There are multiple countries throughout the EU with the same worries. Excluding the eastern Baltic states who have realised this, the rest need to get on board the idea that by far the cheapest easiest and most emphatically long term solution is to get involved in Ukraine - just air power would be enough, and when their economy collapses, no sympathetic loans, rescues, hands of friendship or similar nonsense, go in and finish them off as a state when they are down on their knees. Put the boot in this time.
Russian air defences missing again
Excellent post. I also loved my time in Russia - I was there in the time of Gorbachev / Yeltsin and while we handed over the occasional gift, just to speed things up a bit, there was never any threat or hostility. I visited again just once, in the Putin era, and there was a definite tension, even in dealing with the ordinary folk in shops and retaurants. I doubt I'll go back again. I would find it hard to leave the atrocities of Ukraine in the past.
That explains the mystery in a recent photo of an F16 being loaded into a Ukrainian cargo plane
100%. It should be dissolved as a state much in the same way Prussia was. Like the former German state, Russia has shown itself to be a malignant force menacing countries in Europe, Asia and Africa.
Ideally after it's defeat the nukes should be destroyed and the state broken up into multiple states to neuter the danger.
We should be worried too…Putin is at war with the west, and has been for a very long time, not in the sense of dropping bombs or firing bullets at us,but in every other way possible. And for sure,he does have concrete plans already made for when ever the circumstances allow.
Did you confine your visit to the cities, Moscow and St,Peterburg? or did you travel to some of the republics?
Between oil falling below 60$ (and dollar itself collapsing in value)
EU now putting complete ban on new contracts for all Russian oil, nuclear and gas (including small LNG) with likes of Hungary etc having to present plan how they get off existing contracts by 2027
Yes EU has been slow to move in complete ban (tho vast majority of Russian imports got cut early) but that works both ways, even if there is peace Russia lost Europe as a market now
We are in a situation where Trump will help end this war not by going against Putin but by being so economically incompetent causing market crash and recession coupled by likes of Saudi pumping more oil now to speed up the demise of Russian oil
Lived and worked in Moscow for a few years. Travelled to St. Petersburg a few times . Took a boat trip north as far as Valaam. And took another boat trip from Moscow as far as Nizhny Novgorod. Always wanted to go back and finish that one - it goes to Astrakhan and the coast of the Caspian. Did the usual Golden Ring trips and we had friends with a dachca about 60ml from the city, so we got to experience the rural life a few weekends every year. Facinating place but we barely scratched the surface really...
You really think that's going to happen after 3 years? Zero chance, although it should have been done long ago.
There's not going to be a defeat of Russia, how do you think that happens?
What other ways has Russian been at war with the west for a long time ?
Define not defeated?
The next time someone says the Media in Russia is the same as elsewhere… Ireland specifically 🥱

You need to ask that question to the poster I responded to
At a minimum the scenarios sketched out by Exiled Rebel and Cnocbui are not going to materialise. No NATO country is going to get directly involved in a shooting war with Russia, on Ukranian territory or anywhere else unless Putin starts it, and he's been very careful not to cross that line. This needs to be accepted if we're going to have a realistic conversation about options open to the West in this thread.
That was for spare parts. It didn't have an engine.
Speaking of realistic heard on radio Ukraine is now the largest manufacturer in world of artillery barrels and systems
With Czech artillery effort on track for 2 million shells this year and others eu etc with another 2 million
Also their homegrown drone production is outpacing Russia with malware being loaded so now Russians are afraid to plug-in captured drones as it wrecks their computers
I recently saw booby-trapped UA drones blowing up Russians that picked the up off the ground.
Lol. Get fcuked lads.
Hybrid warfare. Hacking and cyber-attacks, election meddling, troll factories/propaganda (information war), sabotage, poisoning and assassinations, lawfare, military posturing (e.g. violating airspace) and more recently that's escalated to interfering with undersea cables, the energy war, the use of nuclear threats, etc.
Woah surely if all that was confirmed to be true I assume these attacks were on NATO country’s they could invoke article 5?
No disrespect intended, (but this you know yourself anyway!) barely scratching the surface is a kind of understatement! I got a bit nearer to the Caspian Sea in my travels, which were predominantly in the Caucasus region, including Makhachkala on that side of the Caspian, and Ashgabat in Turkmenistan on the other side.In general, the ordinary people are the finest, once they get to know you. They are very understandably wary of strangers, especially foreigners, but even amongst their own,in the Republics Clans rule. And ethnic Russians are not welcome in any of the places that I've been to. But aside from all that you are right, would be fantastic to return at some point.
I'll put it another way, once Putin has gone to his eternal reward, you (and the world) will see a sharp decrease in the Nr of inexplicable incidents happening everywhere, world wide. The so-called anchor dragging, destroying undersea cables, the election interference, the hacking of Irish govt web sites etc. Countless attacks, to give them their proper names. But the common denominator is Vladimir Putin.
What election meddlin?
I just had a Quick Look for undersea cable sabotage is it this one ? https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2025/01/19/russia-baltic-undersea-cables-accidents-sabotage/
Or was it another one ?
NATO require's a cut and dried provable attack before Article 5 is triggered. Putin is a past master at committing deniable attacks, sure the attack took place, no doubt about it. Now prove Russia did it.
The last big one was Nord Stream and the dog on the street was saying it was Russia, and it was Ukraine.
I guess you could say that Marty, aren't we lucky that NATO is so restrained compared to the atrocities and damage being caused by russia.
I could believe it was either of them, the pipeline was carrying much less gas than they estimated indicating that russia knew it was gonna happen, whether by a back channel or carried out by themselves.
It'll come out at some point and everyone will shrug and be happy to have moved on from russian energy dependence.
