Question - what do ye do to treat a lamb with sore eyes. Lamb is 6 days old and noticed yesterday his eyes are very watery and barely open ?
Tia
A
A squirt of penicillin in the eye. Is the eye watering??
Are the eyelids turned in?
Yes both eye are slightly watering
how are you guys ewes holding up condition wise up to now ? Brought ewes into sheds today for first time and was abit shocked how more some of them were . Not lambing for another 5 to 6 weeks , so have uped meal feeding now , have done the same thing every year pre lambing feeding wise and most of the ewes are always in good condition, putting in down to all the rain we have been getting. Anyone else ewes back in condition this year ?
Mine are the complete opposite in great condition this year, have toned down the feeding abit as the el nino mild winter has given lovely cuts of grass for them. The mild winter isn't without its issues a few more lameness cases than the norm.
Yea mine are actually in better condition than other years too but on very god silage and hay for past few months. Once u have spotted them now u have time to correct it. Are they upto date for the fluke dose?
no we don’t have fluke on this farm , but I think il try and dose them at the weekend for it , to be safe . What product or stage of fluke would I need to use at this time of year ?
You’d want something that kills mature fluke. Either fasinex or ‘end of fluke would target mature fluke. Even if u have t normally fluke this year is horrendous wet since autumn
Relentless wet weather since the middle of last summer has presented its challenges and its years like this that make me glad I'm dealing with small numbers. Some coughing among the Ladies inside but I seem to be doing better than alot of my neighbours in that regard, especially early lambers
James Fox getting hardship with watery mouth ..heart goes out to him.
He should test the quality and quantity of the ewes colostrum
Have a cull ewe lame the last few weeks, not very bad as in lying down all the time but is hobbling. I have caught her a few times and checked the foot, pared the hoof and given a shot of blue spray, no footrot. What else should i try, does she need an injection.
Might be a muscular isue?
Could try a shot of Draxxin from the Vets
Yes they were so had to give an injection of Dipen under the eye. Hopefully he will improve now.
Even 1cc of penicillin would do.
If there's any cover on her at all let her go. She'll only spread it through the flock.
i always put lime around water trought or scrathing pole i find it really helps the sheep getting lame
I might do that. Any idea what sort of trade culls are at the minute?
And lick buckets too. Stops the spread of it I think/hope
88 kg €150
That seems a good price, trade must be good
What price are ewes in lamb making. I'm loosing 40 acres of rented land and have to be out of march. Sheep due from the 1st of April.
Sheep are in good form with a mixture of Lanarkshire and mules.
I was hoping to negotiate an extra month and sell with lambs at foot but not looking great
Could you not bring them home for the month and sell them as they lamb? Sell out of the shed with lambs. May not be possible but ewes with lambs are a much better trade than in lamb ewes
I dont have access to sheds at home. Ive 4 acres at the house, then 3 other plots of roughly 10 actes each. I've all the stock on them 40 acres now so hopefully have a nice picking on other fields. It's having somewhere to lamb them down now.
Looking for some advice, have a sheep lambed to twins 4 am friday morning let them out all day today no problems putting them back into shed this evening. No problems had taken to both and was letting both suck. literally gave sheep nuts and both lambs sucked while she was eating outside the shed and within 10 mins in the pen in the shed she started rejecting the smaller of the twins.
Is it the Full Moon tonight or different smells in the shed that upset the sheep or is she just a bitch (my opinion).
What the best thing to do, have her haltered ATM but doubt that'll do much good, looks like another pet.
Put a lick over her head. Or get the dog into the shed
Dipped ewes this morning. Am I OK to scan next week?
You'll need to tell your scanner, the advice is to wear protective clothing if you have to handle sheep within 3 mths of dipping. I know shearers that won't handle sheep if they are smelling of dip
handlers are most at risk from absorption through the skin
