Given that two American lads were in the running for Pope, expect a tantrum if neither gets the gig. Tariffs on the Vatican!

I'm sure we'll see Pope USA in the Oval Office soon, listening to Vance go on about abortion. This timeline is really weird.

Technically the new Pope will carry a Vatican passport, so ICE can detain and deport him for any criticism of Trump in his social media feeds.

Anyway I know nothing about this new pope, but if he's socially conservative against reproductive and gay rights then Donnie will count it as a MAGA win.

How can the deal be "full and comprehensive", and also have details yet to be revealed.

This stinks of his "concept" of a health plan....

So, have we got a MAGA pope?

Nope, by all accounts he might be the most liberal and pro Pope Francis choice they could have gone with.

Sounds quite the opposite, he would be a tad liberal.

In other words, I'm thinking of a number that's not zero.

The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

No doubt there will be some spin from Trump that the pope has something to do with him.

The new pope publicly contradicted JD Vance earlier in the year:

In February this year, he criticised comments made by Vice President JD Vance.

In an interview with Fox News, Vance said:  “There is a Christian concept that you love your family and then you love your neighbour, and then you love your community, and then you love your fellow citizens, and then after that, prioritize the rest of the world. A lot of the far left has completely inverted that.”

“JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn’t ask us to rank our love for others,” Prevost wrote on X.

The 'trade deal' sounds like an absolute joke. A few bullet points scribbled down on a piece of paper - it would take years to negotiate an actual trade deal.

The FT fairly comprehensively tore the UK-US trade deal to shreds, basically saying it doesn’t bode well in terms of the precedents it sets for other negotiations.

I reckon Starmer is canny enough to have sought advice from EU negotiators on how best to pull the wool over the eyes of everyone on Trump's team. An expat American Youtuber put up a video a couple of weeks ago outline the devil in the detail of the EU's "ban" on American beef. In short: there isn't one … because the EU got the deal they wanted several years ago, i.e. that the 'Muricans can sell us almost as much beef as they want, provided that (a) they can prove where the cattle came from (bog standard traceability, same as applies to every farmer in the EU) ; and (b) that it's certifiably hormone free.

And whaddyaknow, according to Ms. Ashton citing the USDA, only 14 beef farmers out of 732123 can be bothered to do the work to meet the requirements. Fourteen.

Considering that the UK has always been one of the leaders in European food safety (until the Brexit Tories said fekkit, who needs checks anyway) it'd be very strange if Starmer didn't offer Trumps an equally juicy "win" with a load of similar, effectively unmeetable, conditions buried in the detail.

The video, for anyone who's interested:

Ok, the right loons hate the new pope, that's a good sign.

There is something on the web that he is a registered republican? Can you register with both parties?

Maybe it's part of Trump's deal-bargaining with China over tariffs, crazy as usual.

So... MAGA are telling their followers to ignore science and are shutting down scientific research, ignore religious leaders who disagree with them, are disbanding the education system, are attacking judges and are flouting court rulings, and are floating the idea of an unconstitutional third term.

Is anyone in any doubt of the endgame here?

Cameron Hamilton, appointed as head of FEMA by Trump on Wednesday, was fired on Thursday [today] and escorted out of the FEMA building after he testified in congress against closing the agency. Now that's fast and brave of him to certify his position there. some-one on the committee must have Trump's hotline number.

REPORTER: But we're seeing as a result that ports here in the US, the traffic has really slowed and now thousands of dockworkers are truck drivers are worried about their jobs

TRUMP: That means we lose less money ... when you say it slowed down, that's a good thing, not a bad thing

It's easy to see how he went bankrupt six times. A 12 year old has a better grasp of basic economics.

One thing I've noticed recently is that Dublin Airport seems to have pulled their "proud believer in DEI". Any time I heard it it seemed a bit jarring and pointed as DEI is not really a phrase used in Irish corporate language.

Given the airports reliance on the US government for pre clearance, I did think that was rather "brave" of them in the Sir Humphrey sense of the word. I wonder if anything was said.

The new pope? I mean, he has lived in Peru for a long stint.

Unless it's deliberate, part of the asset stripping of a country after pushing it towards rock bottom.

Has Trump done anything, anything at all, against Russia that's worse than the 10% tariffs on every other country (apart from Naughty Korea and Iran) ?
