Not being a dick and not cosying up to dictators is free
Amazing how the actual life-long dictators in these autocratic hellholes always seem to score uptopia-like approval scores and votes on a scale unheard of in a western democracy, even in "landslide" victories.
Remarkable as well that the one candidate that had a decent backing against Putin in the 2024 election was deemed ineligible, all the signatures he gathered wittled down via "irregularities" to just under the threshold needed to run.
Just as remarkable, all exit polls from actual free and independent democracies in which Russian's could vote remotely, showed overwhelmingly support for candidates that were not Putin.
“Boris is just an unhappy person my age who apparently decided, in his old age, to make some money on anything whatsoever. I feel bad for Boris. The fool didn’t realize that he’s not being set up to run for president but for a criminal case on charges of betraying the Motherland,” said Vladimir Solovyov, calling Nadezhdin the candidate of the “Ukrainian Nazis.”
Let's not forget that little slice of paradise, Belarus, where Russia had to intervene to keep life-long dictator Lukashenko in power, who then managed to rally and achieve an astonishing 90% of the vote.
But of course, Zelensky is the true dictator, with his low, low approval rate of 55-65% depending where you look. Higher than Donald Trumps own approval rating, which ranges from 45-55 despite only being back in power a few weeks.
Since the US is going to withdraw it's troops from Europe, the Germans needs to say, well you won't be needing Ramstein airbase then, quit from there on your way out; The UK should say bye, we'll be having RAF Croughton back, thanks ("RAF Croughton is by far the most important military bases run by the United States of America in Europe.") and you can piss off out of RAF Menwith Hill, Mildenhall, Lakenheath and Fairford, while you're at it. Rinse and repeat across Europe.
I'd give it no more than 15 minutes before that little threat gets reversed.
Ukraine is currently in the position of having to fight on with whatever they have and can get. If they don't Russia will take what they want, kill and colonize most of Ukraine and be hungry for more. They have been offered nothing. No guarantees by US or Russia no reparations no territories returned no NATO or NATO boots in Ukraine no return of children stolen no control of their resources. Probably a worse 'deal' that Hitler offered Britain in 1940.
I think people are over thinking this.
Trump got elected on a platform of reducing government spending. The 10s of billions being spent on Ukraine is a very big item of expenditure..........on a country most Americans couldnt find on a map and probably never heard of until 3 years ago. Ukraine isnt on the radar of priorities for most Trump supporting working class Americans.
This is not the first time I heard this theory
I give you the most popular dictator of our time:
I think he's just upset that his trolling gets ignored, even though he pretends to be a statesman.
Why would Zelensky be invited to US-Russia negotiations about their bilateral relations? It makes no sense for Zelensky to sit in on talks about embassies and reopening dialogue on topics like arms control and the middle east.
If Zelensky wants to be involved in negotiations then he can repeal the Ukrainian law against negotiations, appoint a credible negotiator and send them to Russia. That is completely within his own remit to do. Putin has repeatedly said Russia is open to negotiating with Ukraine and has never rejected negotiations.
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/2/19/putin-rates-us-talks-highly-says-russia-ready-to-negotiate-over-ukraine
“We are not imposing anything on anyone. We are ready, I have already said this a hundred times – if they want, please, let these negotiations take place. And we will be ready to return to the table for negotiations,” he said.
Mod Edit: Warned for trolling
indeed ha ha. Looks like got paid extra for those long unreadable waffles.
Trumps childish obsession with, and maybe more so his definition of, "doing something" is something to behold.
His first action in "doing something" is telling the whole world Putin is a great man who wants peace, present him as reasonable, should basically be rewarded for his illegal invasion, spouting completely false Kremlin propaganda points like Zelensky started it, is a dictator hated by his own people, Ukraine has zero hope, all while treating Putin like his equal deserving respect and admiration and Russia like the second coming of the Roman Empire.
I don't know how Trump imagines this version of "doing something" translates, but the world starts to wonder if Putin has 4K footage of Moscow hookers taking dumps in his mouth.
Even his own party outside the cabaal of yes-men and women in cabinet are stunned. An incredible achievement in itself.
What is extremely disappointing is the slavish subservience of the Republican party to Trump, even in matters that harm USA's interests. Land of the free, my ***.
Trump said today Zelensky isn’t important enough to be involved in the negotiations.
What a piece of **** he really is. I hope his time is only around the corner.
As we all predicted
I don't believe that a peace deal is on the table at all. I think Trump had realised that the war cannot be easily stopped and now he is just trolling Zelenskyy to force him to reject Trump's ridiculous demands, so that Trump can say that Ukraine doesn't want peace and he can walk away from his stupid promise of finishing the war in 24 hours. See, the deal Trump offered is basically a reparations plan for a defeated country, without any commitment on the part of the USA. It is not a peace plan at all, it is basically a threat — give us 50% of your minerals for free for all eternity or else.
Seems like the nervous breakdown of European politicians continues as German foreign minister Baerbock threatens to pressure the US. If you take away those two Kremlin spies in Hungary and Slovakia it is probably the worst bunch of European politicians in history.
