my curiosity is more about the Point itself and why do they setup like they do regarding standing and seated configuration sometimes?

I wanted to go myself but I'd be the sort to only ever want Standing and when the tix went on sale originally the Standing seemed gone instantly, hmm.

later on chatting to someone about it who claimed to know sez that the area given over for standing apparently was configured very very small for this gig

I'm a bit surprised at this as they are a stadium band, kinda doesn't fit their style, really I would have thought most going would want standing

now I'm hearing ads all over the radio pushing the gig, clearly its undersold....and indeed when u go on Ticketbsd you can see tons of seated tix available

**entirely different matter maybe and I like SM and would love to see them but also taking into account here that the pricing seems WAY too expensive, not surprised its not a sellout like..**

but back to the main question: is the Standing vs Seating configuration in the Point deliberate for some reason I can't really understand or is it a potential fupp up on part of whomever decides these things (band, agents, The Point....?)

Seating configuration is decided between promoter and agent. Between them they agree the set up and thus number of tickets available and the different pricing of tickets.

the seating configuration for 3 arena can be broadly changed downstairs from either a) fully standing b) no standing at all or c) small standing area and seats.

artists themselves through the agent stipulate the kind of set up they want. If they want an all seated show then promoter will arrange.

the type of music and demographics of the audience are key into decision of set up.

would hazard a guess that for simple minds whose main audience is probably in their 50’s that they decided that a set up that was nearly all seats would suit their audience best.

to note simple minds Belfast show had no standing tickets whatsoever.

As for ticket prices they seem to range from €50 to €90 or so for seats.

for an arena show this isn’t totally unusual

I'd imagine their VIP pricing (€120+ to €360+) for quite a swathe of seats is a big factor with the unsold seats. Probably some fans holding out to see what happens with them.

Age demographic is obviously a factor. Someone rocking out to them in Croke Park in 1986 mightn't be so nimble in 2024 😎

The Point, Lansdowne Road and The Olympia are perfectly cromulent names for venues for those of us that reject the commercialisation of venue nomenclature.

One absolutely classic gig, around a decade ago, was SM in Olympia for the 5x5 tour which focused on the early albums; the Point in 2024 at these prices, nein danke - sit at home and watch the classic stuff on YouTube for 40 years ago

the Minds at Croker in '86..I'd just finished the Leaving Cert and was me first ever proper gig as it happens...I'll never forget it and the energy and I reckon it set me up for a lifetime of gig and interest in live music. passed it on to my kid too, we goto gigs and festivals when we can like some travel over for football matches, we're deep in the hundreds now

and yeah the pricing is pants. I don't know anyone with that kind of disposable income.

Quick look on ticketmaster and Belfast show is doing very well, looks like somewhere around 7000 tickets sold or so.

they did 3 arena in 2022 so probably slightly too soon for a return to the 3 arena

Simple Minds Rockpalast Cologne from 1982 on YouTube, 90 mins at their peak, also various Dortmund gigs.

The German networks took this seriously back then and did proper recording jobs

ah! the lightening was pretty special alright, if I recall there were plenty around me wondering if it was some new kinda pyrotechnic trick...nowadays there'd have been some americanized Govt yellow alert podium session on the telly and due to Heath & Safety something something we'd have been shut down lol

I can remember bits of the Waterboys and some Lloyd Cole. had a couple in me early on but wasn't hammered for Simple Minds which was a great (accidental) call on my part ;)

its all a bit weird, if u go on Ticketbsrd there's shedloads of expensive seated tickets some are eyewatering, not resale either straight original prices (maybe I'm wrong but I can't see them selling)

I'd have no interest in seated anyway (exactly per what you said, I HAATE THAT) so I'll just keep an eye out

They will just curtain off the back half of the 3 arena, upgrade people tickets to closer to the front.

they have just done that for the smile aka Radiohead side project in the 3 arena.

At most mcd might give radio stations/media outlets and journalists/friends of friends tons of tickets for giveaways and competitions.

i see €52 is cheapest price for simple minds. They aren’t going to discount that. They might change more tickets to that price in the days leading up.

There was a mass giveaway for Duran Duran last year at €5 per ticket but I guess that isn't the norm.

They also gave away a load of freebies for the second night of Arcade Fire last time they played here. I nabbed a couple of standing tickets thanks to an eagle eyed boardsie alerting us here

Yeah, they might paper freebies off.

publicly announced discounts like Duran Duran or student discounts rates they did for kanye/Jay z are extremely rare as it makes the artist and promoter look bad. They prefer to quietly give away tickets in that situation.

I wonder is that is also why they don't do a seat dot map for the Point? (visually you would see the swathes of empty seats)

all those 50 quid tickets are right at the back in the gods...and in that shed you would be much better off staying outside and listening in over a pair of tin cans and string lol

Seat selection is never open for 3 arena shows. national stadium and liberty hall only ones than come to mind with seat selection on for some shows

Simple Minds filled 3 Arena in 2022 and no doubt if they reduce the silly priced tickets, will again .

Don't see them in the same category as Duran Duran , but mind you some of the concertgoers had tickets from, was it 2020 gig? that was cancelled due to Covid.
