you wanting to have a swipe at Munster fans more than anything else….

I'm sure in the time you spent going back through those discussions you could see that that wasn't the full extent of your comments

Enlighten me to the full extent of my comments then?

Good job the disciplinary committee didn't review the game when checking Ryan's previous record

The first jump in movement half attempting to use his knee isn't remotely ok.

I also saw it and I think another one before that.

I'd say he had lost his temper at the way the ToB decision went. If he had watched Carleys body language at all after that incident he would have seen the the ref (wrongly imo) was more put out about VDFs intervention after than he was about the actual tackle. It was obvious Ireland were getting the next card against them.

But who would you drop? Which of the 3?

    Can’t drop Sheehan, no way

    Kelleher is a lion

Gus Mac has been ear marked for a while now, has a few caps under his belt and has been in a few camps, where he gotten up to speed

which hooker in Ireland could compare with the 3?

which hooker in Ireland could compare with the 3?

    You tell us

For those who haven't seen it, James Tracy on the 42.ie has a good analysis of the Scrum issues against SA. It negates the overly simplistic notion that it's always Porters fault, and focuses instead on the hooker-tighthead bind as the problem. Maybe the height difference is an issue after all.

I saw a South African clip (I can't find it again to link it here) analysing Ireland running through scrum practice in the warm ups, they were highlighting the hookers hips being higher than his props, feet in the incorrect position, etc. It looked fairly basic errors considering how we folded to the SA scrum in the game.

Eh? He is jumping over the South African player on the ground. There is nothing wrong with that at all.

Carley is a fairly abysmal ref. He's been in charge of so many games with highly controversial incidents

personally I don’t think it’s about which hooker is better than McCarty or if Milne is better than the Leinster non starters. The point is that the best players on the island should be playing/starting as many games in the league/cup as possible. That will obviously be detrimental to Leinster but this is the Irish thread and as an Irish fan I think any other way of looking at it is perverse.

Conor Murray is very critical today of him in the Irish Times calling him a snowball referee referring to the fact he makes his mind up early about a team and will then continue to whistle them off the pitch.

In an ideal world this should be the case, I agree. But you then have two options A. Force players to move. Or B. Select inferior players just because they play for a different province.

McCarthy v Stewart is one that’s been commonly brought up, with people saying Stewart should be there given he’s higher up his provinces depth chart. But McCarthy has actually played more rugby than Stewart since the start of last season. Stewart only managed to start 1 game last season. So if game time isn’t an issue for Stewart, it isn’t an issue for McCarthy.

I find the Michael Milne debate gas. Literally nobody was calling for his inclusion before April when he was 4th choice at Leinster (at best). But all of a sudden now he’s been shafted and would have saved our scrum v the Boks. Has driving down the M7 magically made him a better rugby player or something.

Is it ideal that our first three looseheads and hookers play for one province? Absolutely not. I’d much rather it wasn’t the case. But unless Stewart rediscovers his early career form and someone improves immensely at loosehead, that’s where we’re at. It’s not ideal by any means but the solution isn’t selecting worse players because they play for a different province.

Was anyone calling for him to play against the Boks though?

I'm not sure I've seen anyone make the claim that "he's been shafted and would have saved out scrum v the Boks"?

Another point is obviously Healy was in situ prior to April. His retirement naturally freed up a spot in the squad that Milne was competing for, so he was automatically one spot closer to inclusion just from that alone. That's part of the context of any calls for his inclusion.

Stewart was injured for most of last season. He is back this season and seems now to be ahead of Herring at Ulster. I've no issues with his non selection for the Autumn for the reasons you've given, but I think if he's starting between now and the 6Ns for Ulster and playing well then really he should be ahead of McCarthy for the 6Ns squad, unless McCarthy's situation changes at Leinster.

He's aggressively engaging in a ruck, nothing illegal at all.

We want our guys to match SA intensity then start micro analysing a non event.

Ryan isn't a dirty player as his record shows, got a deserved red but clear outs like his happen literally every week .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,378 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

I personally don't think who starts more or plays more should really be that important a factor. I'd expect Stewart to wrest back the third hooker spot because he's a better player, and has started this season very well. But it shouldn't be because he has more minutes under his belt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,085 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

Yeah I really like Stewart and think he's a really good prospect, and a decent run of fitness should give him the edge over McCarthy (who I also think is good).

I simply don't think anyone will be talking about Milne come the Six Nations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 603 ✭✭✭thamus doku

I’d drop one just to prove it’s Ireland, not Leinster in green.

Plenty of options around, it’s not like Sheahan and kelleher were on top form and Gus McCarthy was incognito.

And This idea that Leinster players are so much better then the rest, hard to make that argument when Ireland are losing so much against the big boys.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,686 ✭✭✭P.Walnuts

Translation : I'd just drop one for the sake of it

    Who would replace them?

Plenty of options around that I'm not going to mention because they are so plentiful

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,326 ✭✭✭TRC10

    Plenty of options around,

Once again (trying my best to not sound like a f*cking owl at this stage)…..who?

People keep saying there’s loads of quality options out there, but nearly always fail to actually name any.

I’d be confident that Stewart will be back in come the 6N if he continues his injury free run. But you can’t criticise a coach for not picking a guy who started one game all of last season because he was injured.

Brett Igoe says our true penalty count v SA was 27.

Our discipline is gone to pot.

Our discipline really was poor. 10 scrum penalties is a staggering amount. 3 offsides, 4 maul penalties and 5 breakdown penalties. Would love to see the numbers from SA perspective.

Interesting to see Carley didn’t penalise us once in the last 17mins. Our discipline suddenly improving hugely or Carley deciding that he needed to even out the penalty count to make it look like he was reffing both teams equally on paper. I know what I think. Conor Murray referring to him yesterday as a ‘snowball referee’ was as critical as the Irish media tend to get on refereeing performances.

It could well be that Carley took some sympathy towards us too. He definitely ignored a possible card against O'Brien at some stage
