Reports that a 2nd of whatever the new Russian missile type that hit Dnipro last night has just hit again.
While it may not be an ICBM, what possibility of it being a MIRVed MRBM or IRBM?
Ukraine has lost over 80% of it's heating capacity and over 50% of it's power generating capacity as winter arrives. Some harsh realities here in this news piece about how bad things are at the front. Going to be a rough few months for the people over there let's all support them if we can by any means possible.
What does "limited conscription" look like?
Ukraine needs to have a realistic concensus of what a "victory" now looks like and how the leadership sells it as that.
I see Zelensky has said that Crimea can only be taken back through diplomacy which takes Crimea effectively off the table militarily.
The biggest fudge that needs to be created is how to square the circle of losing sovereignty over either all or a large portion of the four oblasts Russia seeks but somehow portraying it as temporary, that they'll be returned one day. The west could help here by simply refusing to ever recognise the annexed regions as part of Russia.
I think in the end there'll be a lot ambiguity after the negotiations, a lot of room for differing interpretations for either side to sell it.
Zelensky beginning to walk back the ICBM claims
Volodymyr Zelenskyy has claimed that Russia used a "new type" of missile in an attack on Ukraine today.
"Today, our crazy neighbour has once again shown what he really is and how he despises dignity, freedom, and human life in general," Zelenskyy said in a statement.
"He is so afraid that he is already using new missiles," he added.
The Ukrainian leader said the missile was of Russian origin, and that it "has all the characteristics - speed, altitude - of an intercontinental ballistic missile".
Expert investigation was under way to confirm the type of missile, he added.
Conflicting reports have emerged this morning after the Ukrainian air force said Russia had fired an ICBM at the city of Dnipro.
However a Western official suggested an ICBM was not used in the attack.
Why can Russia escalate on a whim but everyone else must be confined by Russias parameters. Even to the degree of directly involving a 3rd parties troops on the ground but threatens nuclear attack if anyone has the audacity to help Ukraine.
Let's see, i have my doubts.
If they want, as long as Western parties are not directly participating. Putin has said so himself, Ukraine launched 1000 km drones into Russia and nothing was said so if they want to go ahead.
For historical reference see 'battle of the bulge'.
would that ICBM attack the most recent escalation and should UKr respond in equal measure
It might not be currently viewed as an issue but a US president destabilizing NATO is likely gonna change that view.
You are probably correct to a degree. They can’t even procure and pay a normal amount for a bike shed.
At this stage, the EU should start putting some pressure on the government here to pull the finger out finally
They never look further down the road. Same as the idiots who voted Trump in the US. By doing so they exponentially increased the chances of seeing their own kids go to war. When they're standing at a graveside in 10yrs will they remember the day they voted for Trump and set the ball in motion. Same could be said for anyone voting SF, Wallace or Daly here, or Scholz in Germany.
Absolutely threeball, this 'both sides' sh1te is quite sick.
It's completely morally bankrupt. Those who spout it should ask themselves would they like to be given access to protection if they came under attack.
I hope that the media highlight this very fast and that SF either do a U turn or deal with the electoral hit as Wallace and Daly did.
SF and the rest of the "both sides" loonies in Europe will have alot to answer for in 6 or 7 years when sons round Europe are being drafted into and dying in a war that should have been stoped 2yrs ago. Irish neutrality won't save us either.
I have zero confidence that any money thrown at defence would be wisely spent. Look at our track record as a nation for evidence of same. Let's be honest here though, defence isn't even on the top 20 priorities for any of the talking heads looking to get elected. It's basically a non issue.
I'm well aware of the history of Russia's unprovoked violations of previous agreements with Ukraine. I have many posts on this thread. Ukraine is not guilty of being the aggressor. Russia started violations of Budapest when Ukraine was considering signing an agreement with the EU - something Ukraine is entirely within its rights to do. Russia has no right to demand Ukraine be a vassal state to it, which is an entirely aggressive stance towards Ukraine. Russia then was the aggressor, invading Crimea and sending its little green men and weapons into Donbas to foment a conflict.
