My neighbour's dog bit me

I don't know where to post it. I just left a house and this Cocker Spaniel just bit me coming from behind. It was no sound of warning, no barking. I just got prescribed a course of antibiotics and will be given tetanus vaccine.

What should I do? This dog is always barking at people and is always not on lead. What, if it was a small kid attacked, not me. I feel I should do something about it. Without any consequences for my neighbours, it will stay as it is….

OP - do you have access to a legally held firearm? If so, shoot the dog. It's important that justice is done and revenge is most satisfying when you carry it out yourself.

Depends on the situation. If it's just a nip I wouldn't advocate putting the dog down but it should be reported. However if we talking about a serious bite then more robust action is needed.

If a dog , unprovoked bites a human they should be put down you lunatic. Your folks made the mature choice in the end, multiple bites is crazy.

People have very short memories regarding recent savage attacks by dogs on people. Yes, in most cases, they were prescribed breeds but any dog can inflict severe injury on a child or adult. This instance may just be a 'nip' but the dog has it in him to do it again and is obviously not supervised.

I am a dog lover however, if my old plodder of a choc lab ever bit someone, it would break my heart but I would have to say goodbye to him in the morning. OP should suggest the same course of action to the owner

If you still see the dog roaming free after a friendly chat with the neighbours to keep it enclosed then you have no choice but to get the dog put down. That is plain and simple and anyone who thinks different are crazy. As I've said I've seen it too many times on country roads people getting bit cycling or jogging. Usually the neighbour engages but after a few weeks of the dogs going mental they revert to their old ways of the dogs roaming free and you have no choice of trying to get it put down.

Will they like you for it No, will you prevent a child getting bit in future, Yes.

Unnecessary cruelty to an animal is abhorant.

However, comparing people to Witchfinder Generals and saying that they should be jailed for wanting an unprovoked dog that attacks to be euthanised is abnormal.

Animals are not equivalent to humans and priority should go towards safety of the latter. I guarantee the "trauma" you had in your earlier years is miniscule compared to the trauma of someone suffering life altering injuries or worse at the hands of an animal who attacks without provocation.

It has already been explained that those attacks don't happen with small dogs, only big dogs and of a certain breed. Has there been one case in the history of the world of an attack by a smaller dog on an infant? Yes, after all sorts of warning signed and precautions were ignored.

Every day you go in the car and you think nothing of all the people with life-altering injuries, yet suddenly we now have to all think about those extremely unlikely cases.

if you’re bitten by a dog, you should have the right to decide on the means of execution. If a child is bitten, then their parents should make the decision. I read about a parent intervening in a savage attack & beating the dog with a baseball bat. That’s proper justice.
