As the Australian comedian Jim Jefferies said, there really isn't any argument for guns apart from "I like guns!'. That's it. It's not a great argument, but it's backed by the 2nd Amendment, so it doesn't have to be particularly good.

We'll have the usual nonsense (Megan Kelly was already on it last night) about the problem isn't really the guns but that the left wants to use examples like yesterday, and Sandy Hook, to get rid of guns. When clearly the problem is just that everyone needs more protection. They need to protect all the schools, all the churches.

The usual nonsense is that they should employ (or have them volunteer in some cases) veterans. Because that's what you want armed on the streets. A load of mentally damaged, trained killers, with little to live for and deep PTSD issues!

The gun 'debate' sums up the very heart of America. "I don't care about anybody else, I want X, and if that means others pay a price, then so be it, I don't care". It is the selfishness at the very core of the American mindset.

It is but the most telling thing is the lack of impact it has. You're either in favour of some form of gun control now or you think dead children is a price worth paying for whatever perverse reason you think you deserve to own a firearm.

It isn't just a state failure. To properly deal with mental health issues requires a massive investment in health care. And many of those suffering from mental health issues would be out of work and not have access to medical insurance. Who is going to pick up that tab? Certainly not the MAGA supporters.

They have only recently passed a bill cutting health coverage to millions, so the problems are likely to get worse, not better.

And again, it is due to the core selfishness at the heart of American culture. Blame mental health problems - and that is clearly a major component - but those pushing that are not doing so because they want to actively address it, but because they want to divert the debate away from actual guns.

But at no stage has any meaningful investigation been carried out into why the US is unique in facing this crisis.

The mental health thing is just a deflection. It's a serous issue for healthcare systems all over the world. The problem is easy access to firearms combined with a culture that heavily encourages main character syndrome.
