But you are ignoring the fact that Trump has ‘demanded/requested that he -Putin - be there. One of the main issues then is that if Putin does NOT turn up then how will Trump SPIN it and what actions , if any, will he take?

Was it not Putin who came up with the idea of thetalks

Putin did come up with the idea of the talks last week

Russian media and bots are furiously trying to row that back now that everyone else is asking why doesn’t Putin want to negotiate at the meeting he himself proposed

Why are these Russians such warmongers and don’t want peace

Must be hard to be a Russia adjacent “concerned peacenik” these days

And exactly what should Ukraine be prepared to concede to the imperialists trying to carry out a genocide against their people while stealing their land?

Why should they concede anything when, all indicators point to the total collapse of the Russian Federation well in advance of their being able to capture the rest of Ukraine if they continue to try persecute this pointless war? Yes, more soldiers will die in those years (and, of course innocent civilians since the Russian Federation doesn't observe the Geneva Convention or any civilised rules of war) but those lives sacrificed now will save many more than capitulating now and allowing Russia to re-build and re-arm for another try in ten years time.

The surest path to a prolonged peace in Europe is to expedite the collapse of the Russian Federation by any non-nuclear means possible. Will that collapse involve mayhen, starvation, civil war, and mass bloodshed in those territories? Probably. But, frankly, better they savage each other than us or our neighbours.

It will be an interesting to see that the going advice out of Orwell Road is going to be here should Putin ghost the talks in Turkey.

My money is on a period of relative silence before the usual suspects return to our digital shores and decry the European "Warmongers" and that they just want "the killing to end, NOW!"

Putin not attending Turkey will simply be filed away by them as a non-issue to never address, along with Bucha, the bombing of Childrens Hospitals and the uncanny fact that the Russians could end the war today if they just went home.

That, or they'll make some BS claim that Putin didn't turn up because "The European Warmoungers™ and their puppet Ukraine are not serious about peace…so we didn't go." On reflection…my money is on that response.

The minute Putin leaves for Turkey they should join the ICJ. He'd have to turn back immediately.

It looks like history is starting up again.

id be surprised if Putin went. At the end of the day he is a coward.

was thinking if Ukraine wants green light to purchase all that air defence equipment they tried to buy and Trump refused

They should just gift one of em remaining Antonov planes to Trump Family or Trump Presidential Library or something

Trump will then have the biggliest plane in world for AirForce One! He can even gild it in gold by helping seizing Russian gold assets 😬

He also couldn’t turn down the openly corrupt practice as he is currently busy tying himself in knots about the Qatari plane gift

I think there was only one A225, and the Russians destroyed it in 2022.

Yeh the AN-225 was destroyed by Russians in their disastrous attack on Hostomel airport

was thinking of the smaller AN planes they been using for weapons deliveries, which are still ridiculously big, including one they about to receive form Canada

All CAESAR self-propelled artillery systems manufactured in 2025 will be delivered to Ukraine, – French President Emmanuel Macron

It is reported that this could be up to 144 units.

A sizable artillery contribution from France this year.

Not quite,,, after the easy walkover he got in Crimea, he attempted to do just the same thing with Ukraune, take it all in just one bite. But failed dismally, and that has brought us to where we are now.

I genuinely think that the FSB will try to assassinate Zelensky tomorrow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,189 ✭✭✭saabsaab

From what I've read its a powerful weapon that can fire a wide array of exposives on an enemy and avoid destruction.

capitulating now and allowing Russia to re-build and re-arm for another try in ten years time.

Point you're missing here is if the 'peace deal' involves a waterproof security guarantee for Ukraine, something amounting to NATO membership in all but name, Zelensky may well decide that is worth 'capitulating' for as fighting on may not go as well for Ukraine as you envisage.

all indicators point to the total collapse of the Russian Federation well in advance of their being able to capture the rest of Ukraine if they continue to try persecute this pointless war?

Do we know Russia is realistically aspiring to seize all of Ukraine at this point? I mean I'm sure they'd like to but Putin is a hard-nosed realist. If total collapse is genuinely looming for Russia I'd be pretty sure he'll be cashing in his Ukranian chips…

Yes it's a state of the art artillery system. Very accurate with good range and mobility.

    How?

Putin's fate is tied to this war. He can't call a halt without signing his own deat warrant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,412 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

Leaders don't normally attend negotiations themselves on anything unless something is about to be signed off on i.e it's ready. Two leaders meeting is usually just a photo op formality.

The negotiations happen in advance by teams of envoys or diplomats.

This is normal protocol in all negotiations between states.

Yet again the meeting of leaders was Putin’s idea

Maybe one of his doubles didn’t get the memo and opened his mouth when he shouldn’t have?

It would be highly unusual, unwise and unheard of for two leaders to go into a room and start and finish a big negotiation together.

There is a good reason why things are never done like that. Most of the world's leaders are not trained negotiators. Negotiations at that level are complex and require skilled technical negotiators and a lot of time.

It would be patently ridiculous for such a scenario to occur here regardless of what the Russians said. Zelensky would be very foolish to get involved in that in my opinion. As would Putin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,213 ✭✭✭jmreire

The FSB has been trying to assassinate President Zelensky since he was elected, without success. I don't believe that they will succeed during these talks either. But maybe they will try by targeting the planes he will be travelling on.,,,,,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 839 ✭✭✭poop emoji

That’s precisely what happened in 2019 when Putin and Zelensky met last face to face

plenty of videos on YouTube too

You keep trying to distract from Putin proposing that there is another leader to leader meeting (presumably thinking Zelensky won’t meet) and then backing out because he does not want peace in the war he started

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,201 ✭✭✭✭Loafing Oaf

You mean if he settles for anything less than the whole country he's a dead man walking? I don't believe that: if he secured most of the four oblasts currently claiming I think he could spin that as a victory…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,189 ✭✭✭saabsaab

Macron gets it. The cheapest easiest and least painful way for Europe to defend itself against Russia is to give Ukraine all the weaponary possible, now. Not spend hundreds of Billions on defence in the furure when Russia has recovered and rebuilt and modernized its military.

for a chap that was a comedian he has balls of steel. I wouldn’t fancy knowing the Russians were looking to off you every turn

    a) talks have been going on for some time already with multiple countries and negotiators involved

    b) putin proposed the leader talks (likely to try and avoid looking like a little chicken after the ceasefire calls and now looks like an even bigger chicken)

    c) your excuses are exactly that being used by russian online "persons" to defend putin, which is pretty funny, who's feeding your ideas to you?
