You obviously missed my post awhile back, where I stated that I unreservedly condemned anyone at any time or place who killed or hurt in any way, innocent men, women and children. And I have not changed my opinion. As for the tunnels, I believe that the best way to "eliminate" Hamas is in the tunnels, because they themselves have said the protection of the tunnels was only for Hamas and not for ordinary Palestinian's. The downside is of course that these tunnels run underneath practically all of Gaza, and of course require very powerful penetrative bombs to achieve their aims, which unfortunately means the death's / injuries of many Palestinians.

You take it wrongly so. Who will stop what is now a terrorist state - Israel.

So Israel are meant to just sit back and do nothing as they are attacked from pretty much all sides? Again with Israel being held to completely different standards to any other country.

Back at that time, there were lots of "Tunnel Vision" as they say!! And since the capture / surrender of many Palestinians both Hamas and civilians, inc. medical staff it has emerged that Hamas did indeed use the tunnel underneath the hospital, but that all medical staff were forced to deny it during TV interviews. Hamas then did a major clean up job when it was clear that the IDF would soon take control of the Hospital and the tunnels underneath. Yes, flooding the tunnels has started awhile back, but it's estimated that the job to completely flood them all will take several months. Have hostages being killed in the tunnels because of flooding? I'm not too sure at this point, because Hamas would have plenty of escape points built in. But with the bombings? Yes, I'd say that many have been killed in the tunnels by the bombs, Hamas and Hostages alike. Whatever warning they would have with the flooding, there would be no such warnings with the bombs....one minute you are sitting in the tunnel and split seconds later, the whole tunnel collapses around you.

It’s not whataboutery but the highlighting of hypocrisy. Only one conflict matters.

To be fair Israel is in a completely different position to any other country.

They uniquely represent a people that was practically forced into extinction (in an abhorrent, open ,calculating and recent way that made monsters of all who did not combat it directly)

I cannot see that they will allow next nor near any repeat of those events without dragging down a multitude of enemies

If their neighbours cannot see that then I pity them (and us too most likely)

The quote goes "Do not go gentle into that good night"

If Israel had responded with a one week blitzkrieg against Hamas targets in Gaza, people could have argued that was a proportionate response. We're now up to a three month relentless assault on the civilians of Gaza, with the regime suggesting we could see another three to six months of this ongoing horror show.

To give some perspective, the invasion of Iraq in 2003 (which shredded Tony Blair's career) lasted five weeks and resulted in about 5k civilian deaths.

The point was, countries all around them are threatening Israel and many openly state the country shouldn't even exist. Some are already launching rockets at them. But according to that poster, Israel saying they will retaliate if they are attacked is "terrorist" behaviour and they need to be stopped. What about the ones attacking them being stopped? Nothing about that. What other country is expected to sit there while they are attacked by other governments who want them annihilated and do nothing?

That's rubbish. Do you believe that Israel has killed nearly 22,000 Hamas? Have they even killed 1,000? What we do know is that they have murdered --

    • Dead: At least 21,110, including at least:
      • 8,200 children
      • 6,200 women
    • Injured: More than 55,243, including at least:
      • 8,663 children
      • 6,327 women
    • Missing: More than 7,000

Gosh that would have shown them.

Hamas wouldn't have known what hit them.

Yeah, spending months killing now tens of thousands of civilians that Hamas don't care about either is clearly the logical option.

The Hamas attack is what we're discussing as per the thread title surely.

As to what will come out of all of this, (aside from the arms manufacturers making even more money as you said) I think that there will be an increase worldwide of attacks on Jews. And that's on a personal level, as they say. Worst case scenario, it will mean a broader full-scale war, with other Countries dragged in.

    Ah, sorry. Wasn't sure.

I'd say only the US can stop them in their tracks (non militarily) by withdrawing funding and political support. It's possible but currently seems unlikely.

If there was a concerted attack from multiple belligerent actors, both internal and external, perhaps that would stop them - but again, I don't see that happening. If it did, I'd say the Middle East will be in flames.

If this campaign goes on and on, perhaps moderate Israelis might have enough of a voice? Especially the families of hostages.

