Horses was not their downfall.
Well........sure you know yourself..... Kinda ☠️
It's not thanks to Trump they are talking about peace. How is could be de-escalated has been discussed from day one. Just Putin wouldn't back down and neither would the Ukraine.
What Trump has done is switched sides, abandoned his allies and wants to rob Ukraine while throwing them under a bus.
He's giving Putin everything he wants at Ukraines expense and the expense of Europes security.
That's not peace thats capitulation and betrayal. It destabilises Europe. That's not peace either.
Next time the US looks for allies to legitimise it's ambitions it might be lonely.
You haven't a clue if you don't think this is deathly serious
That's the thing. If there's any kind of serious element to Trump's stance on China, they'll need European support which will not be forthcoming in the event of a US-backed Russian takeover of Ukraine. Trump has talked about China before but he needs them to make his tat so I doubt he's too serious about armed intervention over Taiwan.
heir country may end up 20% smaller in size, their hope of becoming a full member of NATO is dashed. Trump is after their natural riches in oil, gas and especially their rare but precious minerals
IMO Zelensky and his people would swallow all of that if they could get a proper security guarantee out of the deal.
I'll bet all those who agreed to buy US weapons like the F35 might be regretting it. Us could leave them high and dry.
The front is pretty well sub zero at the moment but I wonder what will the Russians do once temperatures rise and the going becomes bogged down and muddy and they've depleted a lot of their all terrain vehicles. They'll essentially become stuck in the mud.
I can see why Putin would welcome any kind of ceasefire now so he could rebuild his hardware for another push later.
Can't see what security is "proper". US has pulled any security rug from under. In two years time if Putin has another go, What's to stop him. After this peace treaty he'll be richer than before.
Every time Ukraine has given up nuclear weapons, land, Putin hasn't honoured it and just come back for more.
This time nothing stopping Putin from a land grab elsewhere. Why not.
This is the part that makes no logical sense. There's huge value in the Donbass for all those minerals. The US should be going all out to help Ukraine drive Russia out, so they can benefit from helping to exploit those resources.
IMO , Trump is of the opinion that he can access the ‘rear earths’ via UKr or via Russia. So whatever decision he makes on it will decide what side he is going support re the war/ conditions attached to a ceasefire
or.
America could still exploit all those resources, but at the invitation of Russia, their ally.
This whole mineral thing is overdone, who's going to refine the rare earth minerals?
At the moment the US actually digs up their own rare earths but then ships them to China where they are refined.
At the start of the war it was all about the starvation that would ensue because of disruptions to Ukrainian wheat exports.
be hard for American businesses to work with Russian ones if they're all under embargoes
Something tantamount to NATO membership ensuring that all the guarantors would pile in if Putin had another crack at Ukraine.
LOL….
You think they’ll still be around with King Trump at the helm?
Despite his fervent wishes, Trump isn't Emperor of the world. There's no incentive for Europe to make nice with Putin, not any of the other developed nations.
…plus why would Putin negotiate with a responsible Democrat who wasnt a Russian stoogè or grifter. Was always going to hold out for chance of Trump in the White House, someone Putin can play like a fiddle.
The words "a proper security guarantee" get bandied around a lot, but I don't see an awful lot of substance of what exactly constitutes that guarantee, or who backs it up.
At the moment, the only thing I see that comes close to any security guarantee for Ukraine is joining NATO. Anything else is just kicking the can down the road for Ukraine, and still leaves the potential for Russia or another like-minded state to feel that the rewards are worth the risks.
Trump has also pulled the rug from under NATO. It no longer the safety blanket it was.
Trump and Putin want to divide the spoils between them. Ukraine itself isn't a factor.
The former US secretary of state/diplomat and political scientist Henry Kissinger once said '' To be an enemy of the US is dangerous but to be a friend is fatal''
Trump bankrupts the US economy. Putin makes an offer for the reannexation of Alaska. Trump accepts before his time is up in office. Agent Krasnov makes Russia great again.
"Make Alaska Russian Again"?
Maybe some Trumpers might actually fall for it as MARA is kinda like MAGA.
Or constant drone attacks
This is why a new EU (plus UK and Norway) defence pact is required, that Ukraine can also join once this war is over.
Don’t necessarily have to throw NATO memberships in the bin, Trump will be gone some day, but he’s totally undermined it for now, so we need to make alternative plans (and I 100% include Ireland in that, we need to up our defence game big time!)
Okay but Trump could still ensure Putin was stopped in his tracks in Ukraine if he wanted.
That ship has sailed. Unless he has falling out with Putin.
I think it's possible Trump is happy for Putin to enjoy the spoils of what he has seized to date in Ukraine but "thus far shall he go but no further." Not sure Trump is enough of a sociopath to be indifferent to Putin annexing big chunks of Eastern Europe (or even further)…
A European Defence Pact or a "Coallition of the Willing v2.0" is the better option here. That way it can exclude corrupted EU members like Hungary while also allowing the UK, Canada, Japan, Australia etc.
