How do people feel about this one? Will it be short and sweet?

Rubbish of course
The next government can choose to continue with existing pay deals etc. or rip them up if they want. There are political consequences either way but it's their choice.
Actually a change of government isn't even needed to rip up public sector pay deals, they can just do it anyway.
Maybe some here weren't yet employed in the PS during the crash? Governments can do what they want and that includes things which would be illegal for a private sector employer to do.
Is there a thread discussing the pay talks?
Sinn Fein IRA used to shoot public servants not that long ago so I wouldn't be getting your hopes up if I were you.
They are populists above all and that's not good news for the whipping boys of society such as public servants.
What do you want to know? Discuss? It’s all been said before on here. It’s at an impasse currently. The current conversation is about whether the government have a mandate to have a pay deal passed an election cycle. While the answer is obviously yes, it is still a question related to the pay talks.
They sell bonds i.e. take out loans which don't have to be paid back for 10 or 20 or sometimes 30 years.
When does your driving licence expire? The present government have no mandate whatsoever to allow you to drive beyond February 2025.
Pathetic
You’re in the wrong thread my friend, if you’re looking for a toxic environment that’s a battle of massive egos you’re in the right place. There’s around 5 trolls/wind up merchants who seem to think their opinion is warranted on every issue! You know who you are, I don’t have to name you individually. You comment on every age, the world doesn’t revolve around you. Some people want to discuss pay talks and not see petty arguments everyday, I’d assume most people on this thread get fed up logging in, I honestly don’t know where ye get the time to post so much. Boards was good 10 years ago, helpful participants who stayed on topic. Place is just consumed with negativity now, take a long hard look in the mirror
lol. . . . Just a stupid analogy. No wonder it got so many likes.
I'm sorry for those on this thread who feel that the unions should sign up to a multi year deal with a government with no mandate to govern beyond next February. The whole purpose of the multi year deal (from FF/FG) is to make it appear as if the overall increase is something worth signing up to. FF/FG despise public servants so why bother sign up to a deal beyond 2024? Better to do a deal for 2024 and wait and see if a future government is more sympathetic to nurses, doctors, teachers, etc....
Perhaps the unions should sign up to a 20 year deal so since most of you don't mind?
It's a stupid analogy in response to a particularly stupid claim.
I concur.... U speak the truth my friend.
Ignoring your incorrect statement that the government do not have the authority to sign a deal past the term….
If we signed a 12 month deal and there’s an election February/March 2025. People on this thread would be up in arms that the deal expires December 31st this year and it would be the summer of 2025 before a deal is implemented as a government would need to be formed and then discussion begin. There would be at least 6 months where we are not covered by a pay deal.
A 2 year deal is the minimum that is going to be signed in my opinion.
Yaaawwn
What do you expect to be discussed? It isn’t a topic that has information daily. They are literally discussing about the pay talks mandate.
LOL... Great comment.
Child.
No, truth which you find unpalatable. You could at least own it.
It’s a ridiculously childish and glib comment that has got nothing to do with what the thread is about… it adds nothing to the conversation and it’s also factually incorrect.
Which part is factually incorrect?
That IRA shot public servants, or that Sinn Fein are populist and that's not good news for the whipping boys of society such as public servants ?
It is an entirely accurate and relevant comment, the next government was being discussed and that party including convicted murderers is likely to be a part of it.
Any word since from the unions or the government on the current state of the pay talks?
Not that I've seen.
Who are these convicted murderers going into Government?
Maybe the bit where you did the strike through through Sinn Féin in the same way that hardline right wing fascist loyalists do. Maybe your cup of tea, not mine.
Lads and Ladies, can we please just shelve this IRA / SF / murderers line of discussion for now? You can save it for when the talks are completed.
The talks are finally happening and are at a crucial stage without the thread going off down this rabbit hole.
Let's stay focused on the prize - the pay negotiations.
Should the unions have sent out the ballet papers by now to get things moving?
I honestly don't know at what point they will decide to do that.
https://www.businesspost.ie/news/government-unlikely-to-up-8-5-public-sector-pay-rise-offer/. Headline is wrong , says then “unlikely to move much beyond offer”.
Hopefully a deal is reached before we have to start doing the Nutcracker ;-)
Unions need to get moving on plan B asap - no urgency on this is paying right into the govt's hands imo
At least send the strike ballot papers out and be ready to go
