Alternatives to Model Y

Hello all!

I have had a Tesla Model Y long range all wheel drive since 2023, and considering replacing this year. The car has been fantastic - but all the shite around Musk is genuinely putting me off the new Model Y/Juniper.

So - what is available on the Irish market with same or better range, similar price, that you would recommend? I am looking for similar to Model Y in terms of boot space - the dog inhabits the boot, a saloon/coupe would not work for my use case.

I see that Skoda has a new Enyaq launching in Q3 this year, but no pricing released yet.

No matter what brand you pick, its origins or CEO or ownership will have something in the closet, whether that be VAG group, Polestar, BYD, Nissan etc

But, if you're hellbent on changing, BYD SealU, ID4, Enyak, XPeng G6 to name a few.

There are very few saloons or coupes available anyway

Cupra Tavascan is just out and might suit what you want if you want that coupe SUV style, I have 2 labradors in the boot no problem

Enyaq coupe, ID5 the same car really. Both have a normal SUV version too

Kia EV6, BYD Seal U, Xpeng just came out G6 I think its called should all do a similar job.

It's a facelift Enyaq, not a new Enyaq just to be clear.

Closest direct replacement is probably the G6 as has been mentioned.

What will the price of the non-launch Model Y be in AWD? I assume somewhere around 50-55k?

Plenty of options around that, hell you can get cheaper. Enyaq would be pretty solid, especially the facelift. ID.4 GTX isn't as nice in the interior I feel but you could get a base ID.7 tourer perhaps?

I drove one for few days and because you said the dog lives in the boot one thing to mention is that it was the deepest boot I encounter in an EV.

I'm thinking ID.5 is kinda in the same class. Maybe Polestar 4 but I think it is smaller boot space in the later and the price is 40% over 50k. EX40 from Volvo again bit more expensive

I just saw that NEVO has 2 new shows next month so it is the best opportunity to go and see the options in flesh

Driving an Enyaq now - test drove a model Y but we've decided on the G6. It's so much nicer than either of them. More spacious, good tech and quality feel to the materials. Was going to hold off til the sealion was released before making the decision but the G6 ticks all the boxes

Very small useable battery for a car of that size. 64kWh seems like something from the past. And only one spec for Ireland. No HUD or ventilated seats.

For around the same price you've got a lot of competition, especially in battery size. VW ID7 (77kWh), Merc EQB (95kWh), BMW i4 35 (70kWh), Ford Capri (I know 😂) (84 kWh) and Polestar 4 LR (100kWh).

But as the weight of the battery is increases, car weight and then the tyres worn out quickly? I think the 71 kw battery size is the ideal one in terms of weight and tyres.

I heard Mercedes one no one is buying, I saw a Polestar 241 registration towed in a truck probably stuck in the middle of the road, VW ID7 has any door issues as that of ID4? its external appearance not appealing.

Too much emphasis on battery size here. Especially when cars with 60 kWh batteries are as efficient as cars with 77 kWh for example. Model 3 V ID4 etc

Also, the promotion of these 100kwh batteries just serve to prove how inefficient they are. The manufacturer needs such a large battery just to achieve a half decent WLPT figure.

We could pick holes in any car choice but this doesn't change the fact that the Lexus has a battery around the same size as a 2019 Hyundai Kona.

The list I made of cars around the same price with bigger batteries makes the Lexus look relatively very expensive. I chose the Merc because it's a premium vehicle. I could have picked Audi as well. There is just a lot of competition in that segment which makes that Lexus relatively poor value imo.

They've an identical one up for 3 grand more for a 2025 plate. There's zero options list on these so it will be identical

Not sure which is the better deal. 3 grand seems a small drop for a year even if it's really only a few months you can be sure they'd use it against you come trade in

Isn't the Rwd Model Y a 58kwh usable battery, never hear people complaining about that battery size. 64 kwh is fine for Ireland imo.
