Ed smith is leaving today fm after 25 years, he just announced on twitter
Ed must be the third longest person currently with Today FM - on the broadcasting side of the house anyway, with the first being Ian Dempsey and the second being Mario Rosenstock
And that's it. No reason to listen to Today FM now.
Progress/ target market call it what you will Today FM is a shell of the station it used to be.
Hopefully Ed will find a spot elsewhere that allows him to play his choice of music.
He was always a good listen.
A very long drawn out nail in the coffin moving him to the 10pm slot. He was brilliant at 7pm and Songs of Praise was one of the best shows on radio. Hope he finds somewhere where's he's appreciated.

I only occasionally listened to his show after they "neutered" him as another poster here put it.
Eds Songs of Praise was the best show on radio. Got me through many the Sunday evening. Ed always came across as a really sound fella and hopefully he will get another opportunity to pitch his musical tastes to a national audience. Best of luck to him.
I wonder how will Today FM get in to do their 10pm slot now - maybe they should just play the Today FM Rocks station and save a few more quid.

I mean, I have to agree, "Today FM Rocks" wasn't a patch on Ed's Songs of Praise or Ed's Indie Disco, and you had to feel for the man as he played Coldplay and Imagine Dragons, but Ed himself was (is!) still a brilliant presenter, even if he wasn't allowed just go "Hey, have a listen to this 'Heroes' cover I found by someone who used to hang around with Bowie and Warhol" and played this.
So that's pretty much Claire Beck and Dec Pierce left now as the only "muso" DJs? And much as I love Dec, it's the same 90s songs on repeat every week. Just looking at the 'casualty list' of indie/rock/alternative/"not top 20" DJs they've lost in the last few years - Tom Dunne, Dave Couse, Paul McLoone, Donal Dineen, Kelly-Anne Byrne… and Alison Curtis is only allowed play playlist stuff. It's kinda depressing. I'll have a listen to see who replaces Ed, but I think I'll be listening to a lot more 8Radio and Nova in the evenings.

are you being serious? so by your estimate when he started in Today FM in 1998 / 99, he was 10 years old !!!
I only heard him on air from around 2013 onwards, what was he doing for the previous 15 or so years working in Today FM ?
No doubt leaving the station was not his own choice - sounds like he was a permanent employee if he was there so long.
I wonder will Ian be next to go ?

Separate note, he said a few weeks back that the role he has suits him as he has other work outside of radio that he's committed to. This was said during his recent stint covering for the man child.
I think there’s crossed wires here between Ed and Dara. Ed might be in his 40’s but Quilty is closer to mid 30’s.
Two articles about Ed Smith. The Irish Independent article includes his age - 47 for the record! As some alluded to, there were crossed wires. Dara Quilty's age had come up and some thought it was about Ed Smith!
The Hot Press article mentions when he started - 1999: not 1998 as one poster said. This is important in relation to who has been there the longest - Ian Dempsey. I think Ed came to Today FM in late 1999 which would make Mario Rosenstock the second longest, arriving earlier in 1999.

These and other articles mention his health scare in 2019 and that he currently lives in Mayo and travels down to Dublin to record shows. Maybe they were factors rather than simply being let go.

Thanks for confirming Dara Quilty isn't 48.
It's terrible when you tune in for the friday evening drive, hoping for some nice discussion on the weeks top stories and there is Roe McDermott with her American accent talking pure far left yank type gibberish.
Like someone who's spent their whole life in academia and twitter.
