I guess the show needs it's own thread. The plan is that Oliver Callen, Brendan Courtney and couple of other tba hosts will do it will into the winter. It very much looks like the vacancy is left open for Tubs to return.
People never factor in the pensions liability that doesn’t come into play with a contractor.
All the old staffers come with a massive pensions liability.
RTE can't win.
It's a given that comedy/satire is a subjective thing. They offer a wide range of it (here is just some of it)
Irish Comedy - RTÉ Player (rte.ie)
but because some curmudgeon's don't like one show it's a 'scandal'. 😁
Live and let live.
You want us to have sympathy for poor Ballsy?
He gets 245k for being onair 4hrs per week, plus perhaps a little bit of prep time before the show.
He also earns a wage from the Irish Independent.
I'd love to work out his hourly rate from rte. I would shock and stun most of the public I'm sure, especially when we hear Courtney is getting €400 per hour for covering Callan. And don't argue he has to do loads of prep for that cover job, it's just waffle that needs little to no prep.
It seems that no lessons have been learnt.
welcome to boards, ryan !
He's From Monaghan Show
For maybe 42 weeks a year approx? Works out at around €1,500 per hour on air.
Anything that didn't reference the name of the presenter. Why is RTE so keen to give away it's brand value to contractors?
Gwan the Farney!
Would you get outa that. Even if these figures represented the entire annual income of these contractors, they'd be doing fine. As it is, they have other income streams and plenty of time to fulfil them.
Paying tax and funding your pension applies to a great many people.
Joe Duffy painted him a welcome card aaaww 😚☺️
Making what? Lot's of bogus self employment out there with companies taking employees off the payroll and pension plan and paying them a few bob more but many would still be <€100K. You must hobnob with another crowd :)
I am sure Oliver (and/or his agent) had much input in calling and rubber stamping the show "Oliver Callan" rather than a generic name that another or replacement presenter can easily slot into without any fuss, like "Radio 1 at 9" or "9 on 1" or "The Radio 1 hour"
After a big rugby weekend, I for one will miss "Sports" Tubs at the start of the week with his insightful, delicious and intriguing musings on the goings on.

Where is the 'fuss' here?
Are you confusing the fuss from RTE detractors/Callan haters with a fuss in RTE?
They went through the normal motions, tried out a few replacement. interviewed for the job and appointed the new host. Like other shows with the main host in the title. temporary replacements slot in without fuss, if the host retires/leaves the name is changed to the new host (e.g Ronan Collins to Louise Duffy) Where was the 'fuss' except on here and online with the 'RTE can do no right' curmudgeons 😁
Yes, it is sound business sense for the presenter to push for this. So that when they up sticks and run to Newstalk or Today FM in a year or two's time, they bring their brand, which RTE have invested considerable resources in promoting, with them.
Do we really have to spell out why RTE should make sure they own and retain the branding of their products?
What annoys me is the use of jingles and emails with the main presenter's name when they have gone Walkabouts for weeks.
Did no one in RTE have the copon to produce LiveLine jingles without the 'with Joe Duffy'?
Easier to give them the chop Francie and move along. But I suppose Callan being from your neck of the woods, I can see you'd hold a candle for him. Having the show named after them, is principally an ego boost to the presenter. And Mr. Oliver's head has already noticeably swelled a bit since he got the gig!
I get the need to reform and fix RTE.
But reform fix something that is done the radio/TV world over? Just because you have it in for RTE?
And Oh My Gawd the audacity of someone to want to market themselves in the entertainment business!
Get a grip folks, a mountain being made out of a molehill outta spite.
There's nothing wrong with the presenter 'wanting to market themselves'.
The problem lies with RTE rolling over and leaving the presenter in control, instead of taking ownership of branding of their own products, as any sensible business would do.
That's nonsense. The world over TV and Radio shows have the host's name in them.
Maybe for real superstar hosts where the presenter is actually the main attraction, like Graham Norton or Jonathon Ross. Neither of them disappear for weeks leaving their show in someone else's hands though.
Callan isn't quite in that league, he's just starting out his presenter career, and RTE are rolling over to set him up to walk from the station and bring his listeners with him in the future.
Morning Ireland. Today. Liveline. Drivetime.
Where are you getting ‘rolling over’?
There is zero evidence of a roll over. They have done it before with other presenters.
Stop making up pejorative terms like rolling over. You aren’t privy to the negotiations and are just inventing to find something to give out about
Louise Duffy Show, Ray Darcy, John Creedon, John Kelly, Miriam, Gay Bryne, etc etc etc
You aren't privy to the negotiations so you're not in much of a position to lecture others. You said yourself that this is what presenters want, which leaves two options :
Either way, it's not a good look for RTE.
Why do we have the Late Late Show and not the Paddy Keilty Show? Because RTE have invested in the brand and made it bigger than any presenter.
I’m not inventing stuff. You introduced ‘rolled over’ and have nothing to back that up.
It is factually true that entertainers would be hugely keen to have their name front and centre.
It is clear RTE have no issue with that for some slots. If you are saying Louise Duffy has more negotiating power than Joe Duffy and was able to get RTE to roll over and Duffy failed I think you would be laughed out of the room.
You've nothing to backup your claim that they didn't roll over. You said yourself that's what presenters would want, so it's fairly obvious that they rolled over.
Joe Duffy took over Liveline, an existing brand from the time when RTE knew how to manage their brands. He's done his own bits at personalising it, with the jingles and the 'Talk to Joe' catchphrase.
Why would RTE want to hand over ownership of their brands to part-time contractors?
If Callan leaves he is not their brand. They change the name and we move on.
It’s not rocket science as it has happened many times before.
That's the problem. If Callan leaves, he takes the brand that they've spent a year or two investing in with him.
Any business should own the IP of their products. It's not rocket science.
