It's actually mental, I've a few South African in laws who have been trying to move to Europe on critical skills visas and this announcement has come out of nowhere.

Trying not to get their hopes up as it's mental stuff, but they're looking into it for sure. One of them in particular had their family farm CPO'd by the government so it might be particularly applicable to them.

Would absolutely love to get out of the place. (Although at this rate the US might not be much better in a few months!!)

I see DEI is the new boogyman, like woke before it, those against it can't actually define it or give a logical reason why they are against it.

Kansas fans would be mostly Trump supporters. Philly, not so much. Be interesting to see what reception he gets. No doubt he'll try to grab the limelight and present the trophy himself.

I don't quite follow, what point are you trying to make?

A lot of us that work for US multinationals get trained on the definition and objectives of this. One obvious reason to be against it is because it prioritises a variety of traits over ability.

the great state of Kansas 😋

The half time show might get a dig trump.

There aren't constant interruptions to the game to have advertisements, there are interruptions to the game where the game has to stop in order to switch out all the players, where a team uses a timeout (which they have a limited number of) for whatever reason etc, and so there are natural breaks in the game so TV networks throw some ads in. The ads are always pretty short too.

The only time the game stops for an actual ad break is when there's 2 minutes left in the half, as it may be the last time the network can get an ad in.

There are a lot of natural breaks in the game (again, when one team takes over possession from the other which can often happen unexpectedly, both teams have to suddenly swap out everyone on the pitch). But then compared to some other US sports like baseball which is practically a full-day event, it moves along quick enough at times.

Anyway, f*ck Trump. Considering the game will be in New Orleans and Trump is on for pulling funding from things like FEMA, hopefully he gets a sh*t reception.

    Trump agrees with you:

He said: "The FAA website states they include hearing, vision, missing extremities, partial paralysis, complete paralysis, epilepsy, severe intellectual disability, psychiatric disability and dwarfism all qualified for the position of a controller of air planes pouring into our country, pouring into a little spot. A little dot on the map. A runway."

All complete bollox obviously. You don't hire a disabled person because he's disabled. You hire those the most suitable and qualified and don't see their age, gender, sexuality, disability as a negative. I really believe people think DEI means a phone call center has to hire a deaf person over a non deaf person or a blind bus driver etc...

He'll probably present the trophy to them regardless of the result seen as they're his voters

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,273 ✭✭✭Doc07

Would you be prepared to consider them that there perhaps is an issue with the interpretation or execution of the policy in those companies?
I work for a public body who are very proud of their DEI. In past 3 years I have hired 3 white males without any issue or pressure , as they were the best candidates.

If the best candidates had been the non Irish or female candidates they would have been hired and their ethnicity or gender would not have been used to discriminate.
I think a lot of criticism of DEI is based upon naive or deliberate misunderstanding /misrepresentation to suit the usual anti-woke/anti everything bolloxology

I have asked myself why Trump always uses a marker to sign documents when the cameras are there, as in: does he have a need to use a marker due to failing eyesight or is it a size issue, as his scrawled signature is bigger than that made with a pen or biro. Most people use a biro or pen to sign documents.

I'm actually chuckling at this as my wife has a Afrikaans colleague who has no problem telling everyone that they only came to Ireland as a stepping stone to the US. Big Musk fan, but ironically their partner who works for a US multinational here was told that transfers from the EU to the US via the company were now on hold since Trump got in.

So now they'd have an easier time declaring themselves refugees, but I'm not sure what angle they'd use living in Ireland. Perhaps they'll say they're been forced to rub shoulders with coloured people.

Average baseball game in 2024 (excluding extra innings) was 2hr 36 min. Average football game 3hr 12 min.

Yes, definitely widespread issues with HR trying to implement DEI policies. HR are generally not able to implement it or don't want to do the work to do it right. So, they just randomly hire a few diversities to show 'progress', job done. In my experience diversity was implemented much better before DEI policies were introduced.

I, a bogger from the midlands knew that. The American president on the other hand….

