Jake Gyllenhaal is the lead
The original with Patrick Swayze is kinda a cult classic ( is anything with Swayze not a "cult classic 😁)
Conor McGregor also in this
Trailer looked fine to me as one of those get-the-beers-in movies. I mean being realistic it's not as if the original is high art, it's absolute so-bad-its-good crap.
I also thought Conor seemed....fine. Given the type of movie it is I think it'll be acceptable enough. Can't be any worse than Ronda Rousey in Fast and Furious.
Re: Wrestlers, John Cena started off very poorly, trying to do the Schwarzenegger schtick, and it kinda sucked. But he's grown immensely, and is by a country mile, vastly more talented and versatile than The Rock.
Peacemaker is hands down the best thing DC have ever done, and his performance is incredibly central to that.
Ballymun Creche Shade 😄
To be successful in the movie game you also need a lot of luck.
Without Terminator Schwarzenegger probably wouldn't have of had the career he did back in the 80s and 90s.
Great as Peacemaker
Now I kinda wanna see McGregor in a Kindergarten Cop remake.
I think if comparing him to wrestlers, he's more likely to do more movies that are similar to Kurt Angle or RVD's catalogue than Rock, Cena or Batista. Maybe he can be in Suburban Commando 2 or Mr Nanny 2.
Actually only watched the original Road House for the first time last year or the year before. But will likely watch this version as well at some point.
Thing about wrestlers, especially those whose personas are already quite distinct, is that they're already actors before they pivot to Hollywood. So making the jump, especially to big loud blockbusters, isn't that much of a stretch really and with the right agent and focus you can do well. The Rock has basically made himself a brand in of itself at this stage (you can debate the positives and negatives of how that effects his films)
IMO, I'd note Dave Bautista as the most "successful" lately - purely in terms of acting: the other two are probably raking in more cash and coasting on a certain personality type, but Bautista has put his head down, worked his skills as an actor and picked interesting roles that sometimes push against type. You can tell he wants to challenge himself & not just take easy pay-cheques. I thought nothing of him when he became an actor, now he's someone whose presence makes me pay more attention.
Arnie might have had all the acting skill of an inanimate carbon rod, but he he had a very singular drive & focus you didn't see on-screen. He made his career happen through hard work & took his career seriously whether it was the body-building or acting. Indeed seriously enough that he could not only start a political career, but successfully became Governor of California.
I'd doubt McGregor has the discipline to finish a 100 piece jigsaw, never-mind cultivate a career in an industry that's quite political (not in the ideological sense, but the who you know, how you play the room kinda way). And based on the trailer above, I don't think he'll have many agents jumping to their phones when this comes out.
who you know, how you play the room
John Cena is actually very funny. Great actor IMO
McGregor is playing a crass, vulgar piece of shít who trashes property? Wow, I'm sure he really had to stretch himself.
Gyllenhaal clearly seems to be enjoying himself, and Doug Liman is a director I'll always pause to check out (Edge of Tomorrow legitimately one of the gret SciFi films of the 2010s, maybe even in the modern era?), but ye gods Conor McGregor looks like he'll sink this thing through sheer anti-charisma. With luck his Hollywood career will go nowhere.
Not a chance can he do it, the asshole has no charisma or character.
He has not one ounce of charisma or comedy chops, slapstick or even deadpan
The Rock and John Cena have had very successful movie careers, especially the rock. I don’t think Conor is anywhere near as disciplined as them 2 so dunno if he can do it, making movies is tough and consists of long days. But it is certainly an option for him now.
I wounder if McGregor has what it takes to be the next Arnold Schwarzenegger ?
Indeed, I'd say that took an incredible amount of prep work for him to pull off and his acting coach(es) definitely earned their money that day!
Playing?
He does a good job at playing a dickhead
Ditto. Jake Gyllenhall seemed to be treading the line of serious/fun perfectly, but the moment McGregor showed up the trailer took an absolute nosedive
No cinema release straight to Prime streaming?
Fuckin mcgregor🤮Considering the original is a cheesey classic this was always going to be a piece of trash but with that utter gimp in it, you couldn't pay me to watch it.
I fear Conor is going for an OTT Jaws, the Bond villain and failing at it
No cool Sam Elliot character
I actually like the look of it. But yes, McGregor will ruin it.
looks bloody awful
McGregor seems to have a big role as one of the villains
Conor will win Best supporting actor Oscar 2025 for this.
His delivery is like a cross between a child and those text-to-speech Voice-Overs on Social Media. Awfully jarring.
Wouldn't be too enthused about this re-make anyway.
is all his dialogue adr, is that his voice?
Conor McGregor...WTAF......think he'll be the worst thing about this by a country mile.

Oof, I was kinda on board - and then your last line put me right off 😅
