It would be great to have the Shannon Cabin Crew base back because I don’t see how it works bussing crew down from DUB. The Cabin crew get 3 hours added onto there day. They get bussed down to SNN before going to JFK/BOS. The cost of overnighting crew in Limerick costs a lot aswell.
it will be a cold day in hell when Aer Lingus reopen a Shannon base.
Agree with all of the above and the probably not.
Wondering how many flights is the tipping point, it seems like in an ordinary world we are close
Hope you mean that in a good way. 😂 I for one would be delighted to see it back open. SNN was so lucky to have the crew it had before
I know easyJet require 3 aircraft to be based in order to have crew based there. SNN may need a 320 to be based there again. Thats my own assumption though. Who knows about Aer Lingus. I do really hope they re open the base at somestage
Top 10 routes in Quarter 1 of 2024 as per latest CSO stats.
In a now deleted post on Twitter, DL are ending JFK-SNN a month early and as of now it’s not been loaded for next summer while other seasonal routes have.
Why is SNN expansion dependant on the lifting of the DUB passenger cap? The article doesn't explain.
https://www.clare.fm/news/ryanair-ceo-says-plans-increase-shannon-traffic-50-dependent-lifting-dublin-passenger-cap/
Looks to be ending in September
Usual Ryanair waffle.
The old phrase of "paper never refused ink" springs to mind.
The media know Ryanair can be relied on for a good soundbite.
SNN JFK restarted 24 May this year and DL schedule is loaded until mid May 2025. Likely not loaded yet.
This is someone just starting a rumour saying its ending.
Most airlines have little interest serving outside Dublin and even less so if they are forced. The likes of FR and EI will never expand at SNN/ORK at scale while the DUB cap exists. They will throw a few extra routes if the Government intervene and lift the cap but the idea among some people in the West than DUB capped is a good thing for SNN are mistaken. MOL knows not expanding outside DUB because of the cap is wise at this point. It would just give in to the narrative the cap is good for other Irish airports.
Shannon management, we hope, have learnt the lesson of been a pawn in Ryanair's games.
The article is simply usual Ryanair PR guff.
Aimed at the media and fanboys who lap it up.
There's a place for SNN being a connection to Europe for US travellers a la KEF, I could see a base being reopening in those circumstances. The A321LRs are perfect for that kind of mission. I expect AA to bring back PHL-SNN when they start getting their A321XLR deliveries, not sure they'll come in time for Summer '25, but definitely Summer '26.
If UA can make a 757 work on ORD then the economics on an A321LR should be pretty good.
It's great DL are running a 767, but its too big a bird for JFK-SNN in Y, though I'll say at least on the dates I've looked at, the premium cabins look pretty full. Lot of dollars willing to pay for a lie flat to go play golf at Lahinch etc.
In order for Shannon to be a hub you'd need an airline willing to make it a hub airport. Random airlines with random routes does not a hub make, you need alignment.
I'm sure there'll be some transfer traffic, but without any airline to make a go of it I can't see it ever happening.
Cathal Crowe and Timmy Dooley both posting about a KLM plane training at Shannon again. Has happened a few times.
What do people think are the chances of KLM finally launching a route?
I wouldn't read into it.
Many airlines use Shannon for training or maintenance. Have seen EasyJet, Jet2 and BA here countless times, to name a few.
Would be fantastic to have a route to Amsterdam though.
It means nothing. Airlines do training at Shannon because it's a quiet airport.
Sometimes aircraft are in testing after a maintenance check at one of the MROs based there.
Then there's the likes of Airbus sending the A350, A380 and even the Beluga XL to Shannon for crosswind testing.
You also see aircraft on acceptance flights before an airline finalises a lease.
And finally, it was a 777 training. They definitely wouldn't be putting one of those on any potential SNN-AMS route.
At the risk of asking a stupid question what are the short term prospects?
It sounds like Ryanair growth is frozen due to DAA cap
Transatlantic may gain another provider over the winter, it might not either.
Aer Lingus likely to add Faro twice weekly for next year.
Are there other providers likely to enter the market to fill Northern Europe role.
Id be interesting in knowing the same. The last new route announced was LPL in Dec 2022. The rest after that were current routes being extended to winter.
I wonder if there are any plans for next Winter 24/25
You won't get any real 'prospects' months before a route is launched, to a lay observer it's often quite sudden.
What Ryanair says and what Ryanair does are two different things. If it makes economic sense to expand from Shannon, they will.
Just because you don't hear noise, doesn't mean nothing it happening.
Michael O'Leary will love the upgrade and extension of the ground floor for his passengers.
It seems that this extension will reduce the radius of this airbridge.
Michael O'Leary couldn't care less about passenger comfort. He's only interested in what his costs are.
And the airbridge wouldn't ever extend out to that stand, so no loss loss of use.
The extra space will make it a bit more comfortable for passengers though.
How will it reduce the radius of the air bridge when thats for Gate 6? the extension is the opposite direction? Over stand 28
I’m presuming it’s becuse stands and gates are numbered differently?!? That may be gate 6 but according to google maps, it’s also stand 28
Gate 6 is stand 30 though and clearly the direction the airbridge is going. Its not going towards stand 28 at all. Stand 28 has no air bridge ?
You can clearly see here Gate 6/Stand 30 have no affect to Stand 28.
Few beers in me last night and confused myself with your post a little I think. Yes your right, I don’t think the extension has any impact on the airbridge.
Granted the image below is an old one but it would give a fair idea of how close the extension would be to the airbridge if it tried to service the stand 28.
The bridge doesn't go that direction anymore. The extension will have zero effect on gate 6.
Exactly its a old image. Air bridges in Shannon dont go that direction any more. Stand 26B-28 are completly free from air bridges and they cant serve them. Stand 30-42 have air bridges and will have no effect on the extension
