You can't thank twice - second time removes the first thank if there was one.

Alas the appeals process went with the Vanilla platform, meaning we have increasing numbers of banned users just rotting away in cyberspace with no thanks available to temper the agony

That's been the case since the move to Vanilla. However, even on posts that are tall enough, the list will only ever show a maximum of ten.
FYI, the browser extension in my signature adds back the old method of viewing thanks as it was before the migration i.e. automatically displayed at the bottom of every post (up to a maximum of 100 thanks per post):
