In County clare I estimate about 5% of the cars have non compliant number plates, and the vast majority of them are on BMWs and Audis.
Do the police ever take action on this issue?
There must be waterproof disc holders available…
We on boards get exercised by the strangest things. Posters used to complain about people having German style plates on non German cars.
There's a growing trend, especially online, of certain people getting a peculiar thrill from telling others what not to do. It's like the new religion and they are the perfect disciples
Crazy, isn't it? There's even some people out there who get a peculiar thrill from telling others what to wear - new religion blah blah perfect disciples blah blah…

Need I say more😀
Its a sign of how lawless the roads are here. In other jurisdictions having non standard plates would be like waving a red flag to the law.
It's simple really.
Non-conforming plates mean the owner is at least a twat, or maybe even a cųnt.
Or even a cwat or dare I say it, a tunt 😄
I would say the same of people who give more than a single thought over the font on someone's number plate.
And if that thought was "I still can't read that fupping number plate"?
here we do a Lowry
Should have gone to Specsavers.
Our laws aren't written in plain English. Actually they're not written in English at all really - the Irish text is the definitive one
This is why it takes so long to get even simple changes to legislation made
Thank you de Valera, a man who didn't understand the difference between dreams and reality 🙄
There are plenty which claim to be but none actually are. And even if there were, that doesn't address the theft issue
That post says more about you than it does the people who care about the font etc., on reg plates. FWIW, it's not really the font that's the problem, it's the point size, and increasingly the background colour. Some are polarised/photchromic, and they get darker depending on light conditions. It's all about invisibility for these drivers, not registration. That probably does not matter that much to you, but it does to a lot of people, and it's the law. Funny how they have a law around legibility of registration plates.
Sure look, if the gardai don't care, then I don't feel bad for not caring either.
I’d have to disagree. Some people just like the look of them. They aren’t necessarily trying to evade detection etc
Whats going with the plates with raised numbers, and a black EU background... It's got to be NCT failure.
Of course its a fail. Its a grey background, and they’re called 4D plates
They stick on a legal set of plates for the NCT, when swap back their 'cool' plates straight afterwards.
Seriously?
Ive seen an old lad, driving a new BMW.. even he's got the 4D plates.
It's real knobhead activity
It is only a single thought, as described in post #68!
In all my years on a bike, I've never had, nor heard of anyone having their tax disc stolen, or turning to mush either!
Buying "fancy" tax-disc holders that let in rain and encourage theft really is stupid.
Registration plates are not a fashion item for cars. It's bizarre that people think the well defined format as prescribed in the RTA, does not suit their vehicle, or perhaps driving style.
Just like tinted glass which is also a fashion/style issue. Just because some people don't understand the motive doesn't mean others dont think differently. It's a bit monotonous at this stage to be reading sweeping statements like anyone that has a number plate that doesn't strictly conform is a knobhead or criminal.
It's very simple, if it's illegal then enforce it or else worry about something more important like world peace or some such like
In most countries, number plates are issued by the government, and it's illegal to make your own.
So they are either official or illegal.
Here it's a grey area.
The laws around them are unenforceable.
Grey no plates are not as visible as standard as I said before alot of high value cars with them it just says owner cares more about image than the law
Its like saying everyone with tinted front glass is hiding guns and drugs on their passenger seat and using a phone behind the wheel. Whereas in reality its probably just because they think it looks cool. Still illegal of course, but probably no ill will behind it
AGS are barely enforcing speed limits ..however they still ask people to slow down for all that does without enforcement. For all the good it would do, maybe they should ask people to ensure they have plates that align with the legislation?
@User1998 The statement still holds that owners choose a plate format solely on the basis that that are more difficult to read etc. Having a non-confirming plate for any other reason is silly etc etc. Just like the fad/fashion a few years ago for some owners to have lights on the underside of the vehicle was silly. Like what's the point of having a car look cool from the outside while you are inside? It nothing else, it just makes your vehicle more likely to be stopped by AGS
The laws around them are unenforceable
Without the motivation or will, yes. Just like many other offences that occur daily on roads. Easily enforced if the desire is there and the legislation supports sanctionm. The issue of reg plates should be centralisesd and linked to payment of motor tax and insurance. Fail to pay either and your pate is withdrawn. Your vehicle cannot then be driven on public roads. That's how it works in Switzerland.
