Can't say I'm in favor of where we're going with this. Whatever about a congestion charge like london, an outright ban seems too… cabbage ryan… for my liking.
All Uniformed Gardai to conduct at least 30 mins road safety policing on every shift…
Hopefully should cut down on poor/dangerous motorist behavior…
Are you confused about the concept of 'sofa'?
Seems like a bit of a knee jerk reactionary measure, rather than a strategic approach. Does it really make sense to do 30 minutes work each shift, or would they be better off doing one full shift each week or similar?
Yeap it is, Ireland has a 19% increase in road deaths compared to a drop of 1% drop across Europe…
Drugs, drink, Speed. distraction/phone use… all need to be tackled to improve road safety..
Nope, you're the one with the sofa crush. I quote you:
"There's a difference between trying to reduce the number of single occupancy cars driving through the city taking up space with their empty couch and empty armchair"
Your cargo bike with 1m to 1.5m safe zone is bigger than a mini.
But I will leave you be. You have some serous material for tomorrow's onslaught of posting. RTE 1 right now.
I don't have a cargo bike. Even if I did, it wouldn't take a sofa. Maybe try adding your safe zone to the Mini before you compare.
I will simplify this for you such that you can understand=
You refer to a car as carrying an empty chair and a couch.
I replied in jest describing your bike as a single sofa. You with me so far? Good.
If you take a bike and then add a 1.5m safety zone around it, it becomes the size of a small car. Still with me.?? Great. We are sucking diesel.
So why is your bike more entitled to hold up buses than my car?
Even when I agree with your posts you still argue.
You flip flop more than an Irish political party, In one quote cars are needed to keep a place safe, only 20 posts before, every one of your children and at least one of their friends was assaulted or robbed while in the city with out any car ban. I'm not sure you AI algorithm is polished enough just yet.
No, I'm not with you, mainly because there is no sofa seat on a bicycle, and because you're comparing a bike with a safety zone to a car with no safety zone. Try doing a sensible, fair comparison of, for a change.
I do now think I am am the stupid one for entertaining you. But one last try:
I mean this=
Not this=
You must understand now? Bike plus safe zone = big area?
Unless you think cyclists are superior to car drivers (and by default bus passanger) because your getting exercise and they are on the sofa! In which case I now understand you.
That 1.5m is applied to the lorry, not the bike…
The lorry is the dangerous vehicle and needs to offer safety to vulnerable road users
Have to say I love cars, love driving but the level of traffic is insane. Even on a random day you can be caught out badly. Unfortunately reality is it’s not sustainable for everyone to have a car. As much as I’d love to have driving restricted and be part of an elite few that could drive (fantasy land stuff), they are going to have to restrict cars.
Now my biggest issue with this is the carrot and stick approach. It’s 100% stick. Absolutely zero practical ideas for it. Cycle into town and have a high probability of having your bike nicked. Cycle lanes are good but some are complete nonsense and virtually none of them are maintained or cleaned.
Why aren’t the public transport services 24 hour? Also 99% of public transport brings you to city centre. It’s an ordeal trying to move sideways across the city (arguably supply and demand but still). Another big issue is lack of density towards city and town centres. Dublin City centre fairly flat while they are stuffing apartment blocks into the suburbs where it’s fairly impossible not to have a car.
How much space do you leave when passing a Mini?
Cyclists should start paying some sort of cycling tax to maintain the cycle paths and have new ones built.
milllimetres
What I actually said was
Take cars out of the city and they'll be as much of a danger, just elsewhere
What we need primarily to improve road safety is more enforcement. I accept that the cops can't do it as they are are understaffed and over worked so tech should really come into it. Simple things like speed cameras in the correct locations, red light cameras on every red light, yellow box junction cameras at every yellow box and average speed cameras that aren't confined to two junctions of our motorway network.
Even your idea of more bus gates, while not a bad idea in terms of public health and a faster moving city, also needs to be enforced. What's the point in a bus gate primarily being used by cars? Also there's a need to consider that replacing cars with an unreliable bus service will kill off any city centre and move the problems you mention to the suburbs as people will vote with their feet
Any thoughts on the appropriate level for the walking tax that pedestrians should have to pay to maintain the footpaths and have new ones built? Should we charge per step walked perhaps?
So you're outing yourself as a really dangerous driver then?
No, just can't be bothered engageing with you
Presumably because you don't like your nonsensical comparison of bicycle plus passing space against Mini with no passing space being exposed?
I younger me would have expressed what I think about your opinions and relentless denial of service posting techniques.
But I don't have time for you today....I need to head off in my 200bhp 2 ton lazy boy diesel powered sofa. Stay off the roads Andrew, planet killer coming through!
I can, the point, AndrewJRenko, is that a single occupant bike cycling in front of bus on a road without a cycle lane is holding up a bus just as much (if not more so due to lower speed) as a single occupant car like a mini, regardless of how many comfortable seats are present.
As ever, the point will, again, escape you as you argue with your shadow and destroy any credible points you try and make.
if cars are removed then less people around at night, less buses and taxis too so you will have large public realms with neither the security of passing traffic or gardai to police it.
Why, in the name of God, do you think there would be fewer people around if there is less traffic? Why do you think there would be fewer Gardaí also, while we're at it? You're conflating two separate issues that are completely unrelated and using one to demonise the other, there's no logic behind it.
I mean, fewer cars could mean an INCREASE in foot traffic for all you know, making the streets safer. And that's ignoring the fact that passing traffic isn't exactly gonna jump out to the rescue of someone getting slapped around OR that there is pretty much zero Gardaí patrolling the streets anyway. "I think restricting cars is a bad idea because I need the general public to keep me safe from criminals" is a pretty ridiculous stance to take.
Your 'denial of service' analogy is about as credible as your 'sofa seat on a bike' analogy. Which is not very credible, just ICYMI.
If you want to compare space taken on the roads, either include passing space for all road users or exclude passing space for all users.
Yes, that is technically correct. The important context that you're leaving out would be;
Not a serious comment but it could mean that if you are accosted by a hawker or mugger you could run into the traffic to avoid them. But then some people are fit enough to do that.
Cyclists don't hold up buses as much though as they essentially never get caught in traffic. They slow them, they never stop them.
Planet killer coming through…for now.
I have to say it's laughable to say a bike is the same size as a car because of an imaginary "safe zone"
Funny how 5 bikes can fit side by side at traffic lights and all take off at the same time. Lets see you do that with 5 cars.
I don’t think I imagined anything
Just another reason to take cars off the road then. There's no way cars can give the imaginary space on the quays.
I agree with you Fr Pio, And will repeat for you. I agree with you.
Take the cars and bikes off the quays. More room for mass public transport. If it makes sense to remove the obstacles to free flowing buses, let's do it right! Amen
For reference, this map posted by IrishCycle.com is helpful in identifying the restrictions which some here seem to this will be the end of our city centre and its law and order…
The blue is legally defined as the city centre. The yellow will still allow cars in and out, but it will be harder to drive through. The red lines on the quays are around about where the bus gates will be.
