How do people feel about this one? Will it be short and sweet?

Where’s that 14 billion figure from?
But the issue is ,it is our problem. The government won’t want to be seen giving 15% pay rises, that’s just the reality of it. The article is correct they are unlikely to move much beyond it. 10% I’d imagine.
“The government is unlikely to move much beyond its offer of an 8.5 per cent pay increase for public sector workers because of concerns it would heap more pressure on private businesses by setting an unrealistic and inflationary bar for wage increases”
Not our problem lads. Really time for the Unions to hit back strongly and quickly now.
What are you talking about?
Governments progress legislation with multi year impacts all the time.
Nearly every government decision impacts a horizon beyond the current electoral cycle
according to business post today-
"Government unlikely to up 8.5% public sector pay rise offer
No date set yet for resumption of talks on proposed increase described by unions as ‘unacceptable’
The government is unlikely to move much beyond its offer of an 8.5 per cent pay increase for public sector workers because of concerns it would heap more pressure on private businesses by setting an unrealistic and inflationary bar for wage increases.
Talks between the government and the main public sector unions were suspended just over a week ago, when unions rejected an offer of 8.5 per cent pay increases over the next 2.5 years."
the reality is the government were happy to give some private workers an extra 12.8% this year alone plus 14 billion extra to social welfare recipients
many private sector workers are ear marked for a 4% rise this year
why is it so hard for government to look after its own workers who are also struggling with serious cost of living rises
many sectors like education and health are struggling to retain or recruit workers
Yeah but I think the offer was delayed itself tbh, heightening my own impatience. They let the old deal pass, that is a rarity.
I’d expect some action this week. It’s only been a week since the offer. Unions would need time to figure out their own position and then get together to discuss it.
Yeah they really need to start being a bit more proactive tbh. What’s this bolix now of waiting to be called back. Set a date they want the improved offer so they/we know where we stand. I probably wouldn’t send the ballot papers out without the improved offer but if that isn’t forthcoming then absolutely send them out. Government seems to be taking the piss out of them and us at this stage.
Unions need to get moving on plan B asap - no urgency on this is paying right into the govt's hands imo
At least send the strike ballot papers out and be ready to go
Hopefully a deal is reached before we have to start doing the Nutcracker ;-)
https://www.businesspost.ie/news/government-unlikely-to-up-8-5-public-sector-pay-rise-offer/. Headline is wrong , says then “unlikely to move much beyond offer”.
I honestly don't know at what point they will decide to do that.
Should the unions have sent out the ballet papers by now to get things moving?
Lads and Ladies, can we please just shelve this IRA / SF / murderers line of discussion for now? You can save it for when the talks are completed.
The talks are finally happening and are at a crucial stage without the thread going off down this rabbit hole.
Let's stay focused on the prize - the pay negotiations.
Maybe the bit where you did the strike through through Sinn Féin in the same way that hardline right wing fascist loyalists do. Maybe your cup of tea, not mine.
Who are these convicted murderers going into Government?
Not that I've seen.
Any word since from the unions or the government on the current state of the pay talks?
It is an entirely accurate and relevant comment, the next government was being discussed and that party including convicted murderers is likely to be a part of it.
Which part is factually incorrect?
That IRA shot public servants, or that Sinn Fein are populist and that's not good news for the whipping boys of society such as public servants ?
It’s a ridiculously childish and glib comment that has got nothing to do with what the thread is about… it adds nothing to the conversation and it’s also factually incorrect.
No, truth which you find unpalatable. You could at least own it.
Child.
LOL... Great comment.
What do you expect to be discussed? It isn’t a topic that has information daily. They are literally discussing about the pay talks mandate.
Yaaawwn
Ignoring your incorrect statement that the government do not have the authority to sign a deal past the term….
If we signed a 12 month deal and there’s an election February/March 2025. People on this thread would be up in arms that the deal expires December 31st this year and it would be the summer of 2025 before a deal is implemented as a government would need to be formed and then discussion begin. There would be at least 6 months where we are not covered by a pay deal.
A 2 year deal is the minimum that is going to be signed in my opinion.
I concur.... U speak the truth my friend.
It's a stupid analogy in response to a particularly stupid claim.
lol. . . . Just a stupid analogy. No wonder it got so many likes.
I'm sorry for those on this thread who feel that the unions should sign up to a multi year deal with a government with no mandate to govern beyond next February. The whole purpose of the multi year deal (from FF/FG) is to make it appear as if the overall increase is something worth signing up to. FF/FG despise public servants so why bother sign up to a deal beyond 2024? Better to do a deal for 2024 and wait and see if a future government is more sympathetic to nurses, doctors, teachers, etc....
Perhaps the unions should sign up to a 20 year deal so since most of you don't mind?
