Have just signed on to Jobseekers Benefit. What other extras can I get?

Recently unemployed and I want to get as much of my money back as possible having paid an eye watering amount of tax over the last five years.

So, I have been awarded Job Seekers Benefit at 220 euro a week. Starting from next week and back-dated to 15th November.

Do I get the Christmas bonus?

What else can I get? Can I get coal / fuel allowance or whatever it's called?

Free shoes allowance for a friend's wedding or Christening or whatever. (that might be an urban legend but heard it's a thing)

Etc. etc.

You can apply for tax back, as you were being taxed on the basis that you would work 12 months of the year.

You would need to qualify for the Exceptional needs payment which would cover the cost of the new shoes but this is means tested

You forgot to mention that if you are a native of Nigeria and you can’t manage to fold up the double buggy to get it onto the bus, that you can just leave it at the bus stop and SW will give you the money for a new one.

The ukranians get a new phone and phone credit you should qualiy if you dont already have a phone but have to remember out prsi payments will be higher from jan1st on to pay for your freebees

When you hear these things being suggested in the media you should realise that if it’s ever going to happen that it will be at least 2 full budgets away.

So possibly Jan 2026.

It's been mooted on other occasions in the past but was shot down by the “left” before it ever got past a discussion stage.

You get nothing extra, being a Benefit payment your getting a little back from your contributions.

You’ll get a €12 a week increase from 1st January. If your a single person with no kids, disabilities or illnesses, and no caring responsibilities that’s your lot untill you’ve been on jobseekers for 12 months then you may be entitled to fuel allowance, depending on who you live with.

There is no allowance for party shoes 😂

There’s a back to school clothing and footwear allowance for school age children, that’s the closest there is to free shoes.

You should apply for a medical card though.

If you have an emergency need you can apply for a means tested payment to help meet it.

Unfortunately most of the additional benefits are not payable to folks like you, who contributed to the system and lost their jobs. To get most payments (eg christmas bonus) you have to be on long term, not contribution based payments, like JSA.
