Is the fact that bikes arent supposed to be brought onto trains at peak times ever enforced, every evening i see people forcing themselves onto the dart with a bike in Pearse at 6pm.
The norm in other countries is you have a bike at the other end and do not take a bike on the commuter train - it is impossible to accommodate them.
Some serious effort would need to be put in to dealing with bike theft here though before that would be an appealing idea to many; as well as significantly better storage options at stations.
Even folding bikes come in so many shapes and sizes. Some fold neatly. Some are like an octopus in a string bag. Same with scooters. Its also hard to organise it so bikes aren't double parked if one is getting off before the other. If you are going to the terminus that's not an issue
Do you know if those "bike rooms" are on all Dublin to Cork or is it hit and miss with some using the in carriage racks ?
Gonna be using it over the weekend and wondering what to look out for.
As posted above - the bike/luggage van is on the trains operated by Mark 4 sets with a locomotive, which are the majority of the trains on the Dublin/Cork route.
The services operated by ICRs only have the small number of racks.
Thanks. Good to know I will most likely have the "van" set up as I much prefer it to the racks.
As LX mentioned, it's just the MK4 on the Cork route. This one below.
I gathered that from the original post. What I was asking was how many of the Dublin to Cork trains are MK4 which it seems is most of them.
Had a closer look today. Can't see anywhere that you could lock a bike to the door on an ICR. Possibly to the handrail, as I mentioned, but that's about it.
Picture of the third bike space also included.
Heard a guy with a bike in the vestibule today, arguing with a driver who was asking him to put it in the carriage with the bike rack.
This...
Ah I missed that post earlier!
Who needs to bring a bike on the dart when you can block up the steps at platform 5 instead.
What that needs is a lock that unlocks by remote so the rider can just run off the train slide down the railing and be on his way.
What it needs is add a new lock to it and see do they like being inconvenienced.
I asked the station manager about, and he said it was going to be cut off. But it was already there from yesterday. Can’t understand a glaring safety issue left there that long.
Re: enforcement, I saw an Irish Rail staff member shout at two chaps with non-folding bikes on an absolutely packed commuter train in Connolly. He was helping two wheelchair users onboard and the bikes were in the disabled spot. It took a few roars before they took their bikes and got off.
Good. Like to see it enforced. Ruins it for the rest of us.
There isn't a dedicated bike space on the dart.
They are supposed to be folded.
