My guess is that the main pay off might be throwing the Russian advance in Dombass off balance and so that they can push at a weak point on one of the Southern fronts. Also possible leverage to get the Russians to withdraw from Ukraine if they can occupy enough territory.
it was worth it for the memes and the lulz alone
But who are we to say? It’s up to Ukrainians who i suspect rather move fast than rot in trenches
Hard to believe UAF able to air power in Kursk
They had to have moved AA to the border.
Update of things so far
There's talk (Russian) of Ukrainian force concentrations near Hlukhiv which could potentially be a second salient north of the first incursion and could provide flank coverage in that direction. No sign of them crossing there yet though towards the largest Russian town in that area, Rylsk.
russias biggest weaknesses are it's need to project strength and seem invincible and it's military logistics. Both are being made look ridiculous now. If this turns out to be just a raid and retreat, russia will still have pour in forces and try build defences while under constant artillery fire from across the border. Plus they will need to backfill every inch of their border with Ukraine to prevent the exact same thing happening. This could be the turning point in who has the initiative in the war.
I'd be watching how Lukashenko reacts to this too, he could go very cold on putin if all of a sudden russia has to empty Belarus of their troops to plug this hole.
The Caucasus's are kicking up now too.
Where has Ukraine found all these troops from?
I've seen reports of attacks on S400 and even S500 Sam sites around the Kursk Bridge in recent days.
Will the bridge get hit next?
I know its not likely, given the Block-type of F-16's delivered and relative armaments, but Christ what a political coup it would be to see footage of the Bridge getting hit, as seen the targeting pod lens of a fresh Ukrainian F16.
However, I do believe the Bridge will be attacked very, very soon.
:)

F-16's may be involved in incursion:

F-16 fighter jets have been spotted along the frontline
in the country's southern Kherson region, according to a Russia-installed official.
The fourth-generation jets, provided by the West in recent weeks, were seen over the Ukrainian settlement of Kakhovka in the past two days, according to Pavlo Filipchuk, the Russian-backed head of the southern district.
Kakhovka sits on the largely Russian-controlled east bank of the Dnieper River, which has broadly marked the frontline for much of the full-scale war.
On Sunday, Ukraine officially confirmed that the Lockheed Martin-made aircraft had arrived in the country and were already operational with Kyiv's air force.
"Since yesterday, F-16 [fighters] have been flying over our district," Filipchuk said in remarks published by Tass, the Russian state news agency. "This is being done only to sow panic."
Did someone mention Rybar? I'll bet they enjoyed drawing their latest map update at 2pm Eastern European time.
Edit: I'm behind with the Rybar updates. Note the warzone moved on from Sudzha in their update 3 hours later at 5pm Eastern European Time.
Not to put too much of a dampener on things, but I don't think that targeting pods were included in any of the aid packages? Given the F-16s origin as a light fighter, these pods need to be carried externally, although I recall some F-16s having mounting points on their nose for that.
Ain’t Kherson in the south? Kursk is opposite side up north
....
They weren't, which is why I said unlikely.
Also, the silence from the UA government and Deepstate blogs etc is deafening, with rumours that they were asked not to make a deal of it. one blogger stating that, given how stretched and exhausted the Russian troops are, it would take just 25,000 troops to get to Moscow.
Of course, then we are into fantasy existential wonderland, but many believe this move is genius.
Any thoughts on the goal? Nuclear power plant? Pipeline to Hungary? To cause deep panic?
Yep
They have been systematically destroying logistics and did I read that they've sunk 3 rail ferries. If the right cargo is required to be transported across the bridge it could give a helping hand.

Someone need to do a Putin in a bunker video meme soon

Yes
At the rate they are going the UAF will have more of Kursk than they do of Kharkiv
Lol
Im getting no work done as I keep refreshing twitter and Reddit feeds
Lol, someone's getting dropped from a window.
I wonder did Scholz know, and if he didn't just what kind of meltdown he's having right now
They need they make this work, could be their one and only chance.
Clashes in Lgov. I dont see anyway the UAF got there already. Must be sabotage groups working ahead. But the speed of the UAF and bypasses Russian army placements seems to be working. Almost Blitzkrieg in it's style.
Time to dog pile russia
Lgov is 62km from the border which was "defended" so they must have set out from maybe 10k back you would assume. 72km in as many hours for the advance force.
Momentum is on their side & they need to use it wisely which you know they will.
Your efforts are much appreciated