Any objective assessment of the conflict would see that both Russia's invasion as a war crime and Russia's conduct of it as dominated by war crimes, including atrocities such as Bucha. Whatever transgressions Ukraine has carried out in defence of such aggression is miniscule in comparison. You ignore the scale and extent of Russian war crimes and focus on the standard both sides canard.
In your previous post you claimed to be concerned about lies being used to justify war.
You were presented with a brief summary of Russian lies. You didn't engage with them, didn't condemn them. As expected, you had nothing, just whataboutery. An absolute cop out.
Proof positive the concerns in your previous post were a charade and nothing more. You're not fooling anyone. It is obvious your posts will contain fake concern for Ukraine, will contain discredited Russian propaganda and are just exercises in anti Western bashing. Nothing more.
That depends, would it be to just sit around with inadequate defences or budgets to train on proper machinery? Would it be to have continuous work life issues and under pay?
They need to take defence seriously and honestly speaking, maybe it’s about time they do some sort of limited conscription to at least get the numbers in.
We give the defence forces a pittance but we lash money at the health service yearly and it’s always a **** show. How much has that children’s hospital gone over budget by?
It’s absolutely frustrating to just watch our government drag its feet on the issue.
It's no surprise, their foreign policy was always terrrible in the past + would have done severe damage to Ireland if it was ever implemented.
I am suspicious it hasn't seriously changed, though the party has moved to the centre in many ways.
They keep it on the down low and can get away with that because there is very little attention paid to such things by the Irish media or electorate.
For example, seems to be the Ukrainian embassy that spotted that dangerous stuff, which if ever followed through on, e.g. by wielding Ireland's power in the EU institutions, would put us on same side as the biggest pro-Putin puppets in Europe, like Orbán.
Sf have followed the Russian-light handbook for a long time and will not give it up any day soon.
Do you think Putin just woke up one morning and said ah lets invade our peaceful democratic neighbours for the craic? You know or are blissfully ignorant to the history of the conflict, which both sides are guilty of committing war crimes and being the aggressor.
But lets not start quoting western media or governments who peddle lies and disinformation to try and hoodwink their citizens into thinking we are the good guys because the majority of people are waking up to the fact the west is every bit as bad or even worse than the Russian war criminals.
What weapons are Russia getting from China ?
I read a lot of the SF manifesto yesterday, was disgusted by this. They're equating Ukrainian violence with the Russian violence it is responding to.
i had been genuinely thinking of SF but not now. You've got to be wary with any political group who is ambiguous on Russia. It's no secret Russia spends heavily on influencing politics in EU countries.
I would hope the national media pick up on this and do so very quickly.
You are right, the same hopium for nearly 3 years, however it is clear that Russia is very stretched and running low in key areas, just as Ukraine is, why else would it need weapons and manpower from North Korea, China, Iran? It's dependent on outside help just as much as Ukraine is
Whose "waging war" here again? Peaceful Russia - surely not! 😮 Who tells lies? Truthful Russia - surely not!😯
“Friends of Russia” continue to try to paint this Russian colonial conquest war as a war between Russia and NATO
Hence their “just asking questions” seem bizarre to normal people who just go “wtf?”
Surely they wouldn't be that stupid? Let's wait for confirmation from US intelligence or government official first.
NATO's red line for what? You've acknowledged that they aren't fighting in Ukraine or at war with Russia.
In the context of this thread, do you want to start with Russia's long history of lies in relation to Ukraine? It seems to be something you are concerned about. I can start you off with Russia lying that it wasn't going to invade, lying about being involved with shooting down civilian airliner, lying about indiscriminate attacks on civilian targets, lying about atrocities such as Bucha.
Or is all you have whataboutery and blinkers on when it comes to Russian lies and atrocities and you are just here to "peddle" (a word used in your post) anti Western propaganda?
I know, i am asking what is Nato's red line ?
