Trump has vowed to make Daylight Savings Time permanent in the USA so the clock will no longer be changed.

This is something most people regardless of political affiliation will be glad of.

    Longer evenings in the Winter.

Trump has previously voiced support for ending the clock changes, tweeting in 2019: “Making Daylight Saving Time permanent is O.K. with me!”

The Sunshine Protection Act, a bipartisan bill sponsored by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, whom Trump has tapped to helm the State Department stalled in the house a few years ago despite being unanimously approved by the Senate.

Except he hasn't, he has vowed to end Daylight Savings Time because he is utterly incapable of maintaining any kind of logical or coherent policy. Or, equally plausibly, he has no idea which is daylight savings and which is standard time.

A broken clock is right twice a day etc. etc. Would glad to see the practice end myself.

    He phrased it poorly.

He has spoken about it in the past and wanted to keep the US on Daylight Savings permanently.

No reason to think he would want to do a u turn.

He didn't "phrase it poorly" he is simply an incoherent mess of a person who can't keep a single thought straight in his head to the end of a sentence, never mind over the course of several months.

The amount of absolute garbage that comes out of Trump's mouth/keyboard just to be followed by "what he really meant was…" is staggering.

You’ve also got the practical end of such a proposal to consider. Daylight Savings has existed in the US since before the advent of digital systems. While many systems now synchronise against a specified timezone via an online Time Server, there are plenty of systems out there that will need to be manually edited to not apply Daylight Savings.

It’s not an impossible task, but it does require a good deal of planning and a review of systems to ensure important functions are not disrupted by an unplanned hour-shift early on a Sunday morning. Would an Elon-tastic Federal agency be up to the task? That’s questionable.

Only people against the clocks going forward and back are those so unorganised and stupid that they're constantly claiming to be caught out by it. A non-issue for everyone else, i.e. the great majority.

Anyone with a bit of common sense measures the time in seconds since 00:00:00 UT 1st January 1970 anyway 😉

I'd be happy if the EU got rid of the practice. It has been mentioned a few times but never happens.

I don't think the EU dictates that countries have to follow DST. Plenty of European non EU countries use it.

I've heard arguments in favour, mainly brighter mornings during winter for schoolkids, but that was just with the clock going back to normal time. Scrapping DST won't make a difference during the winter time.

Trump claims it will save money, anyone any idea of how much? Personally I think he just missed the McDonalds breakfast menu one time cause the clocks changed and has an axe to grind!

There's no EU standardisation on the practice, I wish there was. We won't change it on our own, particularly if the UK don't do it. Individual businesses could change their working hours if they saw fit.

Trump does like his sausage McMuffins. DST shouldn't make a difference to him, he never seems to do any work.

It's nothing that bothers me really. Half the time my clock in my car is the correct time, the rest it's off by an hour! Any other politician questioning removing DST would be met with 'there's more pressing issues to address' etc…

I'm just curious about how much it costs the enact DST, Trump says it will save money, but I've a feeling he's thinking there's billions of clocks that manually need changing twice a year.

All EU countries make the change on the same date.

The proposal for USA is to stay on DST and scrap the hour changes. Ireland would likely stay on the summer hours as well, our biggest issue is the UK and Northern Ireland if they don't change as well (and given the dumbness of brexit, likely wouldn't change because the EU is changing).

The EU plan was to give countries the choice of summer or winter hours but it got postponed due to the pandemic and hasn't come back yet.

(The US winter hours are only for 4.5 months as well, EU is 5 months).

Biden gets sh1t, loses an election because of his "failure" to address inflation/immigration/Israel.

Trump gets a cookie for.... saying he will deal with daylight savings time?

    Unf*ckingbelievavble.

The biggest issue with daylight saving is clocks are not readjusted untiled of March. Clocks go back about 7 weeks before Winter Solstice but do not adjust forwards until 14 weeks later. If it was the end if February or first weekend in March it woukd be 9-10 weeks

Biden lost an election??? How can he have lost an election if he wasn't on the ballot?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,967 ✭✭✭Hande hoche!

The return of BDS. The real pros use atomic clocks.

I'll assume your question was in good faith, despite the point being painfully obvious.

Biden's numbers were in the tank, and Harris lost the election because of how Biden was judged, because she was his VP.

Trump, on the other hand, seems to get credit for tying his f**king shoelaces.

    It always comes back to:
    Harris: "I'll make housing affordable"
Trump: "They're eating the cats! They're eating the dogs!"
Voters: I think Trump is making salient points and he has the concept of a plan, he seems to be the best person to look after my interests and I would definitely trust him with nuclear weapons.

You give Americans far too much credit for intelligence.

    Not to mention:

    (Pre-election)

Trump: I'll bring down grocery prices, and my tariffs will mean people won't have to pay as much for goods!

Trump Fans: YEAH! F*ck Biden & Harris!

    (Post-election)

Trump: Well, I probably can't bring down grocery prices, it's very hard. And people might have to pay more for goods because of my tariffs.

    Trump Fans: …erm…. yeaaahhhh?… not your fault I guess…. errr…. F*ck Biden & Harris!

On the whole daylight savings thing…

Why not split the difference? Instead of going forward one hour, go forward half an hour, and then you're in between all year round. And then just, you know, leave it at that.

    Not the worst idea.

Though knowing the MAGA faithful, they'll want to call it "Trump saves America Time", and put it forward three hours, to "own the libs".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,683 ✭✭✭ilkhanid

Cue chinstroking commentator. "Harris wasn't in touch with the real practicalities that concern the ordinary American voters:inflation, the price of gas, housing, healthcare…."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 37,930 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Saw clips of some podcast or radio show or something with some caller talking about how it was Biden & Harris' fault he was paying so much in taxes.

Cue silence and sounds of fumbling when it was pointed out to him that the US is still operating under tax code implemented by Trump which is still in effect until January 2025.

Many MAGA faithful are no longer with us because they took horse dewormer as medication against COVID and refused to get the vaccine.
They died with the words "it's all a hoax" on their lips.
His followers won't care what it costs them, what they lose or what happens to them and their loved ones. "Their" guy is in office and that's all that matters.

I'm already looking forward to their excuses-not with any pleasure, mind-if or when Trump starts some war with Iran or Mexico or anywhere else, after they'd swore blind that the Orange Buffoon was a peacenik dedicated to ending America's forever wars. "But…..this is different, really".