A lot of organizations DEI implementation involved quota targets. e.g.

    https://www.internationalaccountingbulletin.com/news/newskpmg-uk-sets-2018-diversity-targets-and-commits-to-25-of-partners-to-be-female-4404429/

    https://www.pwc.co.uk/who-we-are/annual-report/annual-report-2023/people/inclusion-and-diversity.html

So, if you had 3 roles available, and you hired white males as they were the "best candidates", you failed by the DEI metrics of these corporations.

Perhaps your interpretation of DEI is different from what's generally out there?

    https://www.revelo.com/blog/dei-hiring#:~:text=programs%20are%20successful.-,What%20Is%20DEI%20Hiring%3F,to%20thrive%20within%20the%20workplace.

    https://www.indeed.com/hire/c/info/what-is-dei

The sexual orientation percentages is an interesting one. Should job candidates have to state this? Or can recruiting use their own intuition?? A quick read online doesnt offer any clear answers.

MAGA believes that the FAA is on it's way to becoming 'See no evil, hear no evil'.

Very reasonable post and perhaps my own experience is not representative. However, I do think most negativity and even hysteria at times about DEI, including on this forum, is just more of the same old tired anti PC/anti-woke /the kids are using litter trays etc..bullshit

edit: this is a reply to donaghs post above

'DEI hire' became a clear dog whistle of bigotry.

"You're an ethnic minority or a woman or (gasp) both. This means you are, by definition, incapable of performing the role which you have been assigned, what with your tiny brain, and therefore are a DEI hire. We need a meritocracy around here, i.e. a bunch of white, protestant men from middle-class families, coincidentally. Maybe one or two women just to tart the place up and make the coffee."

Same thing as Critical Race Theory, which the most bellicose critics couldn't and wouldn't define, since it wouldn't suit their agenda. CRT is a fairly involved academic field. Teaching kids in American schools that racism is bad, and that the examples of it in their not too distant past shouldn't be repeated. That's not CRT - it's just common sense and common decency.

I think it's different as tens of thousands in Ireland work for US multinationals who have DEI policies. Culturally it just doesn't feel right for most Irish to sit through US style videos and training on this stuff, it's very off putting.

In my workplace we receive training on what to do if there is an active shooter in the building, it's just a bit galling having to sit through such US crap as if Ireland is the same as the US.

First time I ever heard of a Diversity Hire was on an episode of Archer.

The EU literally change the infrastructure in Ireland, we also have access to so much trade just from being a member state.

It seems you don’t know much about Irelands change from being in the EU at all, to call it profound would be an understatement.

You’ll see once Trump has a go at the EU how that goes. He already buckled to Canada and Mexico, he hasn’t a hope against the EU.

And if you think investments from the yanks will just pack up and go, I’d suggest trying to understand the sheer size of that operation alone, along with the fact that companies that are set up in Ireland are done so for various reasons.

Thanks for the name calling 🫣

Preferential hiring and advancement policies based on traits or attributes not related to a candidate's capabilities to carry out a role is as logical (and basic) a reason as could be given. Are you sure you've never heard that said or seen that written?

The mans ignorance is almost impressive. I was just looking at a video on YouTube earlier whee someone was pulling apart Trumps press conference (from the election trail) where he was asked about trade v security with China and then about childcare costs. Word salad doesn’t begin to do justice to his answers. It’s hard to believe he’s actually well informed about anything. Equally hard to believe that any American could have listened to that and thought “yeah, that’s my guy”

It looks like the sky isnt going to fall after all.

Many say he's doing more than they expected — and of those who say this, most like what they see. Very few think he's doing less.

His partisans and his voters, in particular, say he's got the right amount of focus on matters like ending diversity, equity and inclusion programs and deporting those who are in the country illegally.

His deportation policy finds majority approval overall — just as most voters said they wanted during the campaign — and that extends to sending troops to the border, too.

Early days yet but the people seem to be happy with how Trump has started.

70% say he is doing what he promised in election campaign.

Lowering prices is the one area that a solid majority of the country agree Mr. Trump's team should be focusing on more, 66%.

Certainly not the doomsday scenario being expressed here though.
