BusConnects Dublin - Bus Network Changes Discussion

I understand that - my comment regarding capping was in relation to the timetable presentation, which was referenced in your post. I’d be inclined to agree though - adopt a normal 00:00-23:59 presentation.

As far as the scheduling is concerned, every phase of BusConnects so far they’ve got the running times badly wrong at the outset - either too little running time (as in the G Spine phase) resulting in numerous cancellations or curtailments, or in most cases far too much running time resulting in buses crawling along.

Dublin Bus do actually review and change the stop-by-stop timings regularly enough to reflect actual conditions, so the 19 may well get updated in due course. These reviews are not seen bizarrely as timetable changes and are not announced to the general public - you have to go looking at bustimes.org to see them.

Longer layovers can be a function of the disconnect between the service specifiers (NTA) and the schedulers in the bus companies. Clock face timetables also often lend themselves to longer layovers.

In the case of the 19 it could probably manage a 45 minute run time at night. However the 19 is interwoven with the E2 from a driver roster perspective which is an added complication in terms of managing the driver hours. While you could in theory squeeze an extra trip in, will that be deliverable in terms of the overall driver roster?

The scheduling across the bus companies leaves a lot to be desired - there is little or no integration between the Spine routes on the part of Dublin Bus, and going the other way, GAI have very tight schedules at times - look at the performance of the early S8 services on Sundays - they rarely make their times.

Mostly PAs with some SG/GTs and a handful of VGs operating peak hour short working from Bray to Parnell Square on the E1

Speaking of rare GAI bus allocations. A Streetlite was going up on the S8 to Kingswood Avenue earlier this evening. I saw the bus go past me while walking up to Dunnes at the Playwright. The bus was just about half full in capacity when I saw the bus standing at a pair of traffic lights in Newtownpark Avenue. Although the route display on the back of the bus wasn't working on it.

Yeah go-ahead have a batch of former Dublin bus AXs that they use on school/term time services .

With the schools on mid term break this week and the pressure on go-aheads fleet due to the mechanic shortage issue , makes sense that if their school bus fleet are working okay they can use them in place of those that need to be worked on.

Does anyone know when the judicial review will commence in relation to the Blanchardstown corridor?

Do you also happen to be in the know regarding when the O route may launch?

Already local politicians looking to extend the E services...

Why can't the 747/757 be brought back and/or modified?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,577 ✭✭✭VG31

Regular city bus services are not a suitable substitute for airport coach services. They have very limited luggage space.

Also the E1 already takes 2 hours. Extending it to the airport would add on another 10 minutes at least. Only the most budget conscious passengers would spend that long on a bus to the airport.

Local politicians on one side of the city who don’t understand that the primary purpose of the E1 and E2 on the northside of the city is to provide the connection for the communities along the Ballymun CBC and students at DCU to and from the city centre.

Agreed. Plus, and more relevant, it could create capacity issues for people along the Ballymun CBC who want to use the bus service.

That’s why the 19 does that job.

The corridors that those services operated on are now well served by Dublin Express and Aircoach. There's not really any need for another commercial operator via those areas.

Just saw a 19 on O’Connell street saying St. Pappins Road. Is this normal?

There are some departures from Merrion Square to St. Pappins Road in the evenings.

But isn't the 19 supposed to go to the airport? I also saw today that the 41 got extended to Swords Manor…

The 41 just stops at the airport on the way to Swords Manor, it's not the terminus. The 19 has peak departures from Merrion Square towards St. Pappins Road in the evening, most departures on the 19 go from Parnell Square to the airport but in April, the terminus is changing to Merrion Square. I would assume they will keep the short workings to keep with demand but any time I've been on the 19 towards Merrion Square (including today), it was fairly quiet.

It has hourly departures all day from Merrion Square to St. Pappin's Road.

Ah, I thought they were all peak only. Thanks for the correction.

I'm hoping to get 117's on the S4 tomorrow, as I didn't have the time to out and bus spot. The best bus spotting place is either the city or UCD.

For an enthusiast so concerned about bus allocation, you sure seem out of loop in regards to where the buses actually operate to in the first place…

I've got the 19 a few times now and have a few observations.

The numbers going to the airport aren't bad for a new route. As I expected, almost all are airport staff. There's definitely no risk of it being anywhere near full however.

The buses running from Parnell Square/Merrion Square to Wadelai are a complete waste. Aside from a few departures at school times, the 11 was never one of the busier routes on the northside. These extra departures are timetabled very close together and are just carrying air from what I can see. The ostensible reason for these extra departures was to alleviate perceived airport demand but unsurprisingly this really, really isn't an issue.

This is the timetable for a stop on St Pappin's Road this evening. There are multiple services to Wadelai (one from Parnell Square and one from Merrion Square) within a minute of each other!

I wouldn't normally complain about too many buses, particularly on a new route, but this is an exception. The 19 definitely does not need this excessive frequency. There are plenty of routes which could do with extra services. For example the 140, which has a much higher population density along the route and is packed most of the day. It seems the people who shout loudest get the best service even if the demand isn't there.

Pretty much. I hope that they make a more sensible timetable once the route is fully extended to Merrion Square in April.

I've taken the 19 from DCU to Merrion a few times, and usually it's almost completely empty - only a handful of people who either missed the regular 19 or who (like me) specifically want to go further than Parnell.

It's very nice to have a near-empty bus at 17:30, but it would be much better used as a peak hour departure on a busier route.

I think that you have to remember that this is very much a short term temporary timetable.

Once we get to April, the all day shorts to/from Wadelai will go, and then you will just have the standard service with a bus every 20 mins between the Airport and Merrion Square, but I would still expect the morning and evening 10 minute frequency to be kept with the six extra departures from Wadelai in the morning and the return in the evening (that currently go to Parnell Square) all operating to Merrion Square. All the others should go.

Sometimes to prove a point, you have to run services in a less than ideal way for a period and then you can point out that these extra buses are not needed.

I will say that I've seen large crowds of students specifically getting the 19 between DCU and Drumcondra (letting a 9/E1/E2 go). That connection is definitely needed.
