Winter 2024/25 - General Discussion

What are your thoughts about this winter?

I think if we are to get any cold weather it will be in early winter with the rest of the winter being mild and windy. I could tolerate a mild winter overall if we got a proper cold spell during the heart of winter. I' m thinking 7-9 days of snowy cold with two or three consecutive ice days! There is not much better than seeing frost and snow hang on the trees all day in December.

Horrible out even with the sun. Feels like it has been windy for ages now. Sometimes it doesn't let up for weeks and weeks in this country I hope this isn't one of those spells, I'd prefer grey and calm compared to this sh*t, it just makes being outside so unpleasant.

It was a gorgeous start to the day with localised patchy mist and golden glows (image from Malahide). The cumulus got going around midday as usual in these setups with a clear sea in the distance. Still.. a nice way to end what was a very forgettable winter in this part of Ireland. As has been mentioned a few times though, I appreciate it was not forgettable for many for the wrong reasons.

With 'March of many weather's ' about to start, I was just wondering how March 2013 evolved. Was there any SSW in the build up or was it just a case of a unique set up where we experienced such a cold March which lasted into mid April?

I always use St. Patrick's Day as the classic indicator. Some years is is absolutely lashing rain, other years its freezing cold then you can have glorious days like last year!

Yep, a strange winter in a lot of ways, a couple of fairly significant snowy spells and the strongest storm on record, yet here in Dublin at least a completely forgettable winter without a single day of any real note. The storm in December (who's name I've forgotten) probably the most eventful day here but overall lots of drab grey days, lots of cold wind and a good helping of sunshine in early Jan and again over the past week

Overall, good riddance and roll on some warmth, sunshine and hopefully some interesting convective weather!

This was a hard winter in the West. There were wild swings in temperatures. I remember 18c one dark November day followed a week later by the unprecedented snow event along the Atlantic coast in November. Then Storm Darragh caused a lot of destruction, and knocked trees in our garden. We lost water and power but thankfully it came back after 24 hours.
Next up more cold and ice, snow and dangerous road conditions in January.

This was followed by the catastrophic Storm Éoywn which many areas are still reeling from after the widespread destruction caused. Our roof was damaged and we were without power or water for a week. The lack of care or response to this crisis will live long in the memory. The media and certain people on the East trying to play down the severity of this storm due to their own IMBY experience was a surprise. It opened my eyes to the fact that even after parts of Galway lost full forests, flattened to the ground, walls knocked, communication networks destroyed, roads impassable for many days, roofs blown off houses, posters and some media decided this storm ‘wasn’t too bad’ as their own area wasn’t affected. I saw similar responses to the snow event in January in Munster. Not having water or electricity in the depths of winter in the dark should be a national emergency and declared as such. I’m glad this winter is coming to an end. But I just hope the summer will be good.

Great to be through January and February as they took forever. Finally seeing some brightness, it's only a pity the clocks don't go forward today which would have been great.
