Windows 10 Onedrive

So I uninstalled Onedrive over 3 years ago when I first installed Windows 10 on this PC and today I saw all my desktop icons had little green ticks on them. I went online to see what that meant, because I've never seen it before and found out that it meant that Onedrive had "backed up" my desktop. Fuck knows where too, because I've never used Onedrive ever.

How do I stop this crap happening again, because I don't want that nonsense.

Perhaps your Win install have been upgraded to latest and ALL M$ crap reinstalled

I guess you signed into PC with your M$ account rather local user, thus automatically signing you into all MS apps

you can see what account it is syncing from OD settings, same place where you disable sync.

You can disable OD from runing on startup in Task Manager, however, M$ does not care about your preferences - on next upgrade they will switch all back ON

Onedrive isn't part of my startup processes, and I see from Apps and Features in Settings that Onedrive isn't installed.

I went onto the web and signed into Microsoft Onedrive through Firefox and saw that there weren't any files up there.

It's all very peculiar.

Haven't used Google Drive since it was called Google Docs. But I had a look up there, too, and there was nothing.

Can't post a pic, cos there's no ticks on my desktop icons now. When you refresh the screen, they go away.

On your computer, are you signed with local account or M$ account (mail address) ? Do you have office apps installed, legit install?

Anything useful/readable in C:\Users\%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive\logs ?

Similar logs would be for any other cloud storage solution.

Some files might not be readable with simple tools like notepad, but date/time might give you some indication

A solid green tick indicates the file is on your machine. If it's deleted in the cloud (or don't have internet) it will be on your machine.

If you had one drive installed. To stop it syncing the desktop you'd go into the cloud icon on your task bar, (right click) enter settings and uncheck desktop.

Syncing the desktop is a default in OneDrive. But you can turn if off.

If course it might have nothing to do with One Drive but a visual option you've turned on, select files by checkbox or such.

Did you open the new "Windows Backup" app by any chance? In reality it's a "move your user folder to OneDrive" app.

I never really have to sign in. The PC just starts with me as admin. There's no password or anything like that. No office apps. I use Open Office for Excel and the like.

I had a look in the folder you mentioned, but there's nothing in there.

I guess I'm going to chalk it up to one of those Windows 10 oddities. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It could be installed and not be present in Apps and Features. Might be worth checking Control Panel - Programs and Features - Uninstall a program.

Do the ticks appear every time or was it a once-off occurence or does it happen often?

That's what I think. Perhaps re-install it, un-sync the desktop then uninstall it.

As much as I dislike onedrive. We are going to have know how to deal with it, going forward. I don't think its all bad either.

Already checked Programs and Features and it's not up there.

The ticks appeared once. I've never seen the PC do that before in the 3 and half years I've been using Windows 10.
