AFAIK that issue with rollover was far worse years ago and also the information is 'polluted' with data from the states where their SUVs are much larger than ours.
SUVs are almost certainly safer for the occupants than a small car, but they make life more dangerous for non-occupants.
I don't know about you but I'd rather the driver of the bus I'm in didn't get his licence out of a cereal packet.

Proper order!! I drive an MB E class 220, mostly by myself. Why? primarily because I like the car, and the safety level and comfort it affords. For sure, if I'm goig to be involved in an accident, better be in the MB than in a Toyota Prius or other small car. It meets the latest emission standards, its taxed, insured, valid NCT, and always well serviced. So Yes, I like it and will continue driving it.

Range Rovers, Land Cruisers etc. were designed as workhorses, capable of travelling across desert and rivers and up mountains. They are not a city car per se, actually they are not a car at all, they are small trucks. And using one solely for the shopping, golf or collecting the kids from school etc. was not their intended purpose in any case.
Theres a big difference between back then when the Parents or friends taught the learner drivers how to drive..they were the only driving schools available. Unlike now, there was only a fraction of the Nr of vehicles on the roads. Neither were the roads anything like as complicated as they are now. Its not the same.

Back then, HGV Drivers who had already trained and tested for their HGV licences, but didnt have a bus licence were automatically given the Bus licence as well at renewal time in an effort to cut test times. No one got a Bus licence who didn't have previous HGV experience. Not much difference between driving a large rigid truck or touring / CIE coach. ( Coach is much more comfortable……….)
This is true. And RRs are ridiculously expensive to buy and to run.
But what a excellent driving experience….incomparable.
RR, LR have a terrible reputation for breaking down.
A lot of buyers are going for the look.

I’m on my second RR, no reliability issues at all. Compare that to my Audi (front suspension collapsed after 2 years, Merc a myriad of electrical issues. Just for the record, a bad driver is a bad driver. I also drive a very large truck. Ram. Never had an accident, can squeeze into spaces. While out yesterday evening I saw a micra blocking two lanes on the busiest day of the year, all because the driver couldn’t reverse, my large truck would have been able to reverse with room for another truck.
do I love my RR … yes. Is it comfortable? Absolutely. Who don’t I drive a smaller car? I do! On long journeys I like comfort over having my legs cramped, my back killing me and most of all interior space.

You didn't need a lorry licence to get a bus licence without test.
My Father got the full sheet. Everything. Rigid with trailer, artic etc and he only had a car licence to start with.
They do actually have some serious QC issues. The od thing is that there is a market out there that tolerates reliability issues just for the prestige associated with driving a Range Rover. Of course, many owners have no issues at all and they are a superb vehicle overall. Just a bit intimidating when you get a 500 Euro invoice for a tyre….

neighbour has super cars, brakes 10k etc. so the tyres don’t really bother me on a RR. Honestly, the oil changes on the Ram cause more issues, as in more frequent.
Are you referring to the 6 month period in 1979 where only people on their 2nd provisional licence got given a licence without a test?
All of these people would be at least in their late 60s by now. It has got to be a miniscule amount of people at this stage.
I approached a mechanic recently who specialises in range rovers as I had an intention of buying a commercial range rover, he warned me against them. He drives a pajero, he said he'd drive a range rover if they were any good.
He trained in limerick in a rover dealership and said unless I had very deep pockets to stay well clear as they're nothing but trouble and need constant maintenance.
At the time he was replacing a steering column in a 2020 range rover costing upwards of 7k. You might have got lucky with the one you bought but a quick Google will show you the sort of trouble that comes with a prestigious badge like RR
If there were more attractive mid urban suitable cars available we'd see a shift from large SUV like the RR. I've heard RRs being referred to as Wicklow Wagons mostly used for the school run.
I don't begrudge anyone wanting one, but I do scratch my head when someone finally gets one and then complains about parking difficulties and poor efficiencies and maintenance costs. The same person I'm thinking of is now talking about changing to something more compact.
Yes, it is, of course, a personal choice. I can understand why an individual would choose to drive say, a smart car or a fiat 600. Equally that another goes for a Range Rover or a hi spec merc.
Bus licence should still automatically give you a rigid licence imo. Same size vehicle same weights etc. A bus is slightly harder as you have to take into account you're sitting in front of the wheels.
Look fair play if you like it and it doesn't break your bank.
However, it's getting fairly fuckin annoying the last few years living in the country and seeing eejits buying SUVs, jeeps etc way too big for the local roads. There was a time where two saloons, hatchbacks etc could pass if one pulled in now it's a case of large stretches of roads getting backed up as one has to reverse all the way back to a cross. Same morons then getting aggressive with the smaller vehicles and I've even noticed some have the cheek to try and prevent people from using the publicly funded road if they don't live on it.
Same fuckers happy for the public to fund all the roadworks, electric and water mains tho
like I said second RR no issues third is on order for March delivery. So far, no issues. Has done off roading, farm hauling, dogs, kids, long drives etc. OK depreciation is cruel, but it’s my only “large” expense so to speak, I don’t spend money on drink, drugs, watches, etc….
From what I've seen is a lot of people who buy bigger for comfort aren't necessarily able to reverse when needed on a 50/50 backroad, so that look they give that can seem arrogant is just a stubborn insistance that everyone else must reverse to avoid them scraping their overpriced barbie bus trying.
Esp women, they freeze like startled rabbits and expect you to do all the reversing to the (much further away) passing spot.
Because they can...
