Then they illustrate a registration plate in exact contravention of the previous statement?

What's with the added 'dashes/hyphens'?

The reason I'm querying this is I'm after ordering a set of plates based on the first statement above - with no other marks (dashes/hyphens) between the sets of letters and numbers.

Is there any definitive regulation saying that there even need to be spaces between these sets of number and letters, or are the set I've ordered legal?

I think the argument was that each state document had to be translated into Irish also. The Irish language lobby wanted them to change all the lettering on that basis, the writing on the top was the compromised reached. That’s my recollection of it anyway 😁

The new white plates with the year, were introduced in 1987.

In 1990 they introduced the blue stripe with the EU flag on it, some Irish language 'enthusiast' , kicked up a fuss about us losing our identity in Europe, and they introduced the county in Irish on the top to shut her up.

funny was just discussing this with my daughter who's learning to drive as we pulled in behind a girl racer, A4 modded,

had a dark non reflective yellow and the smallest black print i've ever seen, in bumper to bumper traffic and right behind her

i could just about make out the year and county but some of the numbers struggled a bit, i take it the M50 toll cameras havent a hope to see it? do they need to swop these over then for NCT?

On the car I was driving there did indeed seem to be slightly faded hyphens that I'd never even noticed! Was sure I'd seen reg plates before with just numbers and letters.

Next question will be, will I take the gamble on putting them through the NCT or just buy another set.

OP. The regulations specifically refer to plates with dashes between the numbers and letters applying to vehicles registered before 2012. Any after that cannot have any other markings, presumably because there is an extra number involved in the year.

Whether it’s enforced or not is a separate issue.

I've commented on the law regarding numberplates before.

And while the law is clear, there are irregularities with the enforcement.

The DPP has told gardai not to prosecute for non confirming plates, as there is an anomaly in the legislation, that had been there for a number of years and had not yet been fixed.

TBH, when they overhauled the RTA in 2010, they closed a few loopholes and opened a few more.

You will not find any record of a person being prosecuted for non confirming number plates in the past 6 or 7 years.

Cork has 18 wardens and Galway 12.

Other local authorities employ wardens mostly operating in the larger towns.

While AGS enforcement numbers are down they still issued 283,516 fines last year.

It would be an easy catch for wardens and AGS could just add it to their list.

Or we can continue as we are.

Revenue can impose fines.

So in practice unless you are stopped by a multi agency checkpoint detection is unlikely.

If responsibility was passed to AGS/traffic wardens compliance would possibly improve.

Well it's Ireland after all. Conformity is not in our genes, and as in so many facets of life here, there is probably ambiguity/indifference regarding enforcement of the law pertaining to license plate regulation. Is it the Garda or the Revenue who are supposed to oversee these matters?

Honestly no one really cares these days. I got a set of metal pressed plates without hyphens and black EU flags. Come NCT I'm just going to swap it to my old plates.

I remember about 10 years ago there was someone on my street with a 2003 Polo that didn't have the county name in Irish on the plate, but looked standard enough otherwise. Except for about a week or two every year when the plate was swapped out for a compliant one!

You need to consult SI 318 of 1992.

It's very detailed and includes the exact spec. Of the hyphens.

Doesnt seem to matter what you put on your car these days - Ive never seen anyone penalised for not conforming to the regulations regarding plates.

Dont get me started with 3D plates , 4D plates (have we invented time travel yet), black on dark grey plates.

FFS you could get your 2 year old to use a pink crayon to write on a white piece of plastic and stick it on your car as a reg plate and you`d still be grand driving it.
