Sitting in car park space with foot on brake pedal

I don't understand why people do this... Sit in their car in a parking space with the foot brake pedal pressed in and just sit there for 30 mins. Why don't they use the handbrake ? I see this all the time these days. It is something that sort of bothers me even though I know it shouldn't. What's the logic in this ? They just can't make up their mind if they are going to move or stay there ?

Have never seen someone sit there for 30 minutes with the break lights on, not even 10 minutes tbf. Maybe your just letting your frustration build up and time seems longer as you can't find a parking space and keep thinking they aew going to pull out?

How do you know it's the footbrake?

Ebrake engaged will keep the brake lights on too until the ignition is switched off.

Plenty of people wait in stationary traffic at busy junctions for several minutes without using their handbrake. Madness.

It's probably autohold. Drive into the space, leave the engine running, autohold/electronic handbrake engages, brake lights on. They remain on as long as the engine is running.

It's similar to following an EV on the road. I just couldn't understand why some seemed to brake at every corner on a rural road…. It's the regenerative braking kicking in when lifting off the accelerator, slowing the car down when charging the battery and turning on the rear brake lights.

I've personally never owned a car with an E brake setup. I mostly drive older luxury cars, I daily drive a 2008' Porsche Boxster with an old skool handbrake. I wasn't aware E brakes can keep the brake lights on without use of the pedal.

Have that option on my own car but almost never use it TBH. I find it'll kick in when manoeveuring at very slow speeds and cause annoyance/jerkiness.

I love sitting parked in busy shopping centre car parks with my reverse lights on, especially around Christmas. Causes quite the build up of traffic!

I would have expected that most Auto's don't do this, but I'm not sure how it would be implemented in a manual with and an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB)?

In my own car, when using the auto-hold function on my car (by pressing the brake pedal harder for a moment), it will keep the brake lights on when I'm stopped, in Drive. If I then move to Park, the EPB will automatically take over and turn the lights off.

If I'm in Drive and manually activate the EPB and remove my foot from the brake pedal, the lights will go off.

It seems that every frecking time I'm stuck in traffic the car in front has the brakes on, so annoying and another indicator of just how inconsiderate or plain ignorant the Irish driver has become.

A manual car with Stop/Start and Autohold will sit at lights/ parking space etc with the engine turned off as long as the gearbox is in neutral, then restart as soon as the clutch is depressed, or even, at least in Skoda’s, when the steering wheel is moved.
Brake lights will be on when car is in auto hold/ e-brake function.

Autohold works the exact same in a manual as it does an auto. The brake releases when you touch the accelerator, regardless if you’re in gear or neutral.

If its "autohold", how come the cars often start rolling slowly backwards? A number of times in recent months Ive had to give a blast of the horn to prevent them rolling back into me.

I get very annoyed with people who happily sit with their cars running when pulled in or when waiting in traffic with no obvious movement happening. My 2013 Volvo has stop/start thing, so I just pop into neutral and engine switches off until needed. Happy days.

I don't like stop/start.. disabilng it is part of the start up procedure.

Everytime the engine starts, it yanks the timing chain.. that's unnecessary stress/strain and stretching.

Have Stop/Start disabled on mine thanks to OBDEleven - annoying ridiculous feature that causes unnecessary wear and delays and it kills the power steering too which is great if it kicks in while you're waiting to turn into a junction.

My car has hill start assist so haven't used the handbrake for years and sitting with my foot on the brake pedal has simply become second nature to me.

Sorry for annoying you though, I'll take the bulbs out.

It does. Manufacturers are only interested if it fails IN warranty. Stop start is necessary or even mandatory to get the often fake mpg ratings on newer cars. I find it often stops, then starts up a few seconds later. I prefer to disable it permanently, then turn off engine if I know I will be waiting for a full cycle of traffic lights.
