To ambush a dignitary in your office of state like that is the work of brigands. There are still family grudges in Ireland from similar acts from hundreds of years ago. trump and his ilk are marked for eternity after that sordid display.
what do you think? It’s only been discussed for the last week!
Calm down. This could easily be the case that this is resolved by then.
Zelensky and his entourage have left the White House just now.
Calm down. Europe lacks the resources or resolve for a multi-year war. People need to get this nonsense out of their heads.
Europe has multiples of population and military capability of Russia
And about an order of magnitude larger economy
Hell Ireland alone with 1/30th the population of Russia and no natural resources has an economy half the size of Russia
Who said war? Increasing military spending is the new reality unless you’ve your head in the sand.
Well, great. Trump is likely going to take this personally and direct all assistance to Ukraine cease. Fair play to Zelensky for fighting his principles, but unless Europe is in a position to completely take over (and it's not), he may have won a battle and lost a war. There probably was a better way to handle Trump than that.
There probably was a better way to handle Trump than that.
Yes, but probably not legal
Nah this was scripted to end like it did no matter what
Ah yeah, I was being a bit facetious. But at the same time, we completely undervalue what we bring to the table in terms of enabling the US to have such dominance on the world stage. They'd find things a lot harder without us, not unlike why Russia needed its bases in Syria etc. I don't think there'd be any harm in us growing a pair and letting the US know that they can either act like allies and show a bit of gratitude and diplomacy, or we'll start to reconsider the resources we give them. For a start, lets reduce the dependency on US weapons/ systems and start developing our own.
just done the same, great idea. Evil triumphs when good people stand by and do nothing.
Do you think Putin is going to be intimidated by that? If you were a dictator like Putin, in his position, would that stop you? Honestly?
The only way to handle Trump is to treat him like the 4 year old he is. Americans will regret the time that they chose to support a madman. Where are the decent Americans ?
We'll never know, but I'm not sure there was. They seemed to come into this with this as a deliberate outcome. They wanted to humiliate him. Maybe he should have taken it and grovelled at their feet but he's right not to trust them.
It also, obviously, flies in the face of everything Trump was saying yesterday.
What Trump really wants is a modern day Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, where they split the country in half and rob the place.
Spain's economy is nearly as big as Russia, and that's on figures from before Putin invaded Ukraine.
and what he really needs is a Molotov cocktail in close proximity to his orange head
Russias economy is a mess.
When you have to lean on North Korea for help, you know that things aren't going well.
nah **** that….tip toe around and grovel at the feet of that little **** is something no country let alone one fighting for their lives should be doing!! Fu(k trump and everyone who supports him!!
It's about being prepared for the worst, not 'intimidating Putin'.
So should we just remain unprepared?
This really is a pivotal moment for Europe.
If the US starts to withdraw aid, it will look like Zelenskyy was correct in his accusations of Trump.
If Europe doesn't step up, then they are siding with the Russian sympathizer over the President who's country was invaded.
We'll start to reconsider the resources we give them, are u for real?!
Half of Ireland would be living abroad only for their companies setting up here. We are a one trick pony utterly reliant on them
Yeah, no point flapping around and complaining about Trump. Step up for a neighbor or you can't claim any moral high ground.
I agree with you. I think Zelensky's performance has been nothing short of remarkable since the war started, but he messed up today. Like him or loathe him, Trump—much like every narcissistic CEO in the world—is easily swayed by flattery, and I think Zelensky got this badly wrong. Experienced leaders like Starmer, Bibi, the King of Jordan, and Shigeru Ishiba played the game and got exactly what they wanted from Trump. His performance might appeal to some internet tough guys, but in real-world terms, it’s a massive loss. I'm not sure where Zelensky goes from here.
How?
He was ambushed in the Oval office on live TV by Trump and Vance. It was an impossible situation designed to humiliate him on the international stage followed by a degrading business deal.
Honestly , How do you handle that? Trump and Vance were lined up like the principal and vice principal giving a bold student a dressing down. And they took full advantage of their superior power dynamic in the situation. That’s exactly what they wanted to do. It was a crude show of strength.
Absolutely not, we should be prepared. Being prepared is not going to help Ukraine though.
From Tusk
Yep give it a few months and one of his fired cabinet will reveal something along those lines.
