I think it will be FF/FG again with god knows who. Hopefully a left wing party
It will be November 15th
FF/FG are virtually at one on most policies, there's little difference between them so it matters little as to who is Taoiseach.
The circumstances of the last election was such that to keep SF out, FF/FG had to coalesce and the seat tally they each had meant there was no dominant party so a rotating Taoiseach was the price to be paid. What will be interesting this time is the returns of both parties. There won't be a chasm between them but at the moment it's reasonable to think FG will return more seats and say if they have 10 more than FF will FG be willing to rotate the Taoiseach's position? The relative strength of SF after the election will be a factor here too.
Seems I was wrong. Perhaps Harris is waiting for more leaks from SF.
I was wrong about the date
Ah unless there is a 10 seat gap then the rotating is fine
The Taoiseach should be from the bigger party, end of discussion! This rotating Taoiseach thing is cringe. The smaller party in a coalition, if they want to form government, should accept that none of them can be Taoiseach.
You only have to look over the Irish Sea to the Tories who had 14 years of power up to this year? FG have at least been in coalition governments since 2011... Which is actually only 13 years not 15.
I don't particularly like the amount of independents we elect myself but I wouldn't change our system over it, that's on us the voters to not fall for their single issue nonsense.
So close!
Rename thread to Election Date to be called soon after Friday announces Taoiseach
ALl he was doing was creating abit of uncertainty to get a jump on the opposition.
Why tell them all the exact date and allow them all comfortably schedule their canvas, better have them guessing alittle at least even if everyone knew down to a couple of weeks when the date would be.
Harris is looking like a bit of an idiot now with regards to the general election date. Nobody believed his spoof about next year and he has been cornered into the truth now.
As are house prices, rents and homelessness.
With only 12 TDs greens must be the the most succesful party in irish history. They seem to be blamed for every decision that someone doesnt like that the Gov has taken over the last 5yrs. Greens will be wiped out as they always are when entering gov (EU wide) and will regroup and if the chance arises will go back in to govb# next time and get their policies implemented.
Other smaller parties should consider this also, SD refused to enter gov last time and now dont look like the will have as many seats as before.
IMO independents should not be allowed to run for the DAIL as the usually stand on a single issue in their area so should be in the council.
Its a sad reflection on the oppisition parties in this country that after 15 yrs in goverment that FG are still leading in the polls. i cannot think of another democracy where this would happen.
I agree with a lot of what you said but what is needed is better governance, not the ridiculous fools that are Aontu or some idiots of independent ireland etc. Having FF+FG on their own would be best in my opinion, send the greens back to the wasteland. The less said about SF the better.
You're very gullible.
Step back from Facebook/Twitter for a bit would be my advise.
It certainly is not. or either am i any kind of shill for FG(or the Greens)
Is that you Roderic? 😂
There is a lot of nonsense in that post. I'd stop listening to the news from Mary next door, Bill the butcher and the girls/lads down at bingo.
I think it's going to be a FFG government, propped up by "anyone but the Greens".
I've been a floating FF/FG voter my entire life but I genuinely feel they have totally failed to represent my views and those of many of my friends and families, especially in relation to some of the following issues;
There is an apparent absence of a coherent migration policy, with NGOs seemingly 'outwitting' the Government at every turn.
The Hate Bill legislation and the Gender issue is laughable, however I am horrified if half of what is alleged was intended to be taught to school-children is true. I mean, seriously, classroom discussions on rimming and fisting??? WTF!!!
Don't get me started on the HSE!!! Stephen Donnelly gave money to provide for children's scoliosis surgery and the hospital decided to spend it differently??? Who's really in charge of the HSE… if anyone???? The cost over-runs on the Children's hospital where it seems the HSE/Government are being shafted by BAM.
TUSLA don't seem to be very good at providing a safe service to vulnerable children in their care, do they? A 14 year old girl who went missing from TUSLA services was eventually found in a brothel!!!
Law and Order? The heart of our capital city is gone forever…People openly taking drugs in the streets, tent cities appearing overnight (allegedly at the behest on some individuals in NGOS), etc. Many of the suburbs of Dublin are rife with criminality, gang activity, .e.g. Balbriggan, Baldoyle, Jobstown, Clondalkin….
Serious violence in country towns between rival gangs (often of some of our 'marginalised citizens' with their own distinctive culture), e.g. attempted murder in broad daylight in Mullingar, open fights on the Main Street in Longford, etc.
I have no confidence in FFG being able to change anything. My votes will go towards AONTU/Independents. They won't have enough to form a government, but with enough votes they will be in a position to 'water-down' the larger parties and hopefully better represent a large number of people like me who are reluctant to speak out for fear of being branded 'Far-Right', racist, confused, etc.
I'll be honest, if I was younger, I'd pack my bags and leave…
FF/FG will certainly be re-elected but it won't be til the end of time….just until the next economic crash.
Mark Twain said "History doesn't repeat but it rhymes".
We have an overheating economy, record house-prices and our tax intake is extremely dependent on one area. Economic bodies preaching fiscal restraint are being ignored by parties of all persuasions as they engage in rampant auction politics.
I can't quite figure out if this reminds me more of the 2002 election or the 2007 election but it does feel like there is a reckoning on the horizon.
Stronger than expected maybe, but still not near where they were last time round. It'll be FG / FF till the end of time. Can't see a left alliance happening this time around anyway
I really dont know what to say about this...
Its not reported on as much as its absolutely toxic to government .The hotel which was turned into a Ukrainian centre has now been turned wholly into an IPA centre in my little village. In a village of 800 people there's now an IPA centre of about 1000.Lots of people don't even know about this transition.
I only know as I was friendly with a few Ukrainians. They have got jobs, moved out (with the €800 given to them tax free along with their salaries to compete in the housing market) went to other countries or went back to Ukraine.
This is happening all over the country and more IPAs will come here next year and more the year after.Because there's no more riots at the former Crown factory people this it's calmed down? The bill for this is approximately €1 billion a year but folks are shiteing on about the children's hospital and a bike shed.
It's genuinely scary the way a narrative can be manipulated in this country.
Till they look at their kids who will end up living with them till they are 40+.
O'Gorman confirming what we know, definite election! Wonder will Harris and Martin agree to that date if they want it to be seen as Greens setting date?
O'Gorman has lit the fuse. He wants 29-Nov. Interesting to see if Harris/Martin agree
Let's hope so.
you live in your own echo chamber. My experience with my friends and family is that everyone really likes him and thinks he is a great Taoiseach. I would however never use my own experience and bubble to make assumptions for the whole country. The facts however, that in the polls he is very popular.
How is increasing the volume of new homes constructed, year on year, a backward step?
Looks like Roderic O'Gorman has announced the date of the election.
Probably just wants it all to end as soon as possible so he can go work for some nice warm & fuzzy org
Rodders committing political harakiri, maybe???
Roderic sez: “I think the 29th is the date to go”
Roderick O'Gorman is now calling for the election to be held on the 29th so we can take it as being on, then.
But the actual writ won't happen today, or next week even.
