I know there’s not a lot of catholics left on boards -and he certainly blowed hot and cold around key issues - sometimes giving Hope- other times just being plain stubborn - but as a pope, he was by far so much more progressive than his predecessors - I wish him well into his next life when he passes - given the world we live in now, we need leaders to be “wise”- he had wisdom-leaving aside Catholicism, religion, the scandalous abuse-we still need good “leaders” - I’m not convinced the next pope will be as strong- there’s a rot in the Catholic Church that seems to just want to consume itself.

Even on The Irish Times website, their home page is totally dominated by it when in reality nothing is happening but what is telling is that when you look at their most read , only minor papal article about succession makes the most read Top 5 articles and yesterday none of the Pope's death stories made the list at all.

Interesting. It demonstrates that most people (well, most IT readers anyway) just aren't interested in the endless coverage.

Why don't you set up an RIP Only thread where only RIPs and positive comments about the pope and Catholicism are allowed? Automatic bans for negative comments. Call it the Cover Up thread or some such.

Im fairly sure the opposite happened and mod warnings or bans were given for behaviour in RIP threads before. But maybe rules are now relaxed. Would love to know what the stance actually is now. RIP threads are condolences threads or discussion threads on the person and their organisation.

To be fair. The thread title does not RIP, so suppose it's just a discussion thread.

What is there to discuss about his death? He's been gone 3 days now and in that time nothing has happened apart from him being moved and laid out.

It's only natural that people will discuss the church and its activities and if you view criticism of the church's nefarious history and record, particular in Ireland, as "Catholic bashing" then that's your problem and not the people on here discussing it.

He was head of an organisation full of rapists and human traffickers and people who falsely claim he challenged that should be called out. Same for speaking out both sides of his mouth on homosexuals.

Pretty much. Beyond the death in itself, there is plenty to discuss around the event. The circus around such a death (or the relative lack there-of in this case) is worth debate in itself.

We're also likely to see cross pollination from the Trump thread if Donnie does actually attend that funeral.

But the change of Pope in itself (caused by a death) brings into sharp focus the function and operation of the Catholic church. So it's only natural that debate about the entire organisation is so tied to the passing of their selected Leader for Life.

One can rightfully condemn and hate certain or all elements of the RCC but one can't do that without acknowledging that western culture as we know it (by any measure the best place and time to live in human history for most inhabitants of the west and beyond) wouldn't exist without the Church.

Next to nothing would have been preserved through the Dark Ages without the church, from building technology, political thought, etc.

Without the Reformation there would be no industrial revolution and everything that came from that.

The idea that 5th century Ireland would have been better off without the church is laughable. Go visit Afghanistan or similar if unsure because it's going to be a lot closer to 5th Ireland that what you know.

This is an organsation which is, today, right now, refusing to compensate victims of its abuse and doing all it can to frustrate those victims from seeking justice in the courts.

Cowardly from RTE, but that is them all over when it comes to the church.

Ya as we know it. You don't know that it wouldn't have been way better. Firstly the Dark Ages is pretty much a myth. Europe did not take huge steps backwards after the fall of Rome and it wasn't just the church preserving and advancing at the time.
