Following on from main thread in Current Affairs about Tubs in general (now closed and mod suggestion that Entertainment category is more suitable).
Indeed, entertainment in certain respects is what Tubs has provided, albeit perhaps in a way not intended. And still awaiting 150k payback to the licence fee holder.
And of course, his new career in Virgin Radio which is imminent.

in fairness he’s working for Rupert Murdoch now, who did the most of anyone in the last 50 years to wreck Britain.
Yes, the only reason he is on a radio station in the UK and in particular Virgin Radio is because the highest positions in management right up to the CEO of NewsUK supposedly want 'personalities' presenting music led programming as they believe that is a winning formula. Virgin Radio has a very small audience share within the UK and in terms of 'personalities' nobody is really interested in tuning into VRUK apart for music content post Chris Evans at 10am. They pushed out Eddie Temple-Morris, a very experienced music jock to accommodate Tubridy - an unknown in UK broadcasting but nevertheless a 'personality'. He wasn't successful at stimulating the UK audience during his stints at BBC radio and has not developed into any kind of a competent music jock required for music radio.
^
Plus there's the Paddy Power money warming the seat.
Hmmmmm.
What on earth did you base this on? Some twitter comments about Murdoch? Murdoch owned press operated in Ireland for decades. Did he wreck Ireland?
I don't think that you understand the UK media or the role Murdoch and his publications played in UK politics for the last 50 years or so. His backing was often critical for parties seeking government.
Regards…jmcc
But did this "wreck" Britain? By the 00s newspapers had virtually no influence.
What's the biggest Pay TV service in the UK? Ever heard of Sky News? The newspapers still had influence in the 2000s. The Sun and the Times were owned by Murdoch. Then there's broadcast radio.
NewsUK is a subsidiary of Fox Corp so I would suppose Tubridy would need to be careful as to how he expresses his political views as they may clash with the views of the parent company. But then again someone like Tubs is probably a Ryan Who? to someone like Rupert Murdoch and his sons.
scandalous the head of gov of this country supporting that gouger by going on his podcast. its incredible really and truly - what a dope. Heard 10 mins of tubs at the weekend and he didnt mention a book so i guess its not broadcast in the UK He did mention that anyone who is a fan of the Beatles he would be a fan of???? so I guess if Fred west likes the beatles so ryan would help him with the house renovations now that he knows the navies down the irish centre.. Lads ye have bobson rattled - on the ropes!
I'd argue that that is really just
Britain: We vote conservative.
Ireland: Ah! now after all we've progressed as a country!
Britain: We voted Brexit.
Ireland: Ah! sure to be the jaysus ye can't be doing that now, begorrah
Simon Harris: I wish I was PM of the UK, I'd get them back to basics, do you think he likes me!
Sky News has never made a profit and was hardly watched in the UK with very low viewers. Sky News is also an impartial News organisation which is regulated.
The influence of Murdoch has always been vastly over estimated. And he certainly didn't wreck Britain. The 24 hour satellite TV revolution is something which so many Irish people embraced.
It is pretty shocking considering Tubridy’s titular role in the scandal of last summer (which still isn’t fully resolved) that any politician would go on the podcast tbh, but welcome to Ireland eh?
On my 3rd day in London now and not a single person has asked me about Ryan Tubridy, and not a single taxi driver has heard of him. I’m shocked to my very core…..
^^^ The Sarcasm is Strong with this one, in the last sentence.
Pat Kenny heavily promoting Tubs' podcast with Simon Harris on his show today.
Long-term colleague? Yes
Fellow NK stablemate? Yes
Even with all that, pass the sick bucket 🤢
Not really surprising when you realise how incredibly corrupt this country is. Someone will be on to tell me now that Ireland is one of the least corrupt countries in the world.
"…and not a single taxi driver has heard of him."
Why would you ask taxi drivers whether or not they had heard of Ryan Tubridy?
Think oul Duke burst his bubble pointing out the book of Kells came from iona ?
I would have my own view regarding Sky News being impartial. Yes, Fox no longer have a stake in it and many left wing progressive journalists and broadcasters would be of the view that Sky News is free from political bias. Although it is supposed to be controlled independently, it is still under the umbrella of Comcast…
lol
British broadcasters are subject to OFCOM rules. No idea what a left wing progressive journalist is btw. Something you'd hear Americans say which has no meaning in real life.
Fine
If you think this is corruption, you have never experienced actual corruption.
Because actual corruption barely exists in Ireland, and has mostly been connected to FF (with some whiffs from FG)
Log rolling like this wouldn't even cause people in actually corrupt countries to bat an eyelid.
Most forms of corruption in the west is now done through legal means.
You just have to question how Irish drama series are being funded.
The Second series of Obituary was given 4% (350k) of its total budget from the CnaM under the sound and vision fund, I'd love to know how a small Irish Drama is costing 8.7m (nearly 2m per hour). I'd love to see how that money is funneled through accounting processes.
Or just look that the building of some infrastructure in this country.
Just because you do something within the law doesn't necessary stop it from being corrupt.
I had to, simply to dispel the myth put forward by some posters on this thread that his arrival in London was akin to the second coming of Christ, or that he’s amongst the most famous people living in the city at the moment.
To read some of the posts from the pro-Tubridy camp you’d think he’s single-handedly revolutionising radio in Britain; when the reality is your average punter in the UK doesn’t know the name of the radio station he’s on, let alone have a fiddlers as to who the chap is.
The pro Tubs posters aren't really pro Tubs though 😀
.
"….the myth put forward by some posters on this thread that his arrival in London was akin to the second coming of Christ, or that he’s amongst the most famous people living in the city at the moment."
I don't think that even Bobson, his most deluded cheerleader, has implied anything like that.
it wasn’t meant literally, more tongue in cheek hyperbole to highlight the point. I did think that was rather obvious, but apparently not - my apologies.
Perhaps I’m being a cynic, but the majority of those seem….how shall I put this….”lacking in authenticity” to me.
Just seeing the piece on the resilience conference in Dubai. Ryan appears to be a strange choice of speaker - unless of course all the attendees have been the face of a national scandal, accused of underhand financial dealings, and lied to an Oireachtas Committee - I can’t imagine many of them found value in his ostrich-like approach to putting your head into the ground for a few weeks, deny everything in the face of all available evidence, deliver a vomit-inducing defence about your enormous salary not affecting your soul, then pretend you’ve never been happier exiled in London when you’ve snatched defeat from the jays of an improbable victory due to an inability to keep your bloody mouth shut and having to have the last word……
I don’t know. Maybe he got to sell a few copies of one of his books in the lobby after the gig to make it worth his while? At this rate we might see him at the Ideal Homes Exhibition selling unpulped copies of JFK in Ireland or whatever the book inserted his image into repeatedly was titled.