Sounds like Macron and Starmer will be getting an earful this week also due to the lack of diplomacy when it has been badly needed
Speaking on a Fox News podcast, Trump was asked about his upcoming meetings with Starmer and Macron and interrupted the host saying, "They didn't do anything...no meetings with Russia!"
"They haven't done anything," Trumps adds.
"Macron's a friend of mine", he continued, adding that Starmer was "a very nice guy" but that neither of them have done anything on Russia.
The sooner someone with good aim is successful, the better for all of us.
"I asked from Poland something no other German statesman could have dared. I asked for the return of the old German provinces, then only with a plebiscite. If Churchill and the warmongers felt half the responsibility toward Europe that I did they never would have started the war.
"On Sept. 2, 1939, war still could have been avoided. The British and the French wanted war, however-they wanted a three-year war in order reap profits from their war investments."
After alleging that the Germans had obtained possession of documents proving the "machinations of the warmongers" aimed at the spread of war, to Finland, Scandinavia, the Balkans and the bombardment of Baku and Batum, Hitler said that "after 18 days the Polish campaign ended. Then I issued an appeal to responsible men.
"I warned all against war, particularly the French against the pursuance of a war which would be horrible. This only served to incite the Franco-British warmongers, who saw their war profits most endangered. They began, however, to call it danger to civilization and culture."
Hitler said that only the armistice in the Russo-Finnish war prevented Allied intervention in Finland.
"Nevertheless, they determined to occupy Narvik and if necessary defeat any Norwegian-Swedish resistance," he said.
"When we learned this we were determined to anticipate them."
Sounds familiar? Trump has alraedy stated that discussions on a new world order would include The US, Russia and China he didn't see anyone else being involved. A massive change in mindset and a challenge to the EU and others.
Although a lot of Americans couldn't even point out Ukraine on a map...
can Zelenskyy afford to gamble on that though? If he tells trump to stuff his peace deal, can he be sure he’s not opening the gates of hell, unleashing a continental- scale rape of nanking on his country?
Zelensky is genuinely popular because he's a good leader under very difficult circumstances. Naturally MAGA and it's sycophants are attacking him because he's everything they aren't.
He stands up to Putin, they are Putin apologists.
He stands up to Trump's BS, they all bend the knee to Trump.
He's spilling blood for a democracy, they are busy supporting a dictatorship
We're only a month in and we have these increasingly awkward damage control attempts from supporters, because deep down they know they are being exposed on a world stage
Waltz, the national security advisor said in a presser that the US wanted to invest in Ukraine to help "grow the pie". Like, they're not even trying to hide the planned carve up of the country. It's mad.
Warning: rude language
Hardly a new take. If he read boards 4 weeks ago he'd have heard that at least 3 times.
Assuming that Russia has the same resources as before. This is not a certainty at all. As I said before, 2025 is the year when Russian war machine runs out of almost everything. Of course, Trump's behaviour encourages Putin a lot, but the Russian army may not be able to attack in 6 months.
I honestly think Trump wants to take Ukraine and maybe more of Europe.
He wants the EU out of the picture in his new world order.
I take it your Kremlin paymasters have furnished you with new talking points, all aiming to besmirch and smear President Zelenskyy. It must drive them batsh i t crazy to have such a formidable opponent.
If its not a conspiracy theory its an on/off interpretation of events with no nuance. Either the US is fully committed to Ukraine defeating Russia OR the US is working with Russia to defeat Ukraine. Only those two options exist.
There is many alternatives - most of which are explainable by there being no US critical interests at risk in Ukraine, and no justification for the vast expenditure of resources it would require to defeat Russia. The US simply has higher priorities and can walk away from Ukraine. No support for Russia required. For all the crying and wailing about the US-Russia meeting earlier this week, all it amounted to was an an agreement to restore embassy functions, normalise communications on a number of topics and to meet again. Ukraine was barely even mentioned.
I can't see that they (the Republican members of Congress) will do anything significant. I think they are jellyfish to a man. If they weren't, they would have stood up to the appointments of people who are unfit, poorly qualified, and in some cases of dubious loyalty to the US (!) to key roles in the Trump cabinet. They would have opposed the power that Musk seems to have been granted by Trump.
The ones around Trump now in that cabinet (e.g. Marco Rubio) seem to me to be slimy sycophants. That is why he has appointed them I expect. Whatever Trump (or Musk) want, no matter how mad, they will rush headlong to try and do I think. They sound like beaten dogs - every second word that comes out of their mouths must be some strident praise for Trump, lest he turn his ire on them.
It's kind of (edit: - er, very!) pathetic.
"Trump seems to want to simply negotiate a surrender on Ukraine's behalf and treat/reward Putin like a powerful equal that deserves his respect. Why? Really, no-one seems to have the faintest clue."
Could this be a WHY? An alt view that doesnt seem too off in these strange days:
Philip is a Prof in University of St Andrews and not given to conspiracy theories, none that I have seen in the past anyway
