Following on from main thread in Current Affairs about Tubs in general (now closed and mod suggestion that Entertainment category is more suitable).
Indeed, entertainment in certain respects is what Tubs has provided, albeit perhaps in a way not intended. And still awaiting 150k payback to the licence fee holder.
And of course, his new career in Virgin Radio which is imminent.

The next set of RAJAR's will be particularly important for all presenters at VRUK as NewsUK maybe considering cutbacks. Weekend programming at Talk Radio could be reduced as all companies have been advised to cut back.
When are they due @nonetheless
All that’s really missing from his weekly musings the Mail on Sunday is him to sign off with “Needless to say, I had the laugh!”.
Life imitating art.
Not sure exactly. But I would say the outcome of the next set of RAJAR's will play an important role in their decision making.
Harris will parachute tubs into some government advisory role probably.
About as pointless mentioning Palestinians suffering to a US president.
Found this, presume it's the normal figures -

Yes, and to my knowledge cost cutting measures at NewsUK's companies are imminent. Wireless (Q102, LMFM etc) will also be affected.
poor auld tubs had it all sown up for a long time. The money from renalt and the big job in rte which he inherited from the family. then he messes it all up and has to stand in line in the morning in the london looking for "the start" and playing senior hurling at lunchtime with the men from the site ating the corn beef sanwitch. he started with nothing except the endorsement of A list celebs putting in a good word for him and a history of been spoon feed. Sure whats that.! and the Taoiseach going on the podcast…. sure thats only fair. FFS only fair in this green and pleasant land. I wish him well - he earned it. He worked and worked until we saw him as he was, the blubbering idiot on virgin . poor divel
Tubs is a clown, but how can you say that he inherited the big job in RTE from the family?
the pointing must have come from the other side of the family
Todd Andrews resigned from the RTE Authority in 1970, Tubridy wasn't born until 1973. Todd Andrews died in 1985, when Tubridy was twelve. It's hard to see how he could have had much influence on Tubridy's career. I would be much more inclined to attribute blame to the incompetence of RTE management.
I suppose there are two ways into TV/radio gigs. Either be an expert in a field and give well reasoned opinions that people value and want to hear. Or be a mild mannered, inoffensive generalist who has a surface level knowledge of many things, but who doesn't wade into deep waters they know they might drown in. Tubs certainly knows which camp he is in.
The "Ireland, isn't it great altogether" thing is really grating though. It's so basic and one note. For me, that's what really separates Tubs from the heavy hitters of Irish broadcasting of the last 50 years. Gay Byrne, in some ways was as parochial as they come. Yet he could as easily interview a Hollywood star or a some royal from a european monarchy, as he could talk to a working class man from Dublin. He never hammered the Irish card to death, he was more worldly than that. Wogan of course was very much an anglophile and internationalist, and sneered accordingly because of it. But his skill as a broadcaster can't be denied. The idea of moving to London to don an Aran sweater and tell the Brits about misty days in Cliften with Sally O' Brien and the way she might look at you, would have been laughable to Terry. His Irishness, that quick wit and gentle manner sold itself to his audience, he didn't have to ham it up, nor talk about it incessantly.
Very true.
I can’t imagine Ryan being comfortable in the presence of working class Dubliners in particular, likely his worst nightmare.
Maybe they'll let him back into rte if he does ushering in their future gpo studio, really get to know the locals.
lol.
i think I made my point
never took you for a snob Bobson I see Shanahans is in the news. Presume you have had the steak there Bob?
Oh come on now, the familial connection certainly didn’t hurt, this is RTE after all. Gerry Ryan managed to get work for his brother and daughter there based on their surname alone, and he was “just” a presenter, not a former chairman of the RTÉ Authority. I’m not saying the familial connection was 100% the reason Tubridy got promoted (beyond any obvious talent) as he did, I would also say it’s not 0%..
I most certainly wouldn’t rule out your incompetence thesis though, as we have many examples of same.
Perhaps we could agree it’s some combination of both?
I’ve dined there more than once, very much over-rated in my opinion.
98% management incompetence, 2% dead grandfather.
sure sure …lol
Let’s agree on the combination theory and disagree on the percentages then.
Do you both think that the long dead grandfather communicated via ouija board with the then DG to order him to give Tubridy the Late Late Show, and to pay him €750,000 p.a?
While Tubs was still in the nine o clock spot, he had an ex RTE lifer as a guest. The lifer was on with his wife. Their child had died some years ago and they were both heavily into ghosts, spirits and the like. They were on talking about some ghost or ghoul or some sort.
Tubs mentioned something about the lifer being a bit of mentor to Ryan, with the lifer casually mentioning that he had been asked by management to take a special intrest in Ryan and to look after him.
No, I don’t attribute any of the specific shadier dealings towards the end of Tubridy’s time in RTÉ to Andrews. The blame for that omnishambles lie to varying degrees at the doorsteps of Noel Kelly, Ryan Tubridy, and Dee Forbes.
I think it was pretty obvious what I was saying; that his familial connections historically were not an obstacle to his onboarding or progression within RTÉ.
Alot of the staff woulda crossed over between the times of the grandfather and Ryan. RTE look after their own and always have done. Jesus youd swear we owed a livin to gerry ryans family
It's obvious now, and I would agree with you the the connections probably did Tubridy no harm when it came to getting a foot on the bottom rung of the ladder in RTE.
I did chuckle a little at this review. I wonder will they use that in any future advertising campaigns (should they survive of course), the kind seen in the old Aer Lingus in-flight Cara Magazine for example:“Shanahan’s On The Green - it’s for fat rich Yanks who want the NY steakhouse experience in a foreign country. “
I’ve seen worse straplines in my time.
It's not a coinkydink that David Cameron and Boris Johnson were a pair of buffoons who were together at Eton and Oxford and then both went on to become prime ministers. They are part of a class system and move in the same elite circles that grease the wheels for admittance into a life of luxury and prestige, regardless of talent or ability. Doors just open for them, as if by osmosis.
Ryan wouldn't be entirely unfamiliar with that concept.
myself and Bobson tend to dine out on the NK account at Peploes tbh. Much better range of whiskeys there too.
