I agree with you that Zelenskey should have played his cards better today - but his goose was cooked the minute he visited the US during the election campaign and backed Kamel Harris - that was a grave mistake, he should have stayed out of it. And it took only a few minutes of heated argument at today's press conference for the truth to come out. Trump does not forget and most certainly does not forgive his adversaries and Zelenskey learned that lesson today - when Trump is involved there's a high price to pay for backing the wrong horse.
Since the war started Zelenskey has travelled the world meeting world leaders and is so used to being feted, kissed, hugged, praised and admired and generally speaking having his pretty posterior licked so today must have been a shock to his system. He learned the hard way that there's a new world order in the White House that Biden is no more, his US $ bank account is closed and what he thought was a gift has turned into a loan and the wolves are at his door looking for their billions back in one form or other.
Perhaps in retrospect Zelenskey should have stepped aside once Trump was declared to be the next president. A new leader would have less baggage ………and may even have a suit in his wardrobe !

I'm happy as an Irish European to pay a 10 % extra "Russian War tax" to pay to support Ukraine.
I'm also happy if the Government suspends Irish Neutrality and ask for army volunteers to create an Irish Army grouping to go to Ukraine, maybe or maybe not in the front line.

Mining is a funny old game. Proven resources and claimed resources are very different. Why would a country sitting on such claimed trillions not just extract it for themselves if it was so sure it was worth the billions to invest in doing so ?

How would you suggest he could have handled it better? What specifically would you have done differently?
In my view whatever went wrong had already happened behind closed doors. What we watched just looked like a punitive harrying session. An execrable scripted show. Going in on how he dresses from the off. I’m not sure how anyone can advise on how he may have handled things better with Trump because we can only guess at what happened. Any number of things might have triggered Trump. And the advice seems framed as if Trump is a misbehaving child & every interaction has to involve better parenting skills from every statesman & foreign representative he interacts with. How did we get here?
I have been thinking what if the US cuts the intel feed? One response, though I acknowledge it would take courage, would be for countries that greatly assist the US with intelligence gathering, cease doing so - things like GCHQ and Pine Gap.

200 billion is a good thing if you have a population of 140 million not so good if you have a population of 5 million.

Europeans, especially the Germans, have no stomach for war - they learned their lesson the hard way. So there won't be an EU or European army in our lifetime. NATO is the only option and without the good old US of A I wouldn't like my freedom or security to be depending on it. Trump is currently blowing hot and cold on the whole thing, perhaps he's being tickled gently by Putin behind the scenes - who knows.
As for our excuse of an army they're a joke. Anyone with an iota of a brain has bailed out a long time ago - 75% of what's left would be otherwise unemployable. They make Dads Army look like the marines, perhaps a few may find a place in an EU army as boot polishers or tea boys waaaaaaaaaay back from the front line😁