Can't recall when elections are due but that might have an impact.

What is certain is that the overwhelming worldwide population is against this method of attack. How that becomes a concrete impact on Israel, I'm not sure. If it starts to bite in terms of economy, perhaps Israel will think twice?

But I do think only direct US intervention will "stop them in their tracks" (or a unanimous UNSC vote for a ceasefire).

All speculation on my part anyhow...

That doesn't answer the question, how much oppression would you suffer before fighting back?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,508 ✭✭✭dmcdona

IDF reported (today) 8000 Hamas killed.

I don't know if that number forms part of the circa 30K dead/presumed dead.

Also, who knows what IDF considers "Hamas" - given they even rounded up a person in a wheelchair today.

Any more places (other than the three you've quoted) to indicate a "worldwide" spread?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,895 ✭✭✭Wolf359f

I don't think that 8k would be part of the figures Gaza (Hamas) announces.

Of course, the sentiment of that poem could equally apply to Israel's neighbours.

I doubt Israel's neighbours could care less about anyone's pity.

But Israel absolutely has the right to exist. So does its neighbours. Including those in Gaza and the West Bank/East Jerusalem.

"But according to that poster, Israel saying they will retaliate if they are attacked is "terrorist" behaviour and they need to be stopped."

    Who said that?

If there is any attack on Jews (or any Israeli) that would be abhorrent and unacceptable.

Robust (and respectful) debate is fair enough.

I do sometimes despair that this is such an intractable situation, a solution cannot be found. And all the while innocents on all sides are caught in the horror of it all.

I do wish that they could know the peace we enjoy.

"I doubt Israel's neighbours could care less about anyone's pity."

    A strange breed if true.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,045 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Moderate Israelis are a very small minority unfortunately. A huge majority support the IDF's bombing of Gaza (the regime's propaganda machine is not reporting Gazan civilian deaths to them, but they clearly couldn't give a toss about this aspect in any event).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,508 ✭✭✭dmcdona

Hamas-run health ministry reported deaths do not include anyone "not brought to hospital".

No idea how many that would be but that would include those buried under the rubble, unrecoverable or blown to smithereens.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,508 ✭✭✭dmcdona

    Why do you say that?

The Israeli war cabinet (demonstrably) couldn't care less what others think of them or their actions.

Does that make Israel a strange breed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,045 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

With regards to Israeli public knowledge of what is really going on in Gaza, I saw this interesting comment from an (Israeli) reader of Haaretz under one of their articles:

"The point is, although I haven't seen surveys that show exactly how many people know (*about the large numbers of Gazan civilians who are dying), but if I had to guess, I would say that the absolute majority is exposed to it. The problem is that when you show such things, the reaction is usually, either they deserve it or you just have to kill them all and save the mess. The vast majority of Israelis either do not care about the Gazans or they think that they are all guilty and deserve to die. This is the new Israel and whether you like it or not, you have to face reality."

We're into the scenario of Israel doing what it is doing in Gaza, but with the full knowledge or even strong approval of its own public. This is ominous, as it suggests Netanyahu's plan to destroy Gaza and / or ethnically cleanse the place may well come to pass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,895 ✭✭✭Wolf359f

The Israeli public know about the death toll in Gaza and the West Bank. This isn't Nazi Germany, North Korea, China or Russia. They still have free access to international news. I suspect they hate the Palestinians as much as the Palestinians hate Israeli's. Hating someone doesn't excuse what's going on and certainly not a defense for war crimes Even polls have said the Israeli public don't think the IDF is hitting Gaza hard enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 828 ✭✭✭Hey boy

Depends on the level of oppression etc. Many of the videos etc of Gaza posted by Gazans themselves showed a happy scene completely at odds with the narrative of an open air prison.

Besides perhaps you meant oppression by Hamas? If you don’t mean this then perhaps you should consider it as a factor. Consider the vast sums wasted on tunnels alone. Surely, even for you, this constitutes “oppression “?

In any event I don’t think I can conceive of a scenario where “fighting back” means deliberately killing kids and burning people in their homes after tying them together etc.
