I’m wondering what form this would take. Would the Chinese government simply own the Russian side of the Tuman river bank as a private enterprise while sovereignty technically remains with Russia. Or is this another Alaska, where the Russians are actually seeding this territory to China in return for cash?
Beyond direct access to North Korea (and Russian rail links to Pyongyang are often done via Northern China anyway), I’m guessing there’s little value of Russia holding that land beyond the patriotic value of it forever belonging to the Motherland. But for a country bleeding cash, a big payday may be worth it.
Indeed. One would almost be of the mind that some posters are intentionally cherry-picking negative news to post here in order to undermine support for Ukraine’s war-effort. Almost as if that was their entire goal of posting here…
Almost…
It's bizarre alright
Yeah, they'd been making slow progress towards this for a while now. While a lot of people's attention has been focused up in Kharkiv, Russians have been still slowly advancing down south east.
I wouldn't be too worried yet, UAF have been steadily degrading air defence from Crimea to up along the southern front line. Should make it easier for UAF air power to reverse these gains.
Is it disingenuous to 'like' every "both sides", "Russia had no choice", "Ukraine is corrupt", "the West is to blame", "you can't trust Ukrainian accounts" post, and then post links to reports of Russian success while claiming to be disappointed?
Just asking like.
Not good news

well no surprises there, the Chinese must be rubbing their eyes on disbelief
I wouldn't let yourself get so upset over social media.
even this them sad ruSSian cnuts could not invent themselves. Had to copy Darth Putin. What a sad scum nation!
The special relationship delivers again for China.

China historically held the area until the Russian Empire took control in the 1860s. China has repeatedly urged Russia and North Korea to allow Chinese vessels to navigate the river to the Sea of Japan, proposing the creation of a special economic zone along its banks.Russia used to be reluctant on the idea, concerned that it would increase China's influence in Northeast Asia. But its attitude is changing as the power dynamic between Moscow, Beijing and Pyongyang shifts.

🤣
I'd love to know how they managed that. Like looking at google maps, what sort of flight vectors did they use to pull this off? Where Azov is located, i assumed it would be well protected
More russian oil up in smoke.
Yes, he'd have some job getting a life insurance policy going by how he looks. One of his 3 eldest sons is being groomed to replace him, and his eldest was married at 16, just in case anything happened to Kadyrov, but lately, there's much talk about a younger son, Adam being the successor. In any case, regardless of what happens in Moscow, the word has gone out in Chechnya that no matter what happens to Kadyrov, the position of president of Chechnya will remain firmly in the Kadyrov family. Just in case anyone might be getting any presidential ideas….
Well whatever about the rest of them , going by the videos of him the last month or 2 I doubt Kadyrov knows what day of the week it is, never mind trying to take power in Russia.
Guy looks on his last legs.
If it's a known issue, strange that they haven't come up with a "fix" for it by now? Sure, missing a few of these sound proofing tiles is not mission critical as they would be on the space shuttle, nonetheless even aside from that, they are very unsightly to landlubbers.
That kind of attitude might have carried some weight maybe a month or two ago, when Ukraine was at a very low ebb due to a weapons shortage, and you were making minute gains (even it was at unbelievable costs in terms of men and equipment) and you were asked would you consider making a peace deal with Ukraine, and you replied " You dont make peace deals when you have the upper hand." How times have changed Vladimir!!
Or even a nice cup of tea with the Boss??
I remember reading somewhere recently that despite it being against the law / constitution etc. there were 7 private armies in Russia (6 now i guess with Prigozhin eliminated) and when / if Putin goes, you could see a battle royal between them vying for power. They include Kadyrov and even that man of peace, Patriarch Kirill.
Beyond pathetic. Donald Trump level of bullsh*t. The kind of people that if you played them back videos of them saying the exact opposite 6 months earlier they'd insist it's AI generated and fake.
The only positive: if the change of tune is being dictated from above it's a sign that even Putin and the military are starting to at least consider how they can end this thing while saving face
"the nearer you were to the boss, the nearer you were to the door"
Or the window?
that’s a good summary of last week:
“ A TWO-DAY peace summit in Switzerland has resulted in 180 nations advocating for a peace between Ukraine and Russia that sees Ukraine’s territorial integrity respected.
While this summit is clearly a waste of time, a rival summit attended by Vladimir Putin could be the breakthrough the world has desperately hoped for.
“Those 180 nations aren’t the only ones focused on peace, we had our own summit and after much challenging debate between myself and my cabinet who fear I’ll poison them for questioning me, the consensus is that peace is possible if Ukraine just changes its flag, gives Russia all its territory and get used to be being called ‘also Russia’,” Vladimir Putin, kidnapper of Ukrainian children, declared at the Russian conference.“
you will become a very rich person if you can contract into a defence company and come up with a way to permanently attach anechoic tiles.
The Twitter post doesn’t poke fun at structural issues but that these subs are easy to track underwater now due to this damage
Which you would think be highly undesirable for a strategic nuclear sub
Not the first time we seen bad maintenance in Russian navy, their coal powered aircraft carrier had to be towed and is now in dry dock
Just on the first one, those missing panels aren't structural. Those are anechoic hull panels, designed to make the submarine harder to detect, and it's far from unknown for submarines to lose a few of those over the course of a patrol. Here's a picture of the Royal Navy's HMS Triumph, a Trafalgar-class nuclear submarine, with quite a few panels missing from its sail:
There are certainly plenty of things to poke fun at with the Russian military, but that particular issue is not one of them… for a change…
How to deal with the 9 NATO countries who aren’t pulling their weight ?
Probably no coincidence that the 9 who underpay are also geographically pretty secure. The likes of Spain, Luxembourg or Portugal probably aren’t worried about being invaded.
Whereas the larger investors are concentrated in Eastern Europe.
If you use the analogy of an insurance policy, maybe it’s normal that those at higher risk pay more
While he at it perhaps he can cast his gaze at whoever was meant to maintain his nuclear deterrence
Meanwhile
The 2024 version of the royal family being lined up for the chop.
Putin does love his Russian history.
Be an interesting one if others in Russia are playing Putin at chess and lining him up and now his family up for the chop.
The Sun has it that Putin is grooming his 9 year old son to take his place. Hey Kadyrov is doing it.
Assuming that they live long enough to get to the Hague…. used to be a saying that the nearer you were to the boss, the nearer you were to the door….but with Putin it should read " nearer you are to Putin, the nearer you are to the grave"..
Also drones,
