It's worse than that, sitting on their hands and "waiting out" the next 4 years is only going to put another MAGA candidate in the white house

Never, ever expect or trust the Democrats to rise to the moment. Their modus operandi is mediocrity and lack of ambition. They have some great individual politicians and activists, but I fully expect them to blow this latest opportunity to meaningfully build the party into something better.

    The two things to remember:

    1. The only taxpayers that will benefit meaningfully from the Trump administration are the rich and ultra-rich. This is the central tenet of the Republican ideology, and they're not even secretive about it. They want to make the rich richer, and punish those who are inconsiderate enough to not be rich.
    2. The whole flawed premise of Musk's cost-cutting crusade is that these agencies are 'wasting' money. That's not to say there isn't some degree of wasteage within bureaucracies - of course there is. But they also provide immense intangible value, and Americans will absolutely see the consequences of that once essential services are cut to the bone in the name of 'cost-cutting'.

The $5k figure is based on them giving back 20% of the utter fantasy figure of $2T in savings that the Doggy boys will apparently find.

Not only will they not find $2T in savings anywhere , whatever paltry amount they do "save" will be lost many times over increased costs throughout the economy as they destroy the place.

What are we looking at 300m taxpayers in the United States 5k each is 1.5 trillion?

Better to spend that money making lives easier and taxes lower in azgeminepewinc (the swing states) so MAGA can secure the white house again

To be honest, Americans don't care anymore. They're a beaten wife with Stockholm Syndrome when it comes to their politics. As long as they're alive and get the odd pat on the back instead of a fist to the face, they're happy and don't care what'll happen to their country.

Land of the bought and owned and home of the weak.

I think I saw a figure on somewhere around 120M tax payers (not sure if they have the concept of couples being jointly taxed as a single "unit").

But any way you slice it , it's complete and utter nonsense - They won't save any money and they won't be giving anyone $5k or anything like it.

I saw a clip yesterday about how as soon as Trump took office, there were bills proposed regarding some of Trump's election promises about no tax on tips or on overtime.

However, those bills didn't proceed, because the bills that Trump et al are pushing through are going to be so costly to the Treasury with regards tax cuts for businesses and the wealthy, that it far outweighs any savings elsewhere they're going to be able to make through cuts. And so the prioritisation, of course, is still on cutting taxes for the wealthy.

At best, they might send out a cheque of maybe $1-2k to most taxpayers simply to placate them and bolster support and gain a good soundbite for Trump, but the idea that they'll spread out whatever they save among the American people is laughable. Most of the savings will go to enabling more tax cuts for the rich. Always the plan.

They need those checks soon seeing how egg prices are at all time high now under Trump

Russian agents have already assassinated people, planted bombs in parcels on DHL planes, cut internet cables and blown up munition storage.

None of this resulted in article 5 being triggered. Russians will push it as far as they can. And there will be a point where one country will trigger it and others will feel that it's not bad enough to get involved in a war with Russia.

Yet 1 in 2 voted for this. Americans really are a different breed

300m citizens but only about 165m file tax returns. Obviously, corporations pay a lot of tax too.

As for DOGE, unsurprisingly their numbers are junk: https://www.npr.org/2025/02/19/nx-s1-5302705/doge-overstates-savings-federal-contracts#:~:text=The%20doge.gov%2Fsavings%20page,it%20now%20shows%20%248.5%20billion.

Makes for good clickbait and keeps Trump in the news though.

slightly less than 50% of the votes cast went to CFTrump. 77million votes for Trump, about 1/4 the population overall.

This is unfortunately true - in many ways the democrats are as dysfunctional as the republicans, both the result of an utterly broken and corrupted system.

The democrats could sweep the house, presidency and senate and would focus on business as usual politics, reversing Trumps XOs but never treating it as the democratic catastrophe it is or acknowledging their role in it. And in a few years they’ll be out again asking how this possibly could have happened.

I hope Trump finds a way to run in 2028.

At least the Dems can put forward Obama for a third term

I can imagine Trump making a big deal of him signing the cheques from the IRS going out to the taxpayers. He did the same when the cheques were going out to the public struggling during the covid pandemic lockdown.

The goalposts would move then. Supreme Court would rule a third term only applies in the case on non consecutive terms

If they slice through the federal agencies and cut their staffing levels right down there will be even fewer taxpayers.

When they claim theyre not Nazi's

Steve Bannon does a blatant Nazi salute on stage at CPAC.

Superb speech from JB Pritzker at his state address.

"We don't have kings in America, and I don't intend to bend the knee to one"

Proper statesman and one of the few right now with the courage to speak out.

He doesn't look entirely convinced about the salute though, as though he is just saying/doing what he thinks is expected of him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,613 ✭✭✭techdiver

This is one thing that confuses me with their approach. They will slash and burn and fire so many people that everyone will at least know a family impacted. The are glib about what they are doing but these are real people and real families losing their income, health care etc. There is not one ounce of empathy with what they are doing (not unexpected as in my opinion Musk, Trump et al are all psychopaths)

This will surely lose them votes. The people who like this are already locked in maga voters. It will not win then more votes, it will lose them votes.

"He doesn't look entirely convinced about the salute though"

    And that makes it OK?

Trump called neo-Nazis very fine people in 2017. I'm only surprised it took this long for MAGA to abandon the pretence of not being Nazis.

Problem is that many rightly suspect that the next votes wont be free and the bastards will deliberately subvert the process by taking control of key agencies that should be independent. Trump is already trying with executive orders though these will get blocked by a judge and legally challenged. Theres also speculation that Trumps win in November was because of Voter Supression tactics and other bullshìt to skew results in his favour though of course noone wants to call it out because after 4 years of that Orange bollocks shouting stolen election Dems dont want to engage in that unless explicit undeniable evidence Trump and co conspired to do this.

Honestly I dont think these bastards are gonna go quietly this time they might have to be dragged out of there forcefully as they're gonna do so much damage they'll refuse to go rather than face the consequences.

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

Words are great but action will be required too. His point about how quickly the institutions of democracy can be and were torn down needs to be repeated and repeated - Americans are good at getting scared and paranoid - but they seem to be in a state of complete denial that natzism is about to take over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,053 ✭✭✭✭everlast75

Where the folks maintaining there were no russian connections?

Where are the folks who were outraged when people drew comparisons with MAGA and Nazis?

    Strangely quiet for some reason.

Not at all, just looks as though he feels a bit of an eejit doing a nazi salute - not for moral or principled reasons, just a bit eejity. Possibly not an Elon fan and doesn't want to be seen to be imitating him, but he has to toe the line. He is a moral and intelligence wasteland, no time for him.

The current "Budget" proposal from the GOP sees almost $8.5T in tax cuts funded by ~$4T in cuts to Services and an increase in the budget deficit of another $4.5T.

That Budget gives 83% of the tax cuts to the top 0.1% of Tax payers.

Taking the ~165M tax payers figure , that means that the 165k that make up the 0.1% will get an average tax cut of almost $43M each!!!!! (83% of 8.5T is a little over $7T) and the other 99.9% will share the remaining ~$1.5T between them , working out at a little under $9k each.

I think those numbers are spread over 8 years , so it's more like , the 0.1% are getting ~$5M/year tax cut and the rest will get about $1100/year..

    So yeah…..you know…….MAGA!!!!!
