AA Insurance charging €50 administration fee to change car ownership!

So I changed cars yesterday and as is required informed the Insurance company/ broker (theAA) - And much to my annoyance they charged a whopping €50 for the pleasure (my insurance is due for renewal early March btw)

They also had the cheek to say you will be receiving your new document and cert by email and to print out, in colour, your insurance disc!!

I requested that they send it out to me!

My wife recently changed her car and the Insurance company/ broker did not charge any such fee!

Anyone else had to pay so much to make a change to their policy??

Changed car just before Christmas, didn't cost me anything with allianz.( There was some small print about having to pay any premium difference but there wasn't any)

I assume its to make it awkward for couples with one car and switch owners to keep their No claims alive.

Get this. I had killings with them recently. The renewal came with a fee of 200 euro. We took that to be the renewal fee for AA membership but no, that was their commission. They were charging 194 euro on a 400 euro policy.. I told yer man I wanted to lodge a complaint and a manager was to contact me. Then Silence.

Fairly common with brokers like AA, going direct you often get the facility to do it for free if the risk is near the same or a little extra.

Took two cars away from AA this year, there renewal quote was crazy, very easy to change on line, they don't seem to want to keep there loyal customers, all the big discounts are for new customers, walk away and get better quotes elseware

Yes so Allianz and AXA (Through AIB) didnt charge - I dont mind €15 - €25 perhaps but €50 for a telephone call is ludicrous

And the first time i rang got through all the Press #1 for this, Press #2 for that and got cut off!! I had to go through it again!

Why are people loyal to insurance companies? Every year you should check every broker and company that you can find for your renewal. Then go with the cheapest that has the options you want. If I get a better quote I never go back to the original, how does my risk suddenly change when I get a better price.

As for the OP. The T&C's that you agreed to when you took out the policy laid out the charges. Is it the AAs fault that you didn’t read the contract you signed. I just had to pay €30 to them for a temporary transfer, but they were €200 cheaper than my renewal so I'm still ahead even though I'd free temp transfers with my last policy.

I use an independent broker and never have to pay to change to a new car.

Seeing as changing cars is very much a regular part of car ownership about every 3 to 4 years maybe companies should factor it in rather than going for stand alone charges.

You are lucky.I was charged e60 by AXA 2 years ago for the same reason.I'd say e50 is the most common charge for alteratins.Some insurers allow one change during the year for free.I'd expect that will change for all insurers.

All insurers list their charges in their T&Cs after you trawl thru them.

we use aviva, dont charge to change vehicles, and dont charge to add an adult driver

we were taking out new insurance with the AA for a car and they wanted to charge me 50e for a letter confirming named driver experience from 6 years ago for an earlier AA policy!!

Needless to say, we did not take out the new policy!

In the T & C's -the AA. AXA charged me E69 to change cars with 3 months on the policy 3 yrs ago.e40 was admin fee.They then added the 69 to the following year's premium quote.Lovely company

I'm direct with AIG, changed car last week - no charges - need to look at the T&C when signing up - most brokers will be charging all sorts of fees.

Its work but, go to all the direct insurer websites to compare with any broker quotes you get.

very interesting thread. I wanted to suspend car insurance as car was off the road. AA refused to suspend the cover so I said cancel policy with 6weeks to renewal- the approximate return would have been €35 but to do this they charge a cancellation fee of €75. So by cancelling the cover it would cost me a net €40. The fees they charge are outlandish- beware of the AA.
