That last sentence completely fails to address how badly we fell behind the rising cost of living over the last deal. A loss of at least 6.5% which needs to be addressed up front in any new deal.
I worked for one of the "pillar" banks as a college graduate. There were 7 people in my section. Two of them did the bare minimum and just stayed under the radar, two of them took on every task with vigour (I was one of those due to naivety), the other three seemed to compete with eachother for being of any use; extra long lunch breaks, maximizing sick leave, ignoring tasks, deliberately misinterpreting tasks, making a balls of tasks to ensure they weren't asked again.
I now realise that the problem wasn't the employee - it was the structures. People's stages of life, personal ambitions were not considered. Those chasing promotion - and there were plenty of them- never tackled structural issues. They focussed on glamorous easy wins.
Human nature is human nature. The workplace being public or private is less a factor.

If there was an office like that in the private sector where 2 would do instead of 10, that office would not stay long in business : their competitors would put them out of the business and the 10 would be out of work, and probably with no pension either.

Interesting that in 2024 those on Jobseekers Allowance receive a 5.04% increase (from €220 to €232) from FF/FG whereas public servants working in schools, hospitals, and elsewhere are to receive a 1.75% increase in wage in 2024. Sitting at home watching daytime TV and contributing nothing to society is valued nearly three times more than the work of public servants by FF/FG.
Agree with the other poster and the cliff taylor piece that a meet in the middle 10% is likely here and hopefully the extra 1.5% is frontloaded this year e.g. 3% in March 24, 2% in Oct 24 at least
So why peddle worthless anecdoes then?
If the union can't get a decent deal over the line in an, likely, election year or just before an election year then I dread to think how bad the next deal will be when we're potentially three years off an election.
DId you miss the part that they were waiting for years for the HSE to upgrade the salary system? There's no point saying X staff can do the work with system Y if system Y is not available.

As you well know if inputs are not made in time on a payroll system then they will miss the pay run. It's not the workers' fault if there are peaks and troughs in their workload. Yet more irrelevancies. The subject of this thread is the public sector pay talks. Not pensions, knitting or any of the other nonsense.

Your post is a bit over dramatic and your last sentence is simply not true. Jobseekers would be valued 3 times more if public servants were getting 78€.
It is tiring to see people playing with numbers to suit their agenda. Maybe you would have preferred a 12€ increase like jobseekers to feel equal.
Don’t get me wrong, I hate jobseekers who play the system. They shouldn’t have a more confortable life than people on minimum wage.
I have worked in industry for many years, holding senior positions in MNEs. My current role in the public sector is at least as challenging than all of my previous roles. You don’t have a clue what you’re talking about.
Is it challenging because of, for example Norries comments about, where you can not get change from the 10 ladies to run to a system which 2 could operate?
All of us have family and good friends in both sectors, we all know the situation, as I said you can get slackers in both systems, no need to be so defensive as if I hit a nerve? But at least we can agree if the 10 ladies above were in the private sector, it would not be long before their business was put out of business by a competitor?
That doesn't even account for the people on supplemtary , training programs and work programs who are unemployed but not on the live register

It's a simple fact that public servants are being offered a 1.75% increase (yet another real terms pay cut) as FF/FG look after those on Jobseekers Allowance giving them an increase nearly three times (2.88) greater.
You can spin it any way you like but you cannot escape that fact.
It's a very fair offer from the Government, particularly the 12% aimed towards the lower paid. It's been hinted on this thread here and there at how surprisingly generous the offer actually came too. Let's hope they remain firm and face down any further union demands. There couldn't be much more to give away, maybe shortening it to two years. After that, the unions should be told to lump it. It looks like the Government already made one improved offer from 7.5% to 8.5%
A quick look at the Forsa salary scale and each increment is worth in and around €1500 which gives someone on €48000 a 3pct rise for the year. Same for nursing and garda salaries. Add in the 3.5% leaves that worker 6.5% better off at the end of the year than the start of it.
Compare to an average of 3.5% to 4% in the private sector, it is very fair in the round. It's telling how the posters on here do not compare to the private sector when making comparisons, they have to compare those on the dole. If the private sector forecasted increases was much higher than the government's offer, they'd be quick in drawing comparisons.

Public servants are getting a paltry 1.75% increase in pay in 2024.
Note that many inactive adults on welfare are not on JSA, but on some other payment like DA, etc.
The JSA figures don't show the full levels of inactivity.
Of the three people I know on DA, none are disabled in the sense that the general public would accept.
All three could do some work in society. None do.
I don't get any increment.
