Four new Standard Definition tests with pattern and tone have appeared on LCNs 9, 10, 28 and 31.
No, I think they were referring to HD on their player
Less that they are “subsidising” carriage per se but at least originally Sky did not charge RTE either a carriage fee or an EPG placement charge. (RTE did have to shell out a one off cost for the satellite uplink). Not sure if that is still the case but I do know a few years ago RTE argued it should be paid to be carried on Sky which quite clearly wasn’t its position in 2002.
In any case, all that applied to RTE and TG4. The terms of VMTV’s deal, which happened later on, were never publicised, IIRC. And none of it has any bearing on Saorview whatsoever. The reason VMTV is not HD in Saorview is very simple - it is down to the rate card making it uneconomic.
On a related note anyone know why RTE1 is in HD in N. Ireland on Sky Glass/Sky Stream but not on Sky?
I have no idea. Maybe northern Ireland is different to the Republic of Ireland for HD channels on sky but just don't know

Interesting that it's HD on NI variant of Glass and Stream. I have wondered before why RTÉ1 isn't HD on Sky NI, yet RTÉ2 and TG4 are.

Freeview in the UK has gone a slightly different path, using HbbTV instead of DVB-I.
They can't even get the Player to work (whilst multiple companies around the world have a perfect streaming service), how the hell would anyone trust them to do this (but this is going off tangent for the thread)

Sky Sports News would be a great channel for them to have on would be a nice add to the platform and also promote sky sports.

Why is another test card appearing on LCN 32?
Are these tests coming from mainstream broadcasters or is it from 2RN carrying out more online broadcasts of Saorview in future.
